I was expecting the M160 to be the smoothest and my favorite but I was wrong. The AKG D190 is the smoothest, my favorite, and I really like what I perceived as a "woody" tone that it offered out of the acoustic. Second place goes to the m160. Third place goes to the M201.
Cool comparison.......All these mic´s are good ones. Slightly different charakter voicing, but everyone is nice. I prefered my AKG D190E. I use it over 30 years and it works brilliant.
@@absolving Mate, I've got 5 or 6 of 'em.....they sound great on pretty much anything! You can still find them going cheap, and they're tough as old boots....you see one, snap it up.
@@ianbailey5262 I know, but a ribbon is still technically a dynamic mic as it produces output by a dynamo / galvanic process of a conducting element interacting with a fixed magnetic field.
Amazing, thank you for doing this. My 57 beta (with a similar ART opto comp) sounds exactly like yours, which is great because I wouldn't have believed it when I heard D190 and M160! Incredible, it was like I was listening to a record from the 60s or 70s, totally surreal. Do you remember where you placed the mics?
You are welcome! The mics were placed something like the top mic in this picture, but very close the guitar. static.cakewalk.com/support/knowledge-base/images/kb2007013311/Vertical_Spaced_Pair_Smaller.jpg Probably too close as some lower frequencies are coming quite strong.
Though the M 160 is a ribbon microphone, it wins hands down here, the 57, close behind. The 609 is just a little too hyped, the lows sound sweet though. The other choices? Not for me, not on this player, playing this riff, on this guitar, through this amp anyway. In a mix? Who knows!
Yes, M201 is a great mic. I'm planning to make another dynamic mic comparison soon. A better quality video (1080p) and three more mics (MD421, MD441 and M88).
classic 57 and Beyer 201. Others are useless for acoustic guitar. Maybe even all dynamic mics are useless) A good condenser will be much better for a guitar
Yeah, but, the ribbon element sounds entirely different, has a much flatter response. Unlike most ribbon mics, the M 160 is HyperCard. rather than Figure 8, and so, the prox. Effect associated with Figure 8 is a bit tamer. Sweet sounding mic.

One of the neatest mic comparisons I've seen.

That was my pick really opened up at the end with the full chord voicing.
akg d190e win is crazy mik clean sound
That ART comp sounds pretty darn good! My favorites are the Beta 57 in the first set, then the e609 and M160 when compressed.
+snippletrap Thank you for your comment! I pretty much agree with your choices.
The D190 and the M160 for me.......they just impart that 60's folky sound without too much brittle top end.
I might get a D190.. Gotta love the vintage sound
the M160 is a ribbon mic
@@ianbailey5262 Yeah, it's a double ribbon 'dynamic'.....ribbons are essentially dynamic mics, just a different design to 'moving coil'.
Sorry my bad, thanks for the ‘lesson’ 👍😃

D190 ...WOW !
To my ears the M160 is the best - by far.
I AGREE IN A CLASS OF IT'S OWN , VERY NATURAL
the M160 is a ribbon mic
@@ianbailey5262 Yes, of course. So?
The 201 and 160 sound best to me. I think Beyer make the very best dynamic mic's for recording instruments.
I agree, great mics along Sennheisers like MD441 and MD421.
the M160 is a ribbon mic

m201 is about right, m160 little over bass
Great comparison this thanks. The M160 is a ribbon mic btw...
You are welcome! Yes, ribbon mics are also dynamic.
My preference go to the Shure Beta 57A and the SM57.

Danke für test. sehr gut ! Weiter so ! Danke !!!!
D190 and M160 sound far better than the others to me...no ratty top end :) BTW, was that something from Rush in the first part?
Yes, they are the darkest ones, both very usable. Yes, the first part is Closer to the heart by Rush.
Shure Beta 57A or Sennheiser e609. I like the Shure more.

Ribbon mics are dynamic mics. Same basic principle.

@@Janne19691 yes, fair play, please excuse my ignorance, I thought they were 2 different things but they're basically the same.

The Beta 57 for this acoustic. M160 is a good second.

The M160 is a ribbon microphone, not dynamic.
Hi, ribbons are also dynamic because they both are electromagnetic devices.
