      Easily...
      Outside of Disney, I would say Knobles is the best amusement park in America. And certainly the best of the traditional style parks.
      I first heard of the park either in the late 90s or in 2000. It was through a Discovery Channel TV special on Dark Rides. This is before the days of RUclips. My Dad taped it for me. I didn't get to visit until 2006, but I've been back a number of times since. The park is over 300 miles from me, but worth traveling from anywhere to visit.
      The park also offers free admission, free parking, reasonable prices on individual tickets or ride all day, reasonable prices on food and places to cook & bring your own food. It's like walking into a time machine visiting the park, but they also offer some newer attractions, two free museums and free shows. This place is by far the best value of any park in America. We usually visit for 2 or 3 days at a time and come and go as we please and visit some other things in the general area too. My wife and I spent some of our Honeymoon time in 2000 visiting the park, but had been a few times before. I hope we're able to go back this year.

      I found this park through a friend of mine. I thought Knobels was fantastic. Food was very good, great prices and a course free parking and admission for the folks they just want to relive their life as their youth. The only drawback is they won’t let me ride the little hand cars 😂

    My Knoebels experience was the same throughout my entire child-hood. We'd get there about an hour before opening, ending up near the front of the parking lot. The park would open 1 attraction at a time, so we'd get something to eat first, then onto the Pioneer train.
    Feels like a different world now.

    As someone who drives a tow truck and handles a lot of equipment and tractors, I've noticed an uncanny ability of mine developing where I go hunting for grease fittings and other moving parts that need lubricant.
    The whipper alone scares me and I hate to think the sheer amount of money they spend on grease alone. Literally everything on that thing moves, has a zerk, and needs to be lubricated.
    For such a simple ride, it's surprisingly complicated and the fact that they've kept this running since it was originally built for Coney Island is astounding

The Giant Wheel, Flying Turns, the Skloosh, the Pioneer Train, the Impulse, the Skyway, you picked a really good list. I used to go on Kosmo's Kurves a lot when I was little, but I've outgrown it. I also really like the motor boats.

    • @towcat
      @towcat Месяц назад +1

      Hershey is small enough to be welcoming but big enough to be intimidating. The quality of the rides varies like mad and it has changed so much in the last twenty years or so.
      We used to go once a year and I think right about the time Fahrenheit was built was when the feel started to change. Fahrenheit itself wasn't the issue, but it was around that time when Hershey started updating and the whole ticket process and entrance got more tedious and the prices started going up again and when the 4D show or whatever it was opened, that was about the last few times we went
      Hell we spent most of the time in the water park anyways

    • @TheNinjaDC
      @TheNinjaDC Месяц назад +1

      @@towcat
      From my visit, the quality inconsistency was noticeable. It's sorta all over the place.
      Parts of the experience are top quality. Legitimately comparable to Disney or Universal. The chocolatier and surrounding restaurants are high quality. Chocolate World is an experience onto itself, and has the best theming at Hershey. And the fast lane system is both modern but simple.
      However, the park is mostly run well below its current attendance. The park is getting Cedar Point, Kings Island, and Magic Mountain level attendance, but it still operates like they are still like a medium sized park. The ops are bad to terrible, except for Wildcat's Revenge. The ride quality is inconsistent. It's cartoonish that wild mouse and a fair traveling Tornado ride is in this park. The prices are also more overpriced than Disney in many areas.
      The layout is also terrible, but that really can't be fixed.
      Hershey needs to focus on quality consistency and crowd management more than new rides for the next few years.

    • @towcat
      @towcat Месяц назад

      The layout used to get me lost every time we went. I always focused on the weird little cut-through-like path that goes past Coal Cracker and SideWinder and that got my bearings.
      Some of meh ride quality I think also comes from it's location. Namely, Great Bear. There's some interesting science and story behind it's construction and why it starts strong and then just sorta fizzles out.
      I didn't care as an child but I think something that would really bother me now as am adult would be how the rides were named behind a theme and then very few rides backed up that theme, if that makes sense
      A few of them don't really need theming or story telling, such as the classics like Super Duper Looper and Comet, or "newer" rides with a gimmick, like Great Bear (grumbly track) or Sidewinder (reversing and inversions), or Stormrunner (wicked fast), but so many just sort of...exist
      I haven't been there since at least 2013 or earlier and I'm told evenore has changed since then. I look forward to but also dread my future return, when which I'll probably go "oh cool wow I don't know my way around anymore" and then go spend all day in the water park like old times

    This brings back some awesome childhood memories. The very first ride I rode with my uncle was the Flyer in "72" I was 8 . The Merry-go-round has always been a popular ride , always stayed packed . I caught the brass ring one time in all the time we rode it 😂. The haunted house was a blast , it has changed over the years . We didn't have all those big roller coaster rides like they do today but we still had a blast . Roller skating(no longer there) on a Saturday night was great fun . We loved the hand stamp nights - for one low price you got a stamp on your hand then you could ride any ride as many times as you want , except the Haunted House. I so miss this park .

    Knoebels is certainly a quality park, stuffed with classic charm. It might not be the best spot for thrill seekers on a coasters only diet, but Phoenix is certainly among the best woodies in the world, with ludicrous airtime with only a buzz bar. It genuinely feels illegal at times, and is an experience you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

      I love the Phoenix! Being able to ride the world's best wooden coaster at a park that's less than a 2 hr drive from my home ... that's really special!
      I also think the _Impulse_ is very thrilling, because it only uses a lap bar. There's nothing like staring straight down at the ground from 90' up with only a lap bar.
      One thing I'll say for the park, though: it's VERY safe. I always trust the rides and attendants.

    The part that confused you in _Black Diamond_ is my favorite part, because it references Centralia. In short: decades ago a crew decided to burn a large amount of trash in an old pit, and they didn't know it was over top of exposed coal veins. (That's the burning trash pit.) The smouldering coal has been burning ever since and has driven out the residents as it destroyed the land underneath. (The spinning tube is the underground fire.) Thrre were sinkholes, but a house never fell through for real; that's an embellishment XD
    Centralia is only a few miles from the park and is popular with urban explorers to this day. If you want more information, _Fascinating Horror_ did a good video on it.

    I'm always excited to see Knoebels get covered by news, social media, etc. But at the same time I hate it....because for years it was PA's best kept secret. Now the park is getting a little busier than how I like it. Good for the Knoebel family and staff, bad for me lol.

    • @daffers2345
      @daffers2345 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, then it's not my imagination that it's been getting busier. My friend and I are going a week earlier than usual for our spring trip; it's been insane the past couple of years because we kept going on Armed Forces Day. Hopefully all us fans will be able to find some times when it is not so busy.

    Actually......the ride Knoebels is best known for is their traditional Bill Tracy style Haunted Mansion. It's won all kinds of awards over the decades including best haunted house in America many, many times. Even beating out Walt Disney World at times. The Knobles Haunted House is one of the best surviving examples of what great amusement park haunted houses were like 50 years ago.
    The Flying Turns is a good ride too, but not known in the world of amusement parks today the way their Haunted Mansion is. The Flying Turns is actually a newer ride there based on an old fashion design.

    For anyone here who has been to Knoebels (and it seems like there are a lot!), what is the "feel" of Flying Turns? I've never been on a bobsled coaster but in concept in looks like it would be such a nifty, free, barely-in-control kind of feel. :)

    • @daffers2345
      @daffers2345 2 месяца назад +2

      The _Flying Turns_ is a very fast, smooth ride that feels a little bit like a log flume without the water. Imagine a big fat marble in a curved marble roller. There is very little noise in comparison with most roller coasters. All you hear while gliding down is the rolling of the little wheels on wood.
      You must be weighed so that the carts aren't overloaded, and that makes each ride a little different. It does often feel wild and out of control. Sometimes you go almost sideways and feel like you're going to fly out of the carts. It's great fun, especially if you ride with a friend!

      @@daffers2345 Thanks very much for that very detailed and cool response! Reading it, I can sort of "feel" the sense of flying around a turn in a marble-roller and falling back into my seat.

    Maybe Knobels should include another carousel ride, but with various rideable animals including some horses along with donkeys, goats, pigs, rabbits, roosters, camels, ostriches, giraffes, lions, zebras, tigers, deer, and other animals!

      That was popular many years ago. You can see many "menagerie animal" carousel animals in Knoebels' Carousel Horse museum. There's a lion, a goat, a camel, even a pig.

(Which is probably why its over 100 years old and no major attractions) but i think i'd rather take the kids (if i had them) to ceader point (a few extra hours away). Or find a local 6 flags kids would have way more fun there
