You did a great job Mike. My guess is that small Combat 12T really helps to cut through much of the turbs. The story would be a bit different with a large flex wing in that chunky air.
I've been wondering how well a 19M NorthWing Discovery would perform in mid-day thermals with the lighter wing loading, but I don't want to trade good handling in turbulence for sink-rate. I'm not an early morning or evening flyer and light wind days have been rare around here this year.
@@mikedillonhaswings That Discovery wing would likely work very well with working lift. The challenge would be dealing with the blender scenario right off the deck on final. A better compromise would be the double surface 16.8M Solairus wing. Better penetration yet very good sink rate for a light trike like yours. In last 8 years, i have had a few hairy moments on my Solairus in blender situations on final but so far always able to negotiate through then.
I don't know if I can define "safe", but I feel secure and confident my aircraft and I will be able to handle the conditions I fly in. The strip isn't perfect and has its limitations.
The original 130Ah "High Capacity" battery pair was installed on this flight. It is now 4 years old and still gets the job done with no noticible degradation. I also have a lighter weight 50Ah battery for thermal days, and purchased a 120Ah "High Power" pair this year for use on really hot days or when I want to run high RPM for extended periods.
It would be nice, however the terrain and width of the parcel do not allow for another airstrip. Crosswinds alone are no problem, but throw turbulence & gusts into the mix and you have trust your reflexes and muscle memory from every flight you ever made, get the trike over smooth ground, and don't let the wheels touch down until it feels "right". Flying a sub-13M wing helps a lot. I can't imagine doing this with a larger wing.
@@mikedillonhaswings I was just thinking, if you were headed directly into the wind, you would crash at a lower ground speed. LOL! I know what you mean about flying until things feel right for a touch down. If it doesn't feel right by the time you get to the end, you can always go around. Take care friend.
Epic flight. Definitely not ready for that. Very impressive
Good job! Great video!
Congratulation Mike. Not easy.
Good job Mike. Looked a little nasty at the bottom.

Thanks for the posting Mike!
Under those conditions I know that it's not that enjoyable, but do you still feel safe?
Nice strip btw

Nice, how are the batteries holding up? Have they lost much capacity through the years?

So what's the problem. LOL! Just kidding. That looked crazy. Maybe put another runway in for strong crosswinds. Would that help?
