Sam, your camera journey has been MASSIVE and so fun to watch over the years. I love that you're still such an advocate for the GR series. It's amazing, and I still own and shoot my GRII because of your vids. What a great camera! Congrats on your family, too. You and I had baby boys around the same time. I have another coming in April. Best of luck to you in 2023, man.

I have to admit, if it weren't for your videos about the ricoh GR, i never would've bought my GR3 which i absolutely love. I used to be a big digital camera hater, started with film and always shot film and hated how it felt to shoot digital (both the cameras and results) but somehow the lil GR managed to completely change my mind and it's an absolute joy to use for me and i love the results! it's become the perfect complement to my film shooting and i can avoid a lot more wasted film on stupid shots but still take the nice photos on film if i want to! also having it in the pocket anywhere and everywhere has been awesome! i dont even feel like it's with me but it always is.
I totally understand the cult now thanks to you and i really enjoy your take on photography and really focusing on the photos and results and experience rather than hype trends like most other youtubers. love the content thanks :)

Never had the dust issue myself, and I dropped my GR3 into a glacier lake in 2021, it was under water for several seconds. Dried it after with battery out, battery door open and lens out. Still works fine now in the end of 2024 :)

The GR III Diary Edition looks really really nice. It has this 90s vibe, grayish brown tech gear from back then. Inly the black lens doesn't fit the look. Love that it is a real limited edition with only 2000 available. Ricoh just gets better and better over the years ;-) The GR III is still a classic.

Hello Sam my name is Ben. I have five Ricoh cameras. Four of those cameras are the older GR editions. I have had dust in some of my lenses and I have a way of getting rid of it easily! I am being 100% honest with this information and I am way too old to lie to anyone about things, especially about cameras. If you turn on a Ricoh camera and extend the lens barrel a little bit then remove the battery to keep the lens in that position. Then hold the camera tight in one hand and gently take the attached hose of a vacuum cleaner in the other hand and place it over the lens barrel. Turn on the vacuum cleaner or have someone else turn it on and suck out the dust from the lens. If the dust is very bad you will have to do this a few times. When your done place the battery back into the camera and turn it off then back on. Take a photo of a white surface at a higher aperture like f/8 or f/16 to see if the dust is all gone. If it is not do the procedure over again until it is all gone. I have done this procedure and it worked perfectly well for me! Trust me this works and does not damage the lens barrel at all!

I think we need to use our GR until it is basically not functional, at the end it is a tool and the great think about limited editions is that if you want you can put them in shelf or if your prefer the look use it even more.
And as much as I love how the GR feels in my hand and the aesthetic of it, I love the results I get from it even more.

Samuel hi! Thank you for your honesty about the Ricoh GR iii... that shows in the way you express your opinions about the camera.
I never owned a Ricoh GR and I am strongly thinking about getting one, but as some, I am waiting for the next one (Ricoh GR iv)...
Of all the problems and different tastes that people seem to have with Ricoh GR iii or the changes that they want for the next model... to my humble opinion if I could pick one change (or problem addressed), that would be a solution of the dust problem.
WHY THIS and not a bigger battery, or the return of the flash, or a flip screen or faster focusing or whatever else people want...
Well, the whole point (as far as I can understand) of Ricoh GR is to be a pocketable camera and ready to shoot in an instant which the camera is very good as many agree...
Battery problem, just get more batteries.
    Flash problem, get a flash.
Flip screen, it would be great but no real problem, just do the work or after some time as many photographers do when they know their camera, they shoot whithout even checking the screen either on low or high angle...
Others mention better focus but as far as I can understand IF you understand how to appropriately use focus, especially Snap focus, you are more than well...
BUT if there is a dust problem (I honestly don't know how much of a problem it is), then it beats the purpose and the way you carry the camera, because since this is a snap shot camera, how better to carry it than have it on a pocket just as it is, no covers for the lense or extra little cases etc. and in less than 2-4 second, take it out and take a shot... If you are afraid to use it like that, bare in the pocket, because some dust might stay on it and then get in the sensor... then it beats the purpose it was built for, right? And as far as I can understand IT IS NOT EASY TO CLEAN THE SENSOR like on many other cameras because of the way the camera is built. So you probably have to send the camera to a Recoh center in order to clean the sensor. And for more than a few that means waitings for a couple of weeks...
Anyway, I do hope that this is addressed at some point, but whatever the case, this looks like a great camera to have and shoot with...
    Take care...🙂

I actually like the Greige color and I don’t mind paying a little xtra for the customizations. You can buy Adidas and the special color way will cost more, some cars simply add gold badges and charge thousands more. I don’t wanna say everyone who complains about the price are not able to buy one but in tech that is often the case. Like food cultures are different so people shouldn’t yuk someone’s yum.
    Great video, appreciate the honesty

I owned a GR III for a while and absolutely loved it. I didn’t like the look of the camera though, and the Diary edition actually looks great to me and makes me interested in picking one up again!
I have no doubt that Ricoh is working hard on newer models in the GR series, and while the GR III is still very popular around the world, releasing special editions before they are ready for the next big release is a great way to gain exposure and keep people engaged.

Color film is simply not worth the price anymore. I enjoy shooting B&W, which is fairly stable in price, so I bulk roll at home and shoot mostly Ilford. I also dev and scan at home. As far as I can tell, this is the absolute cheapest way to shoot film, and I enjoy the entire process. Highly recommended to those who want to continue to shoot film and not go bankrupt in the process.

@@sdhute You'll pick it up in no time. A few tips: Use Hewes negative reels from the start. They're expensive, but they're the best, and they'll last forever if you don't drop/bend them. (The only roll I ever ruined was due to mis-loading a non-Hewes reel.) Dark bags are great. Matin film retrievers are great to use, allowing you to save and reuse your 35mm cassettes for bulk loading (now or some day later). If you're developing color-neg film, grab a sous vide for easy temp control; this isn't necessary for B&W development, which is more forgiving.

@@justinkingery2489 do those hewes reels go into a tank similar to a Paterson ?

    • @justinkingery2489
      @justinkingery2489 Год назад +1

@@sdhute Yessir, they do. I've never used the plastic reels, but I've heard that they're mostly good to use. If one ever fails, though, the lost shots just destroy you, lol, so I don't take the chance. The Hewes reels are just flawless. I've dev'd a few hundred rolls with them over the last few years and never had a single issue. Loading negatives onto them blindly in a dark bag becomes very easy very quickly, and it was very difficult with the cheap, no-brand stainless reels.

Had the GR 2 and dealt with the dust issue wasn't a biggie for me just more mindful of it in post. When I first got the GR3 had the dust issue but it wasn't a deal breaker since I really like the camera, however I do take issue with its build quality. It definitely doesn't feel as robust as the predecessor especially with the IBIS. With the sensor moving about when the camera is off can be a bit disconcerting and I strongly believe that's what lead to some AF issues later. I also accidently dropped it once and that was all she wrote. It was never the same even after 4 tries sending it to Precision Camera while under warranty and out of the 1 year warranty (pretty costly since they fubbed the screen during repair, IBIS was wonky, and reaching out to Ricoh was no help what's so ever). Regardless of this I bit the bullet and just purchased an entire new one and so far so good. There's definitely a different feel to when I compare the models. Now I'm just more mindful about how its stored to help mitigate sensor dust but should it occur I rather open the camera myself to take care of the dust. Defiantly would love to see a WS version since I life to shoot in all conditions, that would definitely serve me better. Still a GR user but definitely some love lost with the GR3

The 40% Price Increase is only relative to Japan as importing into countries like Japan with the Taxes and Custom Taxes is pretty expensive as well as shipping cost. Kodak Film in Japan has always been a struggling area as Fujifilm is so prevalent in the country. As for places like the United States and U.K where Kodak film is manufactured the increases will be normal to about a 10-17% raise. In the article that was posted, the sources are linked from Japan financial sources which show the raises in Yen and the recently economical issues in Japan has caused that increase to 40%

I’d love to own a Ricoh, but when it would be stretching my budget to buy one, and on top of that I hear people complain not only about dust, but loose dials, or even the camera failing outright, I just can’t justify the purchase. I think this is where some of the complaining about the special editions might come from, is people who really want to love the Ricoh GR but can’t justify it. And then, to those people, it seems like Ricoh is rereleasing a product with known issues to hold off on releasing something new that could potentially fix those issues. If anything though, I’m glad to hear you and most other people seem to have no problems and enjoy using your Ricoh.

I treat my GRIII exactly like that: a snapshot camera. Any time I'm thinking of pulling out my iPhone to snap a quick photo or series of photos, I use my GRIII instead. But if I want to do some serious street photography for a few hours, I take my Nikon. I prefer having full frame.
The GRIII for me is just for snapshots and fun and pocketability (I do keep it in my jeans pocket) but with the benefits of a sensor that's wayyyy bigger than the one in my iPhone.

Positive film is basically just slightly Saturated, Punchy, Cool and Red shifted. Whereas Negative film is basically just slightly Muted, Flat, Warm and green shifted.

Oooh I really want to see that conversation with Bello! Good thing I'm a member! And, for the new GR Dairy Edition, I think that the champagne color scheme has one HUGE advantage: champagne coloring of cheap plastic consumer products from 20 years ago is a great look to have if you want people to act naturally and not be intimidated or concerned about the fact that you're pointing a camera in their direction. It has the 100% easy-going thrift store vibes. I don't have a GR but if there's a Diary edition GR IIIX in that color scheme for the same price as other versions, I might opt for the champagne positive vibes!

My real problem with GR is not the dust, but the lens stuck. Yes I experienced (dust issues) it, but like what you said, Samuel, I see it as a compromise for the lens design. I have 2 GR and one of them can't retract the lens after popping out. I send it to the RICOH authorized service center, here in Indonesia. And voila! My GR is now completely dead. I return it and got my GR in a fully stuck lens (and even stuck at the language menu). I've tried everything I can do to get my GR at least like the previous condition, but they denied (saying the part is now discontinued--And I really don't know how they're thinking because I just simply can't agree to receive my camera in even worse condition, I was already paid them too actually). I really love the GR, but the aftersales services like this made people I knew reconsidering more on having GR again. At least, for me, I wouldn't buy GR for several generations ahead.

I have a very old but high tech Chinon genesis 3 camera and I'd love to get it back on the road taking film again. I love it even if the servo motor is quite noisy, but it can take pictures in the dark with infrared. It's pretty clever but like you say film isn't cheap and then you have to get it developed. One of the big advantages of the Chinon is it can't take a picture unless it's in focus so that saves wasted film.

Really great points about the Diary edition. When I first saw it, I'm like, "why?" but I realize that it's because the bulk of the camera world is made for a lot of us photographers that want black cameras, but that leaves out a large part of the world that would enjoy using this gear more if they resonated more with it. These special editions are camera maker's breaking out of Henry Ford's "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black."
I like black cars, but am glad they make them in the breadth of colors that are available every season.

Hey Samuel. I loved to see the rain in the window behind you because it's a sunny weekend here around 24C and nothing reminds me that we are in the middle of the winter. :-) All three topics - the special edition, the film simulation, and the Kodak price is not really interesting to me - I moved to Ilford completely a few years ago when Kodak already did the same with the prices. About the dust - it really exists. And additionally to my first GRii (actually the first edition without WIFI), I know many people fighting with it on their sensors. I know that I killed my camera when used it extremely during bad weather conditions and it always was in my pocket. But some people I know used their cameras very gently and infrequently, but also got the dust on their sensors. I don't complain and don't move to another brand. Just found someone who got the real new GRii because of the hype Ricoh created around this camera and his friend persuaded him to buy it, and finally got that he uses his phone for the same snaps more often, so, I bought from him an almost new camera. BTW. his friend also sold his new as well GRii. This is the main issue - GR is not a camera for everyone. I don't agree with the statement that GR is a snapshot camera. Every camera can be a snapshot camera, even some huge DSLRs with a 600mm lens. It depends on the photographer.

Just downloaded the updated now and will be out shooting tomorrow. As a Ricoh GR fanboy I'm going after all the special editions, so will probably add this one to my collection too.
I have the GRDigital 1 10th Anniversary Edition, the blue one, the GR3 Street, GR3x Urban and just recently got the GRIV Digital White Edition which is fantastic, f.1.9 and can shoot in 4:3 format both of which I'd like on a new GR ideally.
I'm surprised they haven't done a Daido Moriyama signed edition GR yet. Very informative video thank you very much.
Love the background by the way, think I spotted Bruce Gilden looking in!!

still rocking a GRII, never had a dust problem and been in pretty dusty places…Patiently waiting for the GRIV where I hope they re-include the legendary pop-up flash from the GRII (only reason I haven’t purchased the GRIII)

Nice video as usual Samuel. I am in the process of selling my NIkon Z6 and N lenses as all I find myself using lately are the GRs. I love these cameras. Super quality in your pocket.

I loved the show! Can’t wait to see what else you put out. I hope more film simulations come out. I personally like the Ricoh simulations over the Fuji. The Ricoh team is the best too!

could never warm up to the Ricoh cameras, but I do enjoy the occasional use of the Fuji film simulations. Usually try for normal/natural look with color images; but B/W images with the Fuji simulations are quick, easy and fun. Still use BW film as it is easily available in Southern Calif and process myself. Scan with lightbox and hi-res digital camera tethered to desk computer.

I enjoyed this compilation of topics thoroughly. I immediately went and downloaded the firmware - it's amazing when any company adds features to a camera years after it was released, and totally worthy of praise. It's the mark of a company that cares about the people using their gear. I'd argue Fujifilm has gotten stingier with these updates in the past few years, witholding simulations on older cameras even when they have the same sensor and processor as a newer model. Now I just wish I could apply these Ricoh simulations in Capture One after the fact so I don't have to develop the RAW in-camera. I keep hoping that will be announced one of these days. :)
Also, the F100 is a fantastic film camera. I love being able to share lenses with my Df. It's so fast and reliable - I like to call it a "digital film camera". It's pretty quiet, too, lacking the characteristic mirror slap that's been carefully attenuated.

What I would like to see is an interchangeable lens version. The concept Fuji film executed with success in the 100V and Xe4 lines.

The actual test reminds me of the user settings of GRD2:
    Posi like Contrast +1/Sharpness 0/Saturation +1
    Nega like Contrast -1 Sharpness 0/Saturation -1
It happened to be the two user settings I used most in those years.

Unfortunately i had to sell it cuz i couldn't get over the fact that the wheel dial got messed up on mine 3 times.... 3 TIMES!!! 😫😫😫 If there's anything i would ask for them to fix is that.

The Dairy Edition should be a white chocolate bar sold at the Ricoh stores.
I like the editions, though they should take ideas as well.
I would pay extra to customize aspects of the GRs here in Canada. Wraps, handles, hotshoe. I'm jealous of what they have in Japan.

    Definitelly nice informative video 🙋
Nowadays i´m trying to somehow re-ignite my photography passion and GRIII looks very interesting. I have an old D7000 for i think 7-8 years and shooting is not that pleasant experience as it was and should be, with this bulky beast with its output quality.
But big APS-C in such a small body, with decent picture quality, i think i missed something few years ago. GR III is now officially on my to-consider list, besides used X100F. But this new film simulation you are mentioning in video and level of support from ricoh, looks like i have my personal winner.

I like this new format very much, and the "new studio" is priceless. You had me fooled until the moment you revealed your home setup!
A couple quick thoughts based on subjects you touched in this first episode of The Samuel Street Life Show...
    - I have been coveting the Ricoh GRIII since the start of the pandemic. The extensive online reports of the GR's dust issues have kept me away for the time being. I've decided to wait for a GRIV 'dust-proof edition'. I wish I had some insight at this moment as to Ricoh's plan for the update, but I figure we're due for an update ... right?
    - I love your Nikon F100! It will always look nice on a display case even if the rising film prices keep you away from actually using it. Late last year I acquired a Pentax MX film camera after feeling the urge to dive back into film photography as a side pursuit. I've yet to even load a roll of film inside it. Will I ever? Not at €19.99 per roll of Kodak Gold (about $30 Canadian).
    - I've gone ahead and tagged a few of my Instagram posts with your new hashtag. You better get on it because it looks like there's a deluge of community-generated images coming your way! 😁
    Cheers!
