I'd contend that one thing Thanos relies on is that others are often intimidated by his mere presence.
Almost every time we've seen him those around him just kind of stand in awe for a moment, which lets him select and use one of the infinity stones to its best effect.
The one time that doesn't happen is when Thor plants Stormbreaker right in his chest; which gives Thanos just enough time to follow through with his plan. Which shows that he can be taken off guard easily by people who don't hesitate.
In this case, Ultron just doesn't care. There's no "Oh no! Mr. Big Baddie is here! What should I do?"
He sees and enemy. He cuts an enemy in half.
And most importantly: he goes for the head.

Not to mention every trait you mentioned for Thanos, Ultron is infinite of that since he is literally created from the fucking mind stone. Vision has a hard time using it because he is not created from the mind stone so therefore he doesn't have a pure connection to it. So unlike Vision, Ultron can shoot larger, more powerful concentrated beams without struggling or making weird faces that Vision does when he shoots his beams, because it is his to use alone as a sentient being created from that source of power. You think Ultron built that body in Age of Ultron so that some enemy can just take control or use it easily? Its too complex, not even Vision understands the stone itself and even stated this in Civil War.
Also Thanos at the end of the day is an organic being that is limited by emotions and has to use a gauntlet made out of Uru to take the strain of the infinity stones, unlike Ultron who doesn't need anything at all since, once again, hes made from the primary infinity stone (the mind stone).

Push a "soft" material with a sharpened point into a "harder" material, and the tip will go blunt because the soft material deforms. This is why diamond powder is often used to coat grinding wheels etc - the diamond has very high hardness and doesn't go blunt under normal circumstances. Of course it is just carbon, and when heated sufficiently it will undergo chemical reactions - so even with diamond you have to watch the cutting speed to prevent the tip from getting too hot and going blunt.

I only have one theory why Thanos got killed so easily and that is, when he entered earth and saw the destruction of everything, it made him confused raising question through his thoughts and that may have caught him off guard and unprepared for what was going to happen. Unexpectedly, he came alone without and army in his back or even his elites, he wasn't even wearing his armor, meaning he was just going to scout earth, and may have just prepared some small script to play out for whose ever he will encounter. He was prepared to make war with earth but he was overly confident and was took by surprised for that glimpse of second where his confusion mixed up with the thoughts of a full invasion, meaning he had a plan but he stuttered for a glimpse of second, unlike Ultron, he was curious but he was still on his guard and still have the mission in his system to eliminate life that could threaten peace, and it only took him milliseconds to process all that....

Faster the mind, the better the stones work. Since “UltraVision” is the most advanced AI on Earth and augmented with the Mind Stone, it’s not a stretch to believe that he can compute and analyze a situation damn near infinitely faster than practically any organic being and remedy the situation. Plus Thanos seemed to be basking in his own glow as he feels he’s about to secure ultimate victory. Which gives UltraVision more than enough time to kill him. I interpreted it as a few things going on but the part that made me believe it is that Ultron is not Vision. While in that scene he might look like vision and even have the same physical capabilities, they don't approach situations the same way. As opposed to the noble and philosophical manner in which vision exists, Ultron doesn't give a damn. Within a brief moment of seeing Thanos, Ultron does two simple things, at what I imagine was lightning speed. Observe this being is from another world. Check. Observe this being has objects quite similar to the Mind Stone. Check. Then he kills him without a second though. Doesn't even bother to wonder who that is or what he wants. He doesn't question why Thanos has come because it is irrelevant. Ultron mentally ticked to check boxes about observing a life form and then just killed him.

I think it's Thanos' overconfidence and simple reaction time walking through the portal that led to his death. Ultron's instant reaction was just like a computer while Thanos' was like any other biological entity: He has to process the situation and react. Ultron analyzed the situation and provided a solution the way an advanced machine would. To survive, Thanos would have had to walk through the portal with his most powerful defense up ahead of time.

  • @Mick116
    @Mick116 3 года назад +83

It's simple. By this stage, Thanos had ditched his armour and gone into "spiritual" mode. In this universe, Asgard and the sorcerers have been defeated, as the time and space stones were already in Thanos' possession, Odin is most likely dead as in the standard MCU universe, Hela had probably succumbed to Surtur and Ragnarok, and Thanos wasn't anticipating any significant resistance.
Ultron killed Thanos in exactly same way Thor would have killed him in the main MCU if he'd "gone for the head". Just as Thanos in his arrogance wasn't prepared for Stormbreaker, so too was he ill prepared for a genocidal android with the mind stone. Ultron, without a score to settle, went straight for the kill shot. MCU Vision was too wrapped up in preventing violence and avoiding the fight, that he didn't even consider he'd have the power to kill Thanos outright. Vision was simply too slow on the draw.

Seems simple. Ultron was quick on the draw. He saw a threat, he killed the threat. Thanos was slow to react and probably figured he couldn't be killed easily. My theory (this theory is valid because it's one of infinite possible outcomes) is that after knowing that Earth is now in ruins, Thanos wanted to either make Ultron an underling or completely crush him to complete his rainbow rock collection. And he was so confident of his 5 stones over Ultron's one single stone that he just forgot to check the time stone if he would even fail. The moment Ultron saw Thanos and the 5 stones, his super-duper-giga fast AI had already done the calculation of what action to make, and the ruthless machine just did what he did with no hesitation. Thanos' skin is even tougher than the Hulk's, so, to me it would require even more power than a single stone to dispatch The Mad Titan like that. Vision was damaged by attacking Thanos hedgemen Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight, so, I'll chalk that up as the reason he wasn't able to easily destroy them like Ultron did to Thanos. But I think that with Thanos not being human and such a powerful immortal alien being (An Eternal) with all 5 stones at his disposal, that he should have been able to put up some kind of defense against the sneak attack from Ultron. It just makes almost no sense to me that he was destroyed so quickly.

Even with it, we see him get beat up by Ultron who knows Vision is naive since he overpowered him while they were only software with no physical bodies. He was aware the stone amplified Wanda’s powers and how to use the stone to overpower the others… unlike Vision who was shooting deflected beams at Corvinus and Thanos. With Asgard fully in tact, and Helena in charge, Thanos has to do a lot more than simply intercept a ship of exhausted refugees, I don't even think he would have the means to get to Asgard. If the Avengers and everyone on earth dies to Ultron then he would be possesion of the time stone. Lastly, if Thor doesn't meet up with the GOTG then no one tells them about thanos's plan so they don't run in to him on knowhere, Gamora doesn't get taken to show him where the soul stone is. Thanos should only have the reality stone and power stone. Ultron should have the time and mind stone. • @RetroSho
      @RetroSho 3 года назад

@Dan It totally makes sense to me. You're thinking from the angle that Thanos is all powerful in all realities in the multiverse, which simply cannot be true. We just watched multiple episodes where one thing changes in an alternate reality and everything goes in completely different directions from what we know in the main MCU. In this reality Thanos appeared much like he did in the MCU -- he was about to monologue and grandstand to the being who had the final Infinity gem (Ultron), separating him from his objective. They might have had a back and forth with words before fighting. Ultron did not allow this to happen at all, he immediately identified him as a threat then eliminated him. (This also means there are realities where Ultron may have tried and failed to kill Thanos at that moment too).
I think you really want Thanos to always win i(in any reality) when it should be obvious that there has to be realities where he fails despite having multiple (or all) Infinity Gems. I will agree however -- having a multiverse allows for writers to be somewhat inconsistent and explain away things that should be set in stone. That's why I had my "Short Answer". 🤣

@Dan You're completely discounting the "human element" and flaws that come with it. Someone who has a lot of power can be arrogant for a brief moment in time. You can make your argument on how Ultron didn't just zap away all of his enemies after he got all the stones, but him instantly killing Thanos makes sense to me.

@Dan The episode doesn't run long enough to explain such things. However, even this can be explained away by "Multiverse, lol". They literally say it's a space of "infinite possibilities" does it not? Why can't there be a universe where only Black Widow & Hawkeye survive on Earth? It fits the bill. Why can't there be a reality where Ultron kills Thanos instantly upon meeting? It fits the bill. It's part of those "infinite possibilities", which expand as far as the mind can conceive (and beyond).
I'm not dodging, I'm trying to get you to see that the entire multiverse thing is a very convenient way to explain away some of the writing. You might get more pleasure from not taking these as seriously, but I'm betting you won't.

One of the main gimmicks in Infinity war was that Thanos, a finite being wielding near infinite power, needed to close his fist to activate the stones. Ultron in this universe is upgraded to the Vision’s body who’s powers activate instantaneously at a thought. This What If seemed totally reasonable to me for this reason. Also, it made sense because Infinite War went to such lengths to ensure that Vision was out of the field of play because Vision wielding an infinity stone is OP.
The 6 infinity stones are equally powerful in their “realm” of power. The mind stone embedded in a vibranium android body would be able to “think faster” and apply infinite power in a finite direction faster than Thanos. To me, I think Ultron smokes “prophet Thanos” every time. Warlord Thanos, who actually did homework on enemies before just waltzing into and out of conflict, would have been far more likely to defeat Ultron.

Eliminating those tels is the hardest process and arguably impossible to remove every tel. In every marvel movie I've seen, nearly every attack thrown by everyone has a tel. Thanos always has some momentary warning. Because of the location of the mind stone on Ultron's head and the nature of being a machine, there were no tels for Thanos. The director's response to this moment in What If is the perfect example of the beauty of possibilities and probability and that's why I love the What If series. Well each "What If...?" would also have an infinite amount of other universes splintering off from each other. Due to the nature of infinity, there are infinity amounts of universes where Ultron lost to Thanos AND infinity amounts of universes where he killed him like he did here.
Of course this is all mind-boggling and defeats the purpose of narrative storytelling - since it implies that there are infinity amounts of the characters and makes it all pointless. The Watcher could have hired infinity amounts of "Party Thors", for example, all functionally identical yet all from a slightly unique universe. There are infinity amounts of Doctor Strange Supremes or even IG Thanosii that he could have plucked from any point in time.

On the stones working in multiple Universes, once again. Of course. This was shown in Dr. Strange and explained in Endgame, some just didn’t get it.
_We go back in time to get the stones….Thanos doesn’t have the stones, problem solved._ - Scott
    _Nope._ - Professor Hulk.
The Avengers can’t travel back in time to get the stones from the past.
So they travel to alternate universes instead.
The stones Professor Hulk uses are from alternate Universes - he uses them in the “sacred” timeline or main Universe.
Any attempt to understand this as all happening with stones from the same Universe goes right back to what Scott said.
if that were true then the moment you get any stone from the past and bring it to the future- the problem is solved because Thanos never got all the stones, so he never snapped.
[this is the classic single-timeline-time-travel paradox]
So the stones already came from different Universes and were used in the same Universe.
And that is the *one thing* that What if got right. [lots else is wrong]
In episode 9 you see Ultron use his time stone and then Dr. Strange fight back with his. Two stones - two different Universes - both working in the same Universe.
The stones work in every Universe. Always did - in the MCU>

So when Professor Hulk was trying to get the time machine to work and brought back a young Scott then an Elder Scott, these were from alternate timelines?
And when Professor Hulk went to the ancient one to get the time stone and she said that He cane 5 years early and Dr. Strange is a few blocks away from the sanctum operating in the hospital, was this an alternate timeline?
Was Thanos that they fought in Endgame from an alternate timeline?
The avengers got the stones from their main timeline, just an earlier point in time, and if they didn't bring them back to their point in time after the final battle, then the earlier point will become a new alternate timeline in which Thanos will lose (as he won't be able to collect the 6 stones, thus the past becomes the new future as said by Professor Hulk to WarMachine) and the TVA will erase that new alternate timeline.
Remember the events of endgame happened before the break of the sacred timeline into multiple timelines, before the death of Kang.
Main timeline Kang is the one who erased all the alternate timelines when He utilized Alioth to defeat his different versions and made these different timelines into a single one so there are no alternate timelines during the events of endgame as these events happened before Kang's death and the events of What if...! happened after his death.
