Today I review the WEN products WEN56380i 3800W generator. This is a compact workhorse with a lot of great features including push-button electric start, fuel level and power output LED displays, and volts/Hz/Hour-meter via digital display.
This is the 'un-cut' or 'long' version which has lots of detail you might not need/want. If you want to see much less detail, please watch the 'short' version:

This was the final push I needed to buy a generator, thanks for the very detailed video.
Your Welcome! Let us know how it works out.
I did the same thing the first time I went to start the generator.....had the orange button pushed in and it startled the crap out of me. ~lol!!! Great review!
Hey Dan, thanks for letting me know I'm not alone!
Just passed 500 hours on mine and no issues. Adding the high altitude kit made it start easier, run smoother, and use less fuel. I'm at 4000'.
Hey, thanks for the input here! Glad to know you have such good experience with it. Mine needs some work on the carb. It isn't handling large step-loads well at the moment, but that is likely just a jet clogged...
Great review, and thanks for taking the panels off. Just ordered this generator, prior to watching your video. Would have clicked on the links if I hadn't already ordered the generator and dipstick. I am replacing a 7 year old Champion 3100 inverter that finally gave up, to run our off grid cabin. No complaints on the Champion, it ran for (my guess) several thousand hours. What sold me on this Wen is when I saw the drain tube for changing the oil. Tilting the generator to drain the oil is a complete pain.
I will be watching for the sound proof box build, and any other videos you post.
Thanks again for a great, informative video!
Hey thanks for the feedback. Next videos will be the sound measurements and comparison and one on the propane conversion. Sound isolation is ongoing as well.
Ordered last night for $642 from Amazon. Woke up this morning looked at Amazon and it is 22% cheaper at $500. I canceled the $642 order and reordered for $500
Wow, $500 is a great price, and what a difference! Glad you checked. I haven't seen that sort of price swing myself...
@@DansWay Called Amazon to confirm bc it’s no longer posted and was told it’s a 3rd party promotion that has sold out. Also bought the 4 yr insurance warranty.
Thanks Dan. I'm about to order the WEN 3800 and I decided to browse around RUclips one last time just in case I might have missed something and that's how I found your channel. I'm really glad I did you just reinforced my reasoning to purchase the WEN 3800.. I'll be sure to subscribe and click the like button.
I'll also click on the affiliate links for the WEN 3800 and Dip-stick. Hopefully they will send you a few bucks. Again I really enjoyed your review. I look forward to checking out the rest of your videos.
Thanks so much for your comments Fred. I really appreciate your support. Let us know your thoughts on the generator when you get it. Watch B your back! Any chance you would add a propane conversion it to it? I’m playing with one now and am considering doing a video on it.
@@DansWay Probably not. I live in Houston so I'm getting ready for hurricane season. With the way it's being going it may be a nasty season. Still I'm not apposed to the idea so I would really to see a video on it. Good luck with it.
Thanks for showing me how much gas is left over in the carburetor I was wondering about that thanks a lot😊
Thanks for watching! Are you going to pick one of these up?
I bought this same model on Facebook marketplace for 300.00 and I had to redo a oil switch wire readjust the valves and install a new spark plug install a new carburetor now my generator runs like a top
Fantastic buy! I'd love to get one of these for $300...
Excellent detailed information.
Thanks for the compliment! What generator are you getting or have already?
I just purchased the Predator 3500 but mine, has the same engine as the WEN 56380i, RATO212. I believe this is a Yamaha clone. Most reviews I see are for the 3500 with the Predator (Honda Clone). Thanks for an intelligent, detailed review.
I have watched HOURS of inverter generator videos. I’m thankful I ran across yours! I’m a senior female and need help. I have a tiny camper that has a double mattress plus about 3 feet of storage area. It has a Fridgidaire 5000 btu,115 volt air conditioner. Will the WEN 2350i inverter run the AC and a one cup coffee marker at the same time? Thank you so much.
Hey there, so the answer is a definite 'maybe'... The air conditioner should draw roughly 500W, but I don't know what the power rating of the particular coffee maker you have is. If you can take a look at the power information written on the bottom of the coffee maker that would be the next step. If the coffee maker is less than 1500W, then this setup will likely work fine. Worst case, you could shut off the air while you make the coffee...
Any idea what size thumbscrews could we buy to replace the regular ones?
Good job Dan. Sure like your content. I'm still shopping but now narrowed it down to 2 of the WEN models. A big one, and a small one and for the price maybe even both☺
Yah, honestly, 'both' is where I landed!
Can you explain about the grounding requirements. My use for this generator will be for extension cords powering Lights for a field. Thanks
Excellent review video, thank you.
Thank you! Are you going to buy one?
Yes, I bought it today. This review that you did sold me.
Awesome video! Were you able to convert to natural gas? If so, do you have a video. Thanks!
Hey Dan, I'm really interested in seeing your soud proofing box!
I think I should get the magnetic dipstick
You can't go wrong with it. I love how substantial it feels vs. the plastic one that comes with the generator...
Hi Dan,
What is the chance of you posting the Natural Gas/Propane conversion for 56380i? My 56380i just arrived not 30 minutes ago and my NG/P conversion arrives tomorrow.
It would be great to see how you did it before I attempt it.
Thanks,
Bill
PS. I just found your page last night and I am already a subscriber.
Ok, since you asked... Here is a unreleased video clip showing my progress so far: ruclips.net/video/KdJDjtVr6Sg/видео.html
I would be interested in what LP conversion kit you are using for this 56380i?
@@rjbass338 I got a setup from Nash Fuel. They show this out of stock, but this is the idea: ebay.us/RaA2uF
Wonderful video! Thank you for all the info! I just ordered one. Is it true that the hour meter is only for current runtime and not total time?
It is for total runtime not just for current runtime.
@@DansWay excellent. There were some reports of that not being the case.
I want to tag a question off your efficiency video... How low can the output go in watts before you stop saving any fuel? I know manufacturers use the 25% load metric, but is it lower?
Good point. So you are asking at what point does the output load make _any_ difference in the fuel consumed to idle the generator right? I could do some tests to look into that. Ultimately a 25/50W load for example would be a practical minimum load (charging a phone or laptop for example).
@@DansWay Hi. I was more concerned with 10% - 25%. I'm unlikely to use a generator to (only) charge a phone, but since I need to buy a 4000 watt class generator for spikes (hair dryers, sump pumps, etc) however I really need less than 1000 watt normally.
I cannot find that info anywhere so it would be good to know how well these inverter generators do below that 25% mark!
@@rob21 good point. For the larger generators (4000-10K) I would assume that below 1000W they are basically idling, so your efficiency there will be really poor... If I get my hands on a large unit I could run this test as well. Let me know if you try it yourself sometime.
The auto off only burns what's in the bowl to the very bottom of the emulsion tube thats it
Agreed, but isn't that all but just a few drops? After running the system till it stopped, I opened the drain and only a few drops came out, so much better than allowing a whole bowl of fuel to evaporate into residue for sure.
@@DansWay yes I agree
Hello Dan you mention that you had a video on this 3800 Wen gen to convert to LP gas , can you direct me to that I bought this genset but wanted to have both LP and gas ..thank you
Ok, since you asked... Here is a unreleased video clip showing my progress so far: ruclips.net/video/KdJDjtVr6Sg/видео.html. This is using the following kit: ebay.us/YfHxOj
I purchased one a month ago from Amazon. I cannot get the election start to work. Turns over but won’t start. When I pull the manual start it always starts on the first pull. I’ve let it run for 45 minutes, turned it off and the same thing happens when I try to start again. I have contacted Wen and they gave me a Ticket number but no one has called me back. Any clues?
Wow, that is really strange! I have far better experience using the electric start. With the control rotated to 'run' or 'choke' it should fire right up with one touch. Is the battery turning the motor over rapidly like it sounds in my video?
I would just call them and ask for support. I have called support and got a person almost right away and he was able to answer my questions. I have not returned a unit before, so I'm not sure what that process looks like myself. Perhaps they could ship out a new control board or have you take it to a service center who would do the work.
Did you get support and figure out why it isn't working right?
So the parallel test never happened?
I haven't been able to get a second generator to parallel them together. Are you suggesting the idea of pairing the two different generators? I had thought of that as well, but haven't had a reason to use more than the 3800W generator can put out.
@@DansWay I just would like to see how well it works out. I have this generator for my RV and just in case reasons for the house. But I have a 2,600sq house and have yet to fully hook it up to house, to see how much it can handle. So if adding the smaller wen on top this pushes it to where I won't suffer loosing items in the house then great. I just came across your video today and saw it was a few months old and the tab for the parallel didn't pop up lol so I thought I'd ask
@@Nuck82 Hey great, thanks for watching. You should have no problem powering aspects of your home with this. Your AC and electric stove/hot-water might not work as those are typically 230V dual-phase devices. You can get a transfer switch that connects up to 6 individual circuits to an external power source like this generator for key items like the fridge, lights, pumps, central heat (if gas powered), etc. That was my arrangement. Perhaps I should do a video on how I connect this to my home..?
@@DansWay if you have it already hooked up to your house and or something you want to do. I don't see why not
The way you describe the way it runs isn't 100 percent accurate
