I am in the process of ordering mine now! Thank you for this review. Your canoe trip vids are the reason I became interested in these and then speaking with a couple people I know who absolutely swear by the comfort of a hammock compared to a tent sleep has made my decision to switch a very easy one. I also want to note how happily surprised I was that Amok's website has prices that include all duties and taxes for international orders! And the shipping is remarkably cheap! I am beyond excited for my first night of transforming into what I am sure will be the most comfy and cozy bear burrito in all of Northern Saskatchewan! :)
I've had Draumrs for about 3 years now. Just got a 5.0 this year. Fantastic for side sleepers and I wake up refreshed rather than sore and achy like I did in a tent. I'm a canoe camper so I never considered an ultralight, but I just found out from your Temagami video that you can see RIGHT THROUGH THE SIDES. That is seriously cool! I don't know why they don't promote that more. On their website, the ultralight is against a white backdrop, so I had no idea that the material was semi-transparent. Less claustrophobic and easier to see the lions, tigers and bears if you need to!
Really nice presentation of the news on the Draumr hammocks. I'm really impressed by the Draumr UL, what I also like with is that it has less pack volume. Cheers and happy trails!
Thanks for the preview. Been contemplating getting a hammock, specifically lay-flat designs, but haven't pulled the trigger on that particular purchase yet. Cheers!
Always a pleasure to see a new upload from lost lakes, I'm walleye fishing right now and am taking a break to watch way more important!!! Thanks for the great entertainment bro!!!
I'm not into hammock camping as I have to go pee a hundred time each night 😂 but I find their products pretty interesting and well made . And you are a good ambassador too , if I needed one , I would surely be infuenced by your review because I think you are a honest person . Thanks Jon
That is what the mesh Nalgene holder is for, so you don’t need to dismount. (Well it could be) I just get in and out a lot so have getting in nailed now. I kneel on one knee between the 2 low mesh pockets for center then lift my leg in. Stunning sleep, anywhere.
Bon, can i sugest that you take magnesium chloride? You can get it in any drug store. Boil one liter of water, let it set until cold, pour in a glass container, pour one table spoon of chloride. Drink half of cup at night time, or in the morning and in less than two weeks you'll be new. I advise you its very bitter, it tastes awful, but you'll get used to it. And may Yahuah Eloheinu be with you.
Yes, I have to admit the Amok hammocks are really impressive, I have never used one, but my curiosity has been made aware, of course, you are credible, cheers!
I went camping a couple of months ago on Whiskey Lake (on one of your videos) and discovered that a hammock is the way to go there....not a flat spot for miles! I enjoy your videos and hope to do a couple of lost lakes trips this summer
Great review, nice summary of each of them, I really like you can use a pad in it AND there’s an ultra light version, I do bike packing adventures and that’s a big help, cheers mate love the channel
As someone who sleeps in a recliner mostly, this looks so comfortable. I have a sleep number bed, but i cant' sleep all night in it. I need this in my bedroom!
Nice review Jon. I always consider your opinions on products. Could you possibly do a review on what sleeping pads would be best fit and comfort for the hammocks? Hope you and Erin have a great and safe year in your adventures.
Thanks a lot William :) All I can really say is that in the regular Draumr, you can use other pads that are 197x65x9cm (this is an industry standard known as LW/long wide) but I believe the baffles need to run lengthwise along the pad, not across. In the Draumr XL, you have to get the Fjol XL pad for its specific dimensions (I tried my old neoair and it did not work at all)
Very good quick summary, only major point I think you missed is the ultralight set also packs down a lot smaller then the normal Draumr, tarp and pad. Really jealous you got the new set, for me the 2 big downsides of the Draumr were the weight and the bugnet zipper over the ridgeline, looks pretty perfect now but since I mostly just do canoe trips I cant justify buying a whole new set to save a couple pounds but I love Amok and am glad they're still working on their design!
Hey Jon. Was that gathered hammock a double? My my tripping hammock has those seams. They get a bit uncomfortable in the night. They have no give like just one piece of fabric. Thanks.
Nice video, they really do look awesome. I just priced one out with the tarp hammock and pad it was like 869.00 USD which is like 4000 Canadian haha I kid but it’s a lot. Kind of on the expensive side but none the less if I was to get into a hammock style camping this would be the one I would go to
Hahah it's not a cheap hammock but you get what you pay for with it too...their quality definitely matches the price :) And another way to look at it is if you were buying a high quality *tent,* pad and tarp, you'd be paying at least that amount
Thanks for the good video! I still have 3.0 and I'm still in love with it :). You said the UL you showed is regular version - how tall are you ?? I am 180 cm and I was wondering if this size is right for me ... You look like it is a bit too small for you ... Regards! Paul
hi, question. when you are sleeping, does you body tends to slide forward ? i am asking because most video on youtube shows ppl sitting in it, instead of laying flat.
Naw, it's because the Draumr has a "chair mode" that allows you to sit up like that. You pull two straps on the head end and two straps on the foot end, and it gives it a shape like a chair. Very comfy
Hey John, you'd need a very customized DIY under quilt to work with the Draumr's design, and there's currently not one made commercially that I'm aware of. So it's all about the pad. Their Fjol Winterlight has an R value of 5, rated to -18C/0F. I've used it at that temp in the hammock and on the ground and added a cheap closed cell foam pad...had no issues. I made some winter camping tutorials for Amok (recently posted on their channel) if it helps. Basics: ruclips.net/video/Ja618OVWEMU/видео.html Staying warm: ruclips.net/video/Q9u9FQzUKJw/видео.html
Hammocks open up so many possibilites for less travelled boreal forest camping. And the Amoks looks amazing. I just wish the ultralight package wasn't so expensive!
So key for our area. Aside from beaches, finding a good tent pad is tough, and if you have two tents to get down, god help you... It ain't cheap but you get what you pay for with their stuff. The quality is excellent
Regarding the Ultra Light Sleeping pad and its Winter Light relative....would the Winter Light be too warm for summer? I like the idea of the warmer pad for winter but don't want to over heat in the summer. Hoping you can clarify for me. Thanks.
For sure, the Fjol Winterlight has an R value of 5 which rates it to -18C and the UL is R 3.5, rated to -7C. However, like most temp ratings, they tend to be a bit on the generous side...just the standard for the industry. I've used the Winterlight up to -20C but I add a standard closed cell foam pad to boost the insulation. Any colder than that and I'm not going out without the hot tent lol
Long time hammock camper, and I hear the sweet sirens' song: Buuuuuuyyyyyy meeeeeeeeeee....buuuuuyyyyyy meeeeeeeeee. Their song mesmerizes me, compelling me to "add to cart".
The regular fjol is technically a little cooler (R 3 vs 3.5 for UL) but it's marginal so I would buy based on weight more than R-value. The weight difference is quite a bit more substantial
As far as I know, they don't use any distributors here and the only way to buy them Canada is direct through their website. They're awesome for side sleeping
Hi, I am 175 cm. Should I go for a regular size? Some highly recommend going for an XL regardless of your height because it has more room. From a keeping balance and user-friendly point of view, which size would be better for me? If your girlfriend has a chance, would she still stay on the regular or switch to the XL? Thanks
Still fascinated that a pretty small Norwegian company picked you guys to show off their wares - excellent choice on their part! Also, I so badly want a couple😂
Hey Jon, is the Amok 100 times better than the Hennessy? I'm still on the fence on if I want to switch or not. Sleeping relatively straight with the Amok seems to be less of a challenge. I sometimes struggle fitting a sleeping pad in the Hennessy and has resulted in a few sleepless nights lol. I got an underquilt for it though, I'm hoping that makes a difference.
We definitely prefer the Draumr. We loved our old hammocks so I'm not saying you're at a big disadvantage, but now knowing what the Draumr is like, we wouldn't go back. It's more comfortable, roomy, and more of a home where you have room to set up a bit.
This looks nice but I’ve been through monsoons in my Hennessy without a drop of water getting in. It looks like the wind would blow the rain up under the tarp. Have you experienced this?
really nice detailed review I really wish I can get one of these I would love to review it and try it myself it's a little out of my price range though I believe
I haven't used any in recent years aside from this Amok Skjold 10 UL (which I love but it many not have the tie off loops you want) but have also heard good things about these ones from CCS www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/tarps.html
It's very strong but it is inherently less durable than the regular (with a lower weight limit as you know) so I would say if you're close to that limit go with the regular. I know it's a little heavier but not bad and you can still save grams with the UL pad and tarp. You don't want to worry about hearing a rip when you gingerly hop in. And if a seam did tear, the hammock would be pretty useless which could be a problem if you're on a long trip
So for someone over 200 lbs & 6'3" I'm guessing the XL model? Nice mod on the bug net: a must have in many parts of Canada (as you know only too well).
How tall are you? I am 6-4 and have an original XL Draumr. I like the UL version but if I can fit in the regular size I'd take that. The XL is plenty big but almost too big...
Hey Kirk, I don't find it makes a big diff. The main thing is the pad you put into the hammock. Their Fjol Winterlight pad has an R value of 5 and if it's really cold (coldest I used it in was about -20C) I'll put a CCF pad on top. Did two vids for Amok on winter hammocking on their channel this past winter if needed
If you’re still reviewing comments, I just bought the UL for its lighter weight. Do you have suggestions for winterizing it? Preventing the wind from getting through, for example. I don’t really want to have to shell out for a whole new hammock (Draumr 5.0) just for the winter. Plus, it’s quite a bit heavier.
If there's a windchill, close the bug mesh. That'll cut the wind substantially, however it may trap frost from your breath. And avoid setting up in open areas like the edge of a lake where you'll get more wind of course. The pad is very important, and you'll want one with an R-value of 5 or higher (like their Winterlight pad). You can also throw a regular old closed cell foam pad on top before you get in to add a bit of warmth. I've done that down to -17C (with a -20C sleeping bag) and got by. But generally I only use the hammock down to -5C to -10C
@@LostLakes thanks for your really informative videos and thanks so much for the response. What about wind coming through the fabric of the hammock though? I’m wondering about fashioning some “wings” from an old sleeping pad to stash behind the triangular grab handles on each side. (??)
No prob :) The bug mesh will really cut the overall flow through the shelter but yeah some will still cut through the hammock and mesh. You could try to figure out some sort of wrap but I think you'd be much better off (in terms of weight, bulk, performance) by just adding an overbag to your existing sleeping bag to help cut wind. And yeah, if you can, set it up in a naturally sheltered spot where the wind won't be such a big factor
I would. I've used it in two enormous rain storms this summer...two of the biggest I've experienced. If the rain comes with heavy wind, it's important to pitch the tarp low and close to the hammock to avoid mist or driving rain getting blown under. And ideally to situate the hammock in reasonably dense woods to help as well
Hmmm I'm pretty sure it would cover you as the Skjold 10 is 3m x 3.8m (10' x 12.5'). And I imagine yours is square on the corners so slightly more coverage there
John, how tippy is the XL? Which pad would you recommend and hoe important are the Amok tarps to get compared to an alternate brand to use with the Amok? Lastly, how are these for side sleeping?
Not that tippy to me...I also put my pack under the footbox so that it can't go to the ground. I would really try to stick with the Amok pads, and if you want the XL I believe you MUST use their pads. And whatever pad you use must have vertical baffles. I tried my NeoAir in it, with horizontal baffles and it can't hold it's structure. I've used my Eureka VCS 13 tarp with it and it works well, but their Skjold 10 is an exceptional tarp so easy to secure. Excellent for side sleeping!
@@LostLakes I JUST got a Draumer 5.0 XL largely because of your endorsement and your use of them in videos. I ordered about 4 days ago and it is here in S. Ontario from Europe already! Very fast service and the product looks great. I look forward to setting it up and using it and I thank you for reinvigorating my desire to camp! Stay safe and keep at it, it would be great to meet someday, we share many of the same outlooks on life.
Hey Jon, I have gone back and forth with the idea of putting my small tent in storage and buying an Amok Draumr XL to do some cold weather camping. And thought since I trust you and your opinion I would ask you what you thought. I am 67 years old and weigh a little more then I should. I am not concerned about getting into the hammock BUT am concerned about getting into a sleeping bag in the hammock. At 67 I don't bend quite as well as I used to and I worry I might not be able to navigate in a Draumr. What are your thoughts?
Hey Jay, as much as I hate to say it, I would caution you somewhat. Getting into the sleeping bag in a hammock is a bit of a wriggling act. But I truly adore sleeping in it...I guess you could re-sell it if it didn't work out, but I will admit there's some risk of that given the need for flexibility in there
Hey - thanks for this awesome video, super helpful. One quick question: with the lighter material of the UL, do you find that bugs can bite through the material? I know you're covered and insulated with your sleeping pad, but let's say your arm was resting on the mesh material, I guess you might be a little bit more susceptible to that? I know it's nitpicky, but just curious if you have any experience with that. Thanks, now following !
@@LostLakes thanks for the quick response man! Is there much difference between the UL and the regular 5.0 in that regard? Do a lot of early season stuff when the bugs can get pretty thick so it’s definitely a consideration for me. As Just trying to decide which one to get.
Great video! Curious about the seal where the top line goes through the bug net. I've seen mosquitos squeeze through very small holes in screen. As a NWO and Manitoba canoe trip enthusiast I worry about this being a week point in bug protection. Thoughts?
Thanks HAP! I'm wondering the same actually. We'll see in a couple of months! If they can, I guess I'll get by by throwing spare clothing over the holes. But I suspect Amok will have thought of this. Maybe it closes the gap when under tension...I meant to check
Question: How tall are you? I'm looking to buy one, but difficult to decide regular or XL, as I'm right on the 185cm limit they suggest as max for the regular. Seeing you in the regular UL in the video, it would be good to know your height
@@LostLakes No trouble :) ! I am about to take the hammock dive so I am looking around for options. On an unrelated note, I have to say I like going back to your older vids and seeing how your channel has grown - along with your shelter selection hahaha. You have a keen eye for nice scenery and your editing is on point, no nonsense! Keep up the great content, I know I'm always in a for a treat when I see a new upload.
I liked the first one I have to admit, but, and you wouldn't believe it to look at me. My ancestors got out of the trees 4 million years ago and I owe it to them not to get back in....I'll always be a ground dweller (or knuckle dragger as the ex wife would have it) :)
@@BrianthatiscalledBrian You make a valid point there sir, I'd need a very long line to attach between two trees. Maybe they could invent a one tree hammock...

Definitely go XL :) I barely fit in Erin's regular size Draumr
@@LostLakes Guess I'll sit in the queue for the contest with the rest of the herd :D
@@brucewayne2091 😜
How tall are you? I am 6-4 and have an original XL Draumr. I like the UL version but if I can fit in the regular size I'd take that. The XL is plenty big but almost too big...
Same height as you. My girlfriend has the regular and I've tried it... Definitely stick with the XL!
Great product review
How is the 5.0 in colder weather. Since it’s not completely covered like a tent,do you find it gets quite a lot colder when trying to sleep?
Hey Kirk, I don't find it makes a big diff. The main thing is the pad you put into the hammock. Their Fjol Winterlight pad has an R value of 5 and if it's really cold (coldest I used it in was about -20C) I'll put a CCF pad on top. Did two vids for Amok on winter hammocking on their channel this past winter if needed
Any tips or tricks on getting into a mummy style sleeping bag? I usually wrestle around a fair bit only to end up with ok results.
Hahah afraid not, I'm in the wiggling around camp too
Pole set should come with 2021 hammocks at the price and a option if you lose them or have a 2020 model.
It's not a cheap hammock but you get what you pay for with it too...it's a quality product :)
And yeah, if you can, set it up in a naturally sheltered spot where the wind won't be such a big factor
beauty!
I’m going to have to try one sometime but I’ve been holding off because of the “bear burrito “ fears 😂.
Hahah the funny thing is the strange sense of security we feel behind 1mm of nylon in a tent... But I've been there, I get it!
Pretty nice. 👍🙂
The sleep flat is the selling feature, quite unique.
When's the Amok giveaway contest? 😉
5:30 lol!!
We'll have to see when they wanna do it, but I'll keep y'all posted 😉
Great stuff! I would like to try out one of those, but they are slightly out of my budget. I'll have to stick with my gathered end hammock for now.
Would you use this hammock on tropical weather_
I would. I've used it in two enormous rain storms this summer...two of the biggest I've experienced. If the rain comes with heavy wind, it's important to pitch the tarp low and close to the hammock to avoid mist or driving rain getting blown under. And ideally to situate the hammock in reasonably dense woods to help as well
@@LostLakes thanks for your answer!
What type of sleeping bag do you reccomend with these?
No style in particular, any bag will work. I use down mummy bags, the higher the fill power the better of course depending on budget
I already own a 10x12 foot sil-ny tarp from Cooke Custom Sewing. Would that pair well with the Draumr or would I need to purchase the Skjold tarp?
Fantastic! Their service is top notch. Enjoy it Tom :)
But I truly adore sleeping in it...I guess you could re-sell it if it didn't work out, but I will admit there's some risk of that given the need for flexibility in there
That is slick. I like it.
Yep! I do indeed. In thick bugs it can be an issue and I have to lay down clothes to rest my limbs on
@@LostLakes thanks for the quick response man!
Is there much difference between the UL and the regular 5.0 in that regard? Do a lot of early season stuff when the bugs can get pretty thick so it’s definitely a consideration for me. As Just trying to decide which one to get.
@@allkite I think both are susceptible but less so in the 5.0. Except for serious gram counters, I'd go with the 5.0
Brilliant
Well done 👍🏻
Thanks Michael!
How well do these work for side sleepers?
Very well. They're flat sleeping hammocks. I'm primarily a side sleeper
I'm 191cm. At 185 I would still highly recommend going with the XL
Thank you for the overview Jon! Do you have access to a coupon code by any chance :D?
Thanks Delmar! Afraid I don't have one for ya....just the odd clearance sale on their site is all I've seen
@@delmar1705 really appreciate that Delmar! Hope hammocking treats you well 🙂
btw, did you seam seal your amok tarp ?
Yeah I did just for maximum security out there. Such an easy job, might as well
Looks like a very well developed hammock! Norwegian company, I see.
Another quality Nordic product!
Great video thankyou
Thank you
I liked the first one I have to admit, but, and you wouldn't believe it to look at me. My ancestors got out of the trees 4 million years ago and I owe it to them not to get back in....I'll always be a ground dweller (or knuckle dragger as the ex wife would have it) :)
Si, they had to get out of the trees. There aren't many on Dartmoor. 😉🙂👍
@@BrianthatiscalledBrian You make a valid point there sir, I'd need a very long line to attach between two trees. Maybe they could invent a one tree hammock...
I’ve been on a waiting list to preorder one for awhile! They must be pretty popular lol. Great informative video!
Thanks Hayden! Seems like they have no trouble selling out
Most comfortable Hammock ever.
Hell yea!
We would love a promo code for a discount Amok !
Wish I could help but I don't think I've seen them use promo codes (I could be wrong)
How tall are you?
6'4" so the XL is a must for me
I’m 6’3, so I will go XL
@@robertestrada9643 yeah absolutely
Come on! Get them to sell on Amazon Canada or something !!
♥ Awe, hahaha!

I definitely don't NEED a new shelter system...
"Much doubt I sense in you"
I have never used a hammock. More of a tent guy.
