To me, perhaps the single greatest thing this game did (besides the orgasmically smooth controls), is the fact that it never loads. Even if you die. It never wastes your time ever. It's fucking brilliant and I've never seen it done since. Really disappointing, but I always loved that about it, even back then.
Interesting fact about the loading, whilst loading areas, the game would make you trip before you could enter (this is only if you get there fast enough to trigger the tripping though).
I still remember that even as a kid, I thought that this would become the standard in gaming. But where are we today? At least Sony seems to try to make this the standard now with the PS5; they even used Jak 2 as an example!
@@AltName7 when did they mention this? I'm actually getting plat for Jak and Daxter on the PS4 and holy shit man... This game's transitions are smooth af. It had me thinking about PS5's supposed speeds.
I liked all of the Jak and daxter games but none of them had the magic that Jak 1 had. The environments are beautiful and the gameplay still feels good to this day
Chiefsmackabro Yo I agree with you, but the gameplay is exactly the same in all 3 games. They only added more to his moveset by giving him guns, vehicles and with the eco forms. Unless you're talking about how the objectives change or the different lvl designs
Totally agree. Jak & Daxter was a great 3D Platformer set in a beautiful fantasy open world. The Jak sequels came off as sub par GTA III clones with Jak as a character, did not like it.
The Precursor Legacy is my favorite of the trio and I feel like its pretty underrated. If Jak and Daxter do comeback one day, I'd like it to return to a similar concept. Eco is awesome.
going back to a similar concept would be tricky since the guns pretty much replaced the whole concept of eco (or at least up until green and light eco (dark eco is used for the peacemaker guns ) )
One thing that really made the Jak and Daxter series age well is the animation system. Most PS2 games had very stiff animations and the change between animation states (idle, walking, running, jumping, attacking, etc.) was instant. Jak and Daxter blended those animations, like you would do in a modern game engine, which makes everything seem incredibly fluid, which is further reinforced through the good movement system.
I also think Jak 2 and Jak 3 cutscene models are a contender for best looking characters of the sixth generation, even compared to many PC games at the time such as Half Life 2, no character reach the incredible amount of 15.000 polygons in a single character until the seventh gen.
This was the first ps2 game I ever played because my cousin let me play his copy when I was little and it is the main reason I bought a ps2 but until I saw this video I couldn't for the life of me remember what title in the franchise it was all these years I only remembered it was jak and daxter and I thought the precursor legacy was a prequel not the first game

IMO Jak and Daxter 1 is the best traditional collect-a-thon 3D platformer. Tight controls, seamless vibrant world, excellent music, the list goes on. Jak 2 is the best in the series though.

Never played this game more than maybe 15 mins when it was new, I just got this game for myself a few weeks ago and started playing it last week. I completed it 100% (got all 101 power cells) a few mins before typing this, and the game definitely holds up 15 years later, I had fun with it. As for Daxter, I actually thought some of his statements were helpful when I didn't know what to do exactly.
I liked Jak 3 the most, that game's main storyline was epic and I liked how it was an expanded, improved version of Jak 2. Jak 2 is a very close second though, the only thing I didn't really like was the infamous Drill Platform mission on Hero Mode..
As a kid Jak 2 and 3 were always my favorites of the series, but after replaying I think that Jak and Daxter is a much better game. I still like the other two but idk this game just has more charm for me now
Jak 2 is easily my favorite one in the series, with the precursor legacy in second. I've still never actually completed Jak 3, but what I did play was fun.

Good, review, but I completely disagree in the music department. I LOVE the music, and I can playback every track in my head. Definitely worth the listen.
I’m 5 years late, but, me being 16 now, I can still remember the songs when I was 4. I just came back to play the franchise and the music is superb and even better than what I remember. Legitimately the best soundtrack of any game (nostalgia bias).

There's one thing about this game that makes me a little sad. First we have the *beautiful* village and beach, but once those are cleared, we get to environments with less and less colour. I wish the game could give us more colourful environments after the beginning. I mean, it's very much possible to make an environment colourful and mysterious. I just wish that all the worlds could have some beauty to them. The same problem occurred to me in Spyro the Dragon's Beast Makers world. Also, I'm sad that this is the only game to be like this, the other games went into a direction I care less about.

I just announced my Spyro the Dragon Let's Play and I'm about to record right now so wish me luck. You are the absolute best!
There is a way to record from a PSP, dude. If its a 2000 or 3000 model, I believe, you can use component cables to connect it to your TV/Capture card. I'd really like to see you do Daxter as its really good considering the platform its on.
The way everyone makes you buy power cells in this reminds of me of Mario Sunshine and how they make you use blue coins to buy the shine sprites that will literally save the village they live in xD
Man, I remember wanting to play this back in the day, but I was getting to the age where I just wanted to play GTA3/VC and Halo 1 all day. Its a shame I couldnt experience it at release
Jak 2 difficulty, first third - okay not that hard. Second third - a few annoying missions, but still not that hard. Final third - WHY CAN'T I STOP DYING!?!? (Insert breaking controller here) seriously though, was naughty dog a little nutty in the head when they made that last third?
My favourite platformer collectathon. It has beautiful landscapes, smooth gameplay, fun and bouncy atmospheric music, and is easy to 100% making completing it multiple times very satisfying. As for Jak 2 and 3, they aren't really for me. The gameplay in 2 especially is very punishing and the mood of the game shifts from fun-loving and pretty Jak 1 to guns, swearing, turn-up-the-Linkin-Park Jak 2 and 3 very abruptly. I would have liked them better if the mood shifted a bit slower.
I kinda consider Skylanders to be Spyro's hell, or a dead end job that you're forced to take because you need to keep the lights on. Not that Skylanders is a bad game, but its clear that Spyro will never get a solo title again.
I am really conflicted with the series and this series was the point Naughty Dog changed from focusing on fun and fast gameplay with a little story to great stories that don't feel so great to play (for me anyway). Jak 1 is my favourite because it's the most fun. It's bright and colourful, tight controlling and downright challenging in some areas.
This was a great review and I agreed with most things you said. I have a feeling your Jak 2 review is going to have an opinion very similar to mine, I'm looking forward to it.
what i like about this game, is that you don't lose lives everytime you die, because there are none. No game overs either. Naughty dog during development of jak and daxter be like..."OH! you think you're gonna get a game over, you're gonna lose your lives?" *removes game overs and life guis off of development* "Those things aren't needed anymore, Game overs and limited lives can Suck it!".
Says he's gonna piss people off with this review Doesn't really say anything too negative about this game Can someone explain to me why this review would piss someone off? I thought it was a pretty fair review.
We'll since this game is probably my favorite platformer I can say I don't agree with some of his complaints so I could some more die hard fans could get mad I'm not but I just disagree with some of his complaints
He says this series is worse than Ratchet, Sly and even Ty (seriously?). That pissed me off because Jak and Daxter is much better than all of them combined, Jak is love, Jak is life.
Maybe he was referring to his reviews of 2 and 3? Haven't watched them yet, but based on his reaction at the end of the video, he probably really ticked fans off with the review, similar to how Caddicarus did with a brief mention in a random video that he doesn't like Jak 2. Granted, he could have also been talking about how hard Jak 2 is.
***** personally i think Jak II & 3 had a better story than the first 3 R&C games although that's probably because they're all woven together in one way or the other whilst the first 3 R&C games can almost be played in any order and the only thing you'll miss out on is a few character references that don't really amount to much. also i know this review is based on the reviewers own opinions but it feels a little unfair that he's comparing the first J&D game to a bunch of games that came out at a later date
To me, perhaps the single greatest thing this game did (besides the orgasmically smooth controls), is the fact that it never loads. Even if you die. It never wastes your time ever. Jak 1 is my favourite because it's the most fun. It's bright and colourful, tight controlling and downright challenging in some areas.
This was a great review and I agreed with most things you said. I have a feeling your Jak 2 review is going to have an opinion very similar to mine, I'm looking forward to it.
this game is my childhood
Pretty much the only 3D platformer I could ever get into.
what i like about this game, is that you don't lose lives everytime you die, because there are none. No game overs either. Naughty dog during development of jak and daxter be like..."OH! you think you're gonna get a game over, you're gonna lose your lives?" *removes game overs and life guis off of development* "Those things aren't needed anymore, Game overs and limited lives can Suck it!".
I heard that Ace Attorney music at the beginning. You can't hide the truth from me!!
Is it a shame that I will be doing my own LP of Jak and Daxter soon, coincidentally? I love the Jak and Daxter series.
6:16 me when I play this game at ten o'clock
Says he's gonna piss people off with this review
Doesn't really say anything too negative about this game
Can someone explain to me why this review would piss someone off?
***** agreed but I wouldn't go on a rage quit for that.
