  • Harvesting and Sawing Lumber on a Small Scale Sawmill with Greg Pennington
    One of the major motivating factors in moving to Tennessee was the "built in" community I already had here. One of the main pillars of that community is my good friend Greg Pennington. A few weeks ago, Greg and I were able to take part in an urban lumber salvage project for some truly massive oak trees where the city was clearing for a waterway. We cut the trees to length with chainsaws then brought the trees back to Greg's to saw them into lumber on his Timber King lumber mill for future use. Greg showed me his lumber storage and how to stack and sticker wood to dry it. Take a tour of Greg Pennington's windsor chair shop, tour his sawmill tour and check out his lumber storage as we share some plans and project ideas for the future. If you're interested in learning where your lumber comes from, how to turn logs into lumber, how to mill your own wood, how lumber is dried, and what the heck we are gonna do with all this wood, this is a great place to start.

    We had a vacation cabin near Lake Arrowhead for years. It was on Burnt Mill road. It was built in the 1920s. Evidently it was built by someone that worked at the mill, before it burned! The cabin was made from the first cut of the tree (with the bark still on). The timbers stood vertical with the barkside out. The flat side was the inside of the cabin and was finished with ceder shingles.
    Thanks for the memories!

    Hey Anne, great videos & amazing work! You're probably gonna luv living in TN but these people are wonderfully different & much kinder than us outsiders (although you clearly have a very kind heart). I've been in the south since '83 (I'm a northern boy) & I see a lot of differences among these selfless people. These people are easy to love & they are truly very accepting & super helpful. If I may, I noticed at the end of the video Greg said something like we're gonna like having you around here & you softly replied, we'll see about that. These people want to accept you, believe in you & like you just as you are. You don't have to prove yourself, be everyones buddy or question their motives, intents or words. As a 55 year old, I've lived all over the world, born & raised in MA but wouldn't trade TN or her people for the world. Learn to accept them for who they are & enjoy your new life! Worst case scenario, if you decide TN isn't for you, you can always pack up the truck & go elsewhere. But I hope you learn to love & listen to these hospitable & kindhearted people because they are the salt of the earth & very earthy... Enjoy your new life & thanks for listening to my banter. Hope you have 5 minutes to check out my latest house remodel & 1st house flip. Thanks for your amazingly exceptional videos! You're awesome!!!

    Oh thank you so much for sharing this! My daddy was a master woodworker and he is no longer here with us. One of the things I miss the most is the precious smell of sawdust in his shop😢. Running my hands through that sawdust and feeling the different types of wood. Hearing him explain with pride all the characteristics of that beautiful lumber. Oh and the tools from a lifetime of creating. Your video brought a tear and a smile. Thank you so much and God bless y’all❤️❤️

    One question that I have for all the amazing woodworkers on youtube.
    Do you plant a tree back ?
    Considering your lives revolve around deforestation, how do you contribute or do you contribute to restoring the environment that you utilise ?

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 года назад +2

      It should be noted that Greg, like most other sawyers I’ve met, is using trees that are either cut for proper forest management or come down naturally in storms. So wood that we are using has nothing whatsoever to do with deforestation. Proper forest management is crucial, however. I have planted a whoooooooole lot more trees than wood I could ever use in many lifetimes, and will continue to do so. I’d like my grandkids to be able to do woodwork as well.

      Greg doesn't deal with many burls, we are always looking for the straightest grained trees possible for chair making.

    Just so you know you don't have to let fresh sawed wood sit and dry that long. My neighbor and I have built alot of wood footlocker trunks out of ceder and pine that was fresh cut and sawed. Just wanted to say!

      For furniture, you definitely do ;) for outside, and rougher projects, it’s much less dangerous to risk it and use freshly cut wood. Heck, most of the big box store 2x4’s are barely dry at this point.

      @@AnneofAllTrades The crazy thing all lumber sold in big box store are kiln-dried to 4% moister but treated wood after drying is put into vacuum chambers to soak up the weather treatment solution. I get what your saying I do.

    You know, in retrospect, I hesitate to criticize anyone's postings, seeing that we are all dealing with this new thing. Sorry.

      I’d say it’s a very reasonable thing to be concerned about. This video was filmed in January. It take a very long time to film, edit, and produce these videos, and we thankfully had quite a backlog before this all started. We have been in total isolation for two weeks now. Social distancing is extremely important, and is the least selfish thing any of us can do right now.

      Thank you. I am doing the same.

    So, since it's March 28, do you think you should be exhibiting social distancing, even if you don't yet need it? Just stand apart.
