My first though for a sad song that gets me every time is Sufjan Stevens' Fourth of July. I got out to see Quivers back on Oct.10th and that was definitely a happy time. In fact, at 6:14 you reminded me that I still didn't own the first album and that my local indie shop has had a copy sitting there for a while...and since I'm forgoing heading down for Black Friday this year, I just ordered it online and it will serve as today's singular BF purchase. The Spectacular Sadness of Rex Hobart and His Misery Boys is an album that deserves mention in any discussion of sad bastards. Hobart's entire output (5 albums, maybe?) is filled with funny, sad country songs. The dude has a way with turning phrases. Check him out if you aren't familiar.
I've got two Rex Hobart albums. Love them. Back from when I'd buy almost everything Bloodshot put out. The new owners are supposed to be reissuing some of their classic back catalogue for the first time on vinyl, let's hope Rex Hobart isn't overlooked.
