I met him at Cars and Coffee in Scottsdale! This guy was even wrenching on his Bugatti at the car show. He was so enthusiastic to share his story and his car with everyone, I can’t think of another person who deserves to care for that Bugatti.
Look at his fingers at about 17.5 min. This guy isn't your work on a car once in a while kind of guy. This guy is the real deal. Jealousy of your opportunity to meet this guy Kchhibs. :)
If only I knew what a legend I was talking to. I wasn't even sure if the car was the real deal or not it just seemed to good to be true. I asked him about the color and he rummaged through the boot head first for a few minutes before emerging with a pack of cigarettes that matched the car color and I was like you have got to be kidding me. Seeing this thing in person was absolutely legendary. I don't know if I will ever see something this rare and special again.
Also I agree, the guy had a full set of spanners out to work on the car while he had it parked! Turned it on and revved the hell out of it, the smell was so different because it doesn't run on pump gas.
Kchhibs On what kind of gasoline does it run??
That early, motor fuel was termed "benzine" (assorted petroleum ether hydrocarbons, not the same aromatic-ring thing as modern benzene, nor actual ether) and came in sealed cans. What Travis is using? No idea.
Yes, there were a few alcohol-burning monsters (methylated spirits or 'wood alcohol' or 'fusel oil' is basically impure methanol). But by 1913 most cars were fuelled by some sort of distilled fractionated petroleum.
The cigarettes that inspired the Bugatti blue are the French "Gauloises". The "vente restreinte" packet on the show are Gauloises cigarettes issued to troops, hospices, hospitals (!) and various support personnel during war time. "Vente restreinte" means "limited sale", or in today's lingo: "not for resale".
This comment needs to be pinned at the top!
This is the type of info I read the comments for.
Love it.
I think you mean "venti restaurant." 🤣
😅
Gotta love a guy who restores his 100 yr old racer, takes it for a drive and nearly stacks it! Truly deserving owner.
And not only 100, but the oldest known of its type on the road. A true car guy right there.
The fantastic thing here is that this car is still alive. It's not sleeping in a museum or in a rich collector's garage. It's still doing the thing it was built for.
Yes indead
I agree…indeed.
Absolutely.
Alan could be the most enthusiastic enthusiast to have ever been on Jay's show. I was almost as excited as they were just watching them. Hope a guardian angel follows the car everywhere.
I hope a guardian angel follows Alan too, he's a great guy.
Fantastic. When you've tracked down your favorite car's founder's wife's favorite cigarettes... you're truly all in. Beautiful automobile. Thanks for sharing with us!
heh
I must grok...
Ettore Bugatti was a genius. Great to see this car is owned by such a knowledgeable enthusiast.
That was really good. Wow, the owner is so passionate about this car. There should be more people like him. What more can you say ? Great car and video.
More people driving $20M cars?
xynudu it's really awesome that the owner is unafraid to drive this thing and to let others drive it as well
I could never drive a car like this on public roads. with my luck, a drunk ,uninsured illegal would run into me and then take off.
Venus Reena not just those kind of cars, he meant drive old cars almost anywhere. 🙂 And I agree
I completely agree, the only way a car can stay running and serviced is Daily. True you can’t drive most in the Colder seasons. But some you can and should!
This is an important piece of history. Not not just some antique car. Notice how much time Leno spent on this episode.
Not really. History spans billions of years, humanity over 1 million years.
@@zebunker smartass....in the last 122 years of automotive history.....
I love this guys enthusiasm and the fact that he was hands on with this restoration rather then farming it out I wish there was more guys like him out there he does justice to preserving the spirit of these automotive milestones.
Mr. Jay said " kind of a special episode"!? This is my dream episode that I have waited years for.
Mr Alan Travis is now on my hero list for driving this car as it should be. (And he seems a nice guy)
THANK YOU JAY LENO!
THANK YOU ALAN !
the most competent guy on this show so far
I think mister Leno is pretty competent too
This is what I absolutely love seeing. Not just these old awesome cars, but getting into more detail on how it works on the inside. I really hope to see more of this type of content. Would love to see Mr. Leno re-go over some of his older cars like his aero-engined stuff and Bugattis, etc. and go into a lot more detail in how everything works with closeups and pictures of the components. Kind of one of the nice things about the Restoration Blog, which I hope we get another one soon, is that we get a little bit of that type of content.
Of all the reasons I'm subscribed for, these videos about these old cars are the #1 reason.
Dear Mr Leno (& Travis!): The "Vente Restreinte" in such bold lettering on the light blue packet of cigarettes (at 3:15 ) means "Sale restricted (to army troops)". Those are probably the famous "Gauloises", so-called because subsidised by the republic and for issue to the troops. The colour might well have inspired a 1913 Bugatti's paint scheme, but I reckon the packet design dates from after 1914. You probably would not like the taste, Gauloise cigarettes were rather bitter-tasting, but NCOs were issued with so-called "Caporal" (corporal) cigarettes, made with a better class of tobacco.
Wow !! That was interesting. Thanks for the history lesson. I love stuff like this !!
Did you notice the pack also had a contrasting darker blue stripe. It looks very familiar. So I would say not only the bugatti light blue came from the pack, they propably understood it was a good combo so they used both colors on their cars.
Yes! And the two-tone design with a darker blue was much more prominent later with the art-deco design of a standard pack of Gitanes ("Gypsies").
Very much so yes!
Richard Linter exactly, I've just reply too. I'm French and was conscripted in 81 and I used these cigarettes, called Troupes (Troops) in French. But the Gauloises had better taste and were publicly sold. Caporal (Corporal) are similar to the Troops, the Vente Restreinte ones.
Car guys like him are a dying breed. I doubt his kids or grandkids are as passionate as him about these things. They'll probably auction these treasures off after he gets too old to lovingly tend to these machines. His workshop looks absolutely fantastic.
debbie downer
He has no kids or grandkids. His facility will become a museum when he passes away.
The engineering of this car is far more advanced than any American car of time. Can't believe it doesn't have a fan for cooling. Absolutely beautiful car, Jay time for a race Mercer vs Bugatti love the show.
There will be always enthusiasts like him...
No they’re not a dying breed.
Alan the owner had 1800 hours of silent-Bob restoration time, and he came ready to talk & inform.
Haha dudes giving me anxiety
I’d DD that wagon
Whenever I hear the phrase "car enthusiast" from now on, a vision of Alan Travis enjoying his ride in this car will pop into my mind's eye. Thank you, Alan, for keeping this glorious piece of history functioning as a car, accessible to the public, instead of moldering away in some museum. I can't imagine a better match of car to owner. Great stuff!
All these years of watching JLG and this episode just hit my top 5 favorite list.
Wonderful episode. Thank you Alan and thanks Jay for sharing.
This episode simply blew my mind! A car this old, with heritage and history been driven around in the valley next to a bunch of distracted suv drivers, has some massive level of badasserie by both guys!!
Jay Leno is and forever shall be a God Damn American Hero.
I don't know about Jay being an American hero, as a title like that belong to people in the US Military, Firefighters, rescue responders, and Good honest police officers, but he sure is one of a kind, and i'm glad he's been around for so long. He truly was the last watchable late night host.
Commodorefan64 he's a hero to the car world at least
Jay Leno is the biggest car nerd. Such a nice guy. Really good to see someone so enthusiastic about something after all these years still. Love his collection and him. Seems like such a cool nice guy.
Finally, Jay! This is what your channel is all about.
Try not to change it, please.
These two just feed off each other and are totally lost in the details , forget the cameras all together , love it , such passion .
Mr. Travis...what a jewel. Congrats.
one of your best episodes yet, thanks for sharing
It could have only been better if they had done the Bugatti vs Mercer thing!
RK F Probably for the better, don't want to see this things crash, they're not really cars with good handling.
ditto that
abbaby555 I have seen cars like this before but only as museum
pieces. its really cool to see one alive and in motion.
when I worked at Megacycle we made a new cam and followers for one of these --- those 'banana' cam followers are a section of a 6" dia pipe --- they move in a brass block lined w babbit to guide them -- we hardfaced the tips of the followers to run on the cam ------ a fun project to work on ----
So far, my favorite episode. Allen's grasp of how every component of the car functions and why, and the history of its designer/builder is fascinating. Amazing to me that the design of an engine 107yrs ago was so precise that it runs cool without a fan! Just beautiful.
That, is a passionate, passionate, man.
Alan Travis' enthusiasm and passion for this car is incredible, and truly contagious. He's a true car enthusiast. The funniest part is the two of them in the car...looks like 2 hams squeezed into a can.
Jay, Possibly the best episode you've made. Brilliant!
What about the taco one?
Brilliant. Best episode ever. Alan is THE man. Thanks so much Jay . Perfect.
that sound is calming for some reason smooth for the day im sure
Gotta love these old fellas gabbing about history, craftsmanship, still driving these rolling museums. I would be terrified to leave the driveway.
Why? It’s totally cool.
This may be your finest, most enjoyable effort yet....
We can feel the enthusiasm of both you and your fellow collector...
You, sir, are a real treasure...a real American treasure...
Great video and great guest, this guy's enthusiasm and knowledge is infectious.
This may be the most historically important car that Jay has had on in a long time.
Jay's guest was a pleasure to listen to with his vast knowledge of the car!
The absence of wisecracks were nary missed in this one. This was like church for petrolheads.
A revelation of a drive if there ever was one, and if I had to choose a "best of JLG" this would be at or near the top.
Thank you (again), Jay!

Well said !!
Better eps came since your comment
How entertaining to see an absolute Bugatti nerd! And wonderful to see such a great piece of history on the road.
Ah, finally a real Jay Leno's garage kind of car. These are the cars I watch the show for. I would love to see more underneath, or more detail of how the steering with brakes worked. I love to see the detail of how stuff was done back then. Liked seeing the valve illustration.
Interesting "Wally Cox" type character. Just a quirky fellow who knows his history. Of course Mr Leno does as well. Interesting to see them talk about things they are both knowledgeable about. Mr Travis sure seems to be an excellent steward shall we say, for this piece of history. And apparently loves bringing it for people to see, at C & C events too.
Absolutely! To bring cars like this out for the public to SEE and touch is Far better than locked up in some rich guy's warehouse/garage that no one except a few other rich guys get to see.
Jay is amazing, he has so much experience he can climb in and drive anything. That takes a lot of talent. And he knowledgeably talk about what kind of oil it should run.
Explain the gauges. “That’s the mirror”.....,🤯
"this gauge shows whats behind you"
Technically It’s mounted on the dashboard and it’s round with a glass surface ... I guess his high passion didn’t allow him to ignore it :)
I went searching for this comment. I like Jay's "riiiight."
Up there with the Duke bros. 'BLT' sandwich in 'Trading Places'. Nice one Alan : )
Great very enjoyable video that guy oozes enthusiasm.
I wish jay was my dad i wish he could adopt me i love this show its awesome. No one apreciates cars like jay
John Ryan i think the only thing that doesn't apreciate cars is woman and girls they make fun of all of us guys for liking cars. Jay i wish jay could adopt me my dad make fun of for liking cars people these days are harsh i was born in 2001 i went a salt lake city utah Ferrari and maserati i saw a red laferrari behind the red velvet ropes i like the new lamborghinis but there like children they need tindering and recharging its not like the olds one were you can leave without driving in a month and go on vacation in February im going on a cruise
John Ryan you apreciate cars jay loves them and apreciates them
A reality check for all those guys who wish Jay were their dad: Jay and his wife have no children, evidently because they didn't want any.
Ask this guy a "Yes" or "No" question and he'll talk for 2 weeks straight without stopping XD
Im sure That’s because he’s very passionate about his car :)
What does XD mean?
@@robertblanchard6196 I believe it represents a big grin with screwed up eyes. You need to look at it sideways on and it'll look like this....... 😆 it's meant to show the comment isn't meant to be taken seriously.
That was unbelievably informative and satisfying , thanks !
I love the guys enthusiasm, these two could talk for ever about this car, a perfect match :) ... this is what its all about .
Over a 100 years ago...amazing
I cant believe he pointed at the mirror and said "that's the mirror". 16:07
Well, it's bolted to the dash......
Best episode yet. He did a service to the world in his restoration. Well done. I wish your TV Show on CNBC was more like this, I like the history of the thing, the interesting facts. All the silly stuff on CNBC I could really do without. This show is sooooo much better.
Michael Ellis That show trys too hard to be Top Gear.
That might be partially true. My favorite part of the CNBC show is the part with Donald the appraiser. At least they give some back ground on the automobiles. :-)
I for one, am speechless. Just when I thought I’ve seen it all, along comes this bugatti.Thank you Jay and the guardian of this for showing us this fascinating piece of History. If I had to choose between driving a newer Bugatti or any of the older ones I would definitely choose the early cars.
You are really making great RUclips legacy of knowledge and entusiasam about cars for people all around the world. Thank you Jay
There's something absolutely charming about the way it sounds!
Thomas Jones it's all in ur head, if a Toyota sounded like this u wouldn't bother even noticing
You are correct. I wouldn't expect a modern Toyota to sound like a car from the 1910s, unless it were a Toyota from the same vintage. The type of car has a lot to do with the charming quality.
I love it when the owner is so knowledgeable and so enthusiastic about his car!! Beautiful car and great story. Thanks Jay for showing it.
now thats an expert. great shoptalk.
She marked her territory at 19:51. Jays floor needed some zinc.
Lol , that's really observant , I missed that one and had to go back and have a look!
Saw that as well! I think at 105 she is allowed a drop or two!
But, but, but it's not a British car !? What's happening here ? Aaah, oh it's 105 years old car! That might explain it ! :-)))
The shot you are referring to was done after the 45 mile drive.
Beautiful car sir. I love it and I love the color.
I hope this guy writes down all the starting procedures and tricks to running this great car for future generations, another good one Jay
Hopefully
This and the other episode on Jay's Bugatti's by Dennis Cage made my day. This one is as legendary as the automobile covered here.
Alan Travis' is one stickler for perfection, he not only restored the car to its former glory, he did it with such a panache that imbibes the spirit of the car and its era. I was literally transported to the golden age of the automobile. Thank you Alan for your enthusiasm, your passion and for sharing your immense knowledge of Bugattis
Thank you Jay for sharing valuable insights on your classics as well as those of probably the greatest connoisseur of Edwardian cars like Alan
Wow, thanks.
Thanks Alan, it is an honor for sure!

What a treat Jay! Big thanks to Alan for bringing it by the shop for all of us to check out. Beautiful restoration man. So great that she's actually driven around too, instead of being stuck in some dusty museum! Fun ride and great story, beautiful machine. Thanks again!
Your comment brings it all together. Rarest of machines brought vividly back to life on the mass medium of the Net by two passionate aficionados.
This guy is super sympathetic and knows his stuff to perfection.Just his cigarettes, he doesnt :-)) GAULOISES.For every frenchman/woman it was a MUST. Fantastic show Jay, you as well were hugely inspired by all the thing.this is the style we love your show.definitely more desirable than 500 hp triple turbo blown japanese gadget cars ;-)
Probably the most excited I’ve seen Jay and his guest and the car are so cool. What a great episode!
I really like this episode. Jay let the other guy talk because he really knew his stuff. Told everything about the car. Awesome. Give us more Jay. Thank you.
This is such a wonderful episode: a piece of rolling history that is being driven by its' owner, and informative conversation where I learned a lot. Thanks for this Jay and Alan!
I'm a simple man I see a new Leno upload I watch it.
Was really hoping he'd break out the Mercer, and actually race him. One can dream..
He truly loves that car .
Man what a jewel of a dashboard,...
Very knowledgeable guy!
"Did you have any close calls?" "Other than you mashing the gearbox, not really Jay."
cpfwriter it's non synchro it's gonna make some noise
So thankful Jay is preserving vehicle gems like this, my great-grandfather is smiling in heaven. Reminds me of Ted Turner early preservations of very old films, sad so many were thrown out like common trash in Hollywood and are lost forever.
two absolute enthusiasts. what a treat to watch this. that guy must have been truly thrilled when Jay asked him to be on the show and share his car.
Wow, what a treasure and the nice owner know's his stuff, great episode.
Thanks for sharing this gem !
All your videos are amazing Jay, but this one really resonated. I felt like you were genuinely happy in this video, especially once the driving portion started :) Please keep sharing your love of the automobile with us, we are both very lucky and honored to view your passion (fueled by your success) online for the price of an internet connection and some hardware.
This is the type of steward who deserves to own/take care of one of these incredible old machines. For one he drives it, gets his hands dirty maintaining it, and is not only passionate and knowledgeable, but willing to share it with the world.
Far too many of these cars are locked away in hidden bunkers and haven’t turned a wheel in decades.
That was fantastic! Possibly the best episode with the most interesting vehicle you have done. To be able to converse with the guy who restored it and know what he is talking about is a testament to the depth of your knowledge and love of these cars. Keep it up!
We love Jay classy simple guy, nice shot driving through the Sunset !!
i wish a bugatti leaked oil in my garage
i can come empty my uncles eb110 sump in your garage if you like
I wish one would run into my car
i wish i had a garage.
This video is why I love Jay Leno's Garage Show, thanks for both of you.
Best episode yet. It's been 30 minutes of great time to watch and listen someone who loves and understands. Great! Thank you
Amazing! Every episode should be like this!
Absolutely lovely episode. Insane car and a really enthusiastic gentleman!
Absolutely Beautiful... Excellent Restoration... This is why I love your channel Jay... A Rolling Piece of Automotive History... with a Great Story....
Absolutely love this show and everything Jay does, but when he couldnt put it in to gear and it ground a few times the poor owners face was heartbreaking...
105 years old this year. That's insane.
i could watch Jay all day long and sometimes i do! :D
OldStuff jay is an old shoe comfortingly pleasant
I found Jay's show about a year ago and power watched all the episodes over two week period. Two weeks of Nirvana.
Me and my friend met the owner of this car. He came into our Restraunt. He’s super nice and had incredible knowledge and collection of cars.
What a passionate and pleasant gentleman. What a perfect guy to look after that car
The only thing more valuable than the cars are their story. I am amazed by this whole story and i really want j leno garage to be 2 times a week. There are millions of car stories out there
This guy lives in his shop clothes. He is dressed like he spends more time on his back under this car than with his wife, and with those large, permanently dirty hands, he knows where that oil leak is coming from. Old school, man!!
this man's knowledge and love for his car, shows that to some people a car is more then just a machine! i loved listening to him and could hear him talk all day about it
I Absolutely Love The Sound Of That Engine.
What an enchanting automobile. I could drive this car all day long too Jay! Thank you for Sharing this amazing car with us!
he is talkin to jay like jay is a rookie. he tryna explain vacuum pumps for example and jay is like yea right right i have those in my bentley’s
Loving all of the brass, and bronze, and copper; it's just such a beautiful machine! Great video, as usual, thanks Jay!
I had seen the car and Alan at a Cars and Coffee in Scottsdale a few years ago. Yesterday I convinced my wife to attend cars and Coffee in Scottsdale and was telling her about the 1913 Bugatti and how the owner loved chatting about it. Sure enough the car and Alan were there. While we did not chat I was excited to get to see this wonderful car again.
What a beauty, great episode Jay...thanks!!!
That was a joy to see and hear that car still on the road after so many years when it was made perfectly 1913
Somehow your Bugatti videos are all terrific. The spirit of Bugatti shines through after all these years. Alan is like one of your dream guests when you were on the Tonight Show, just get him on the set and off he goes, no bs or ego, entertaining, infomative, full of enthusiasm.
This is why I watch your videos, Jay. You go into detail on the mechanics, design and history of these vehicles and that's what makes it so interesting, I especially enjoy videos about the older cars, the classics from a time when everything was so much simpler.
