Amazing, you have 70 comments & everyone has a different opinion. I think the problem is with all the machines. Sometimes you get a bit of a lemon, not a full lemon that you would return but, the machine is off somewhere. I have a few dies like that & stamps that are flawed, but after trying everything thinking I’m doing something wrong, I discover its the product, not me. I think for 2023 I’m just not going buy things I can’t return. Great video, great comments. Thank you.

I can relate, I make sure to test my dies, punches and stamps right when I get them. I learned this lesson after I used a die from a nestibility set that I got maybe a decade ago and is no longer made by Spellbinders and found that it had a manufacturing defect.
Since I started checking my purchases, I've caught a few defective products and gotten replacements during the return/warranty period.

Never ever liked my Sizziz Big Shot. Sold it a few years ago. I have had an original CuttleBug for 20 years and it still cuts basic Dies😀 Have a Gemini it cuts but oh! those blooming PLATES!! I now use a Self Healing plate as the cutting Plate. My choice, Yes! my fault if I cause a problem but at least it works for me. Use my Platinum the most, just wish it was Electric.
Thank you for another great Tools Video.

Big shot pro for me. A lot of money but the best I’ve ever had. I’ve had all the ones reviewed, the Fisk are fuse etc etc..they all broke and warped plates. I’m absolutely delighted with mine. Yes it’s big, yes it’s heavy but I have a designated place in my craft room and don’t have to move it. Unlike all the others the plates are fantastic and not warping after over a year of daily use. As you say, it’s personal preference.

Hello Ann, I have a big shot, a big shot plus and a switch machine, I would not trade my big shot plus for anything, it has never given me any problems and it cuts intricate dies each and every time, I do have a precision base plate which I bought when I bought my regular big shot but was advised not to use it with the plus machine so thankfully I don’t need it. I have used my switch many many times and so far so good, no problem cutting intricate dies with the precision base plate. My switch is pretty new but my regular big shot and my plus are 9 years old and I use my plus everyday and my sister loves my regular big shot 2-3 times a week with no problems. But thanks for the info. Watch Scrapbooking Made Simple you tubes Stacy has many many you tubes on the big shot and a couple on the switch machine, she is very knowledgeable and I have learned a lot from her. Good luck.

Have you learned things (from Stacey at scrapbook made simple) that uses the machine configuration in a different way, that makes your switch work better ? Or your big shot? Or keep your plates from warping ?
I do find using a dryer sheet on some intricate dies helps pieces pop out easier, flick of the paper easier. I also have had good results using the magic mat. But got same results from the cutting mat sold at dollar tree & cut down to fit inside my die machine (cuttlebug)

    • @deeterra6339
      @deeterra6339 Год назад +2

@@denaheck1506 yes I have learned a lot from Stacey, she has a lot of tips that has helped me, one thing that helps my plates is to flip the cutting plate each time you use them to keep them from warping, also cutting plates aren’t designed to last forever, I have only bought 2 sets of plates in the last 9 years and I don’t think that’s to bad. To help get things out of the paper out of the dies I use press and seal ( thanks to stampin up demonstrator Connie Stewart). As far as configurations I’m not sure what you mean but Stacey does do various things to use the switch machine do things it is designed to do.

Hi Ann, thank you for this honest review of your machines. I owned a Big Shot, than a Vagabond (which gave out on me after six months), than a Craftwell ebosser for a very long time. I than pre-ordered the Big Shot Switch in 2020 and, thanks to the pandemic, had to wait for it for a year and a half. But I love, love, love this machine. It is unfortunate that you have this experience but I actually almost struggle with it having too much pressure. It cuts all of my intricate dies beautifully, some I let through twice, most are done with one run through. I do not need the chrome precision plate. What is also nice is the fact that I can use the platforms and plates from the original Big Shot (for smaller dies) and from the Big Shot Plus. I have some really big dies where I need the Big Shot Plus platform and plates. I never intended to move it around so it is not an issue for me that it is heavier than other machines. I certainly do not intend to sway you to love the Switch but for others who, like me, appreciate your opinion, I just wanted to chime in that my experience with it is very different. Best from Germany.

@@longlivedemocracy756 Thank you for the feedback. I truly believe every machine is different and many of us give up too easily when the first tries do not work as expected. I have learned so much about pressure, shims and angles in the past few years. Tim Holtz had some eye opening advice about warping plates. Always put larger dies, and embossing folders for that matter, as much on an angle on the platform as possible. It does make a huge difference and helps with less warping. When pressure is not to your liking use cardstock as a shim in those areas that need more pressure. As mentioned all my intricate dies cut like butter without the precision plate. But maybe you would have to use it if your machine is different. Hope you find the one that works for you.

Very informative and appreciated review Ann. Over the years, I have purchased quite a few machines and have always gone back to my Big Shot. However, the warping (as with many people), drives me crazy. And even with the chrome precision plate, there are still times when the dies do not completely cut. 2 clear plates is for regular 3D folders, like the ones Crafters Companion produce themselves. If you have the thick sizzix Textured Impressions folders, which seem to be the thickest made, then it is just one cutting plate, and the folder with the media in. I also put a card shim on top of the folder to stop it slipping, and make some sort of interface between the folder and the rollers.

  • @longlivedemocracy756

I guess like so many other crafters who have been doing this for years, I have owned many machines. I started with a different company (not Sizzix) with my first several machines and they each broke. It took me a bit to give up on that company. But I finally bought a Big Shot and it really has lasted me forever. The only reason I bought a second one was to spoil myself, and have a machine for friends/family to use when crafting together. It doesn’t disappoint. But now after watching your video, I believe you have saved me from major disappointment buying the electric machine version. I was going to treat myself at Christmas, but opted to get a hot foil machine instead. Now I’m so glad I watched your video because I will probably get the fold -a-way next time. You have me looking forward to it now. I really didn’t know I needed it. 😊 Right now I’m on a self imposed craft purchasing diet. As someone else mentioned I have enough stuff for two lifetimes of crafting! Only buying necessities in the coming months (adhesive). But I may get it as my birthday gift to me in the summer. The Gemini always cuts perfectly every time. The plastic plates are a problem. I went to a glass shop and had them cut 4 pieces of lucite to the correct size. Much cheaper at about $6.00 CDN per plate. I also don’t use the Gemini sandwich as I think that is too tight and contributes to warping. I use three clear plates to cut and it works every time.
I have the Spellbinders Platinum six also. It is also a solid machine. Better for embossing than the Gemini.

This has been really informative. I have had my Big Shot for years and have been happy with it. I have to agree with you regarding the price of certain things and then they expect you to buy extras to be able to cut certain things. That is obviously deliberate to have us spend more on their products. It is a red flag to me straight away, I hate greed. The Big Shot seems to have doubled in price since I got mine about 4 years ago, it's shocking. 😲Until watching this, it never occurred to me to blame the machine for not cutting something properly, I always blame the die LOL. Thanks for doing this it's been great and maybe one day, I will get a foldaway 😊

On my Gemini jr, I use my small Spellbinders white plate , then paper, then die, then the metal Gemini Jr plate, then the Gemini Jr clear plate. The older spellbinders plates do not warp no other companies use this type of plate because you never have to replace them. This sandwich cuts all my intricate die first time, it never warps, it’s great. But I do not have good results with 3D folders on this machine, so I use a different machine for them. So if you can find the Spellbinders small plates they usually come in a set, white , grey and red berry, they work wonderful on Gemini Jr, I bought a back up set 2 years ago and have never opened them yet.

My brother bought me the Sizzix xpress. I used it a few times and suddenly it wouldn’t accept the bigz die to cut 4 layers of fabric. It made a groaning sound. It just wouldn’t work again and because the warranty had run out I could not return it. I was told that there weren’t spare parts for this machine anyway. I opened it because I had nothing to lose and found that the gears were frozen solid! Sewing machine oil wouldn’t work either. I guess I got a dud. I do like my Sizzix big shot, the manual model for fabric but, having said that, sometimes I find the fiddling is not worth it. I watched this with interest. I bought my Platinum 6 when it first came out and I quickly discovered you have to place your plates very carefully else they won’t go through and yours seemed to be placed slightly to one side which may have been why you had the sort of trouble I had when I first used mine (and still sometimes do if I am not careful). I recently put a 3D embossing folder through the platinum with the blue plate with no problems but had to ensure the plates were very centrally spaced. I replaced my much loved Cut'n'Boss recently with a Big Shot Plus having discarded the idea of a Switch having read some negative reviews akin to yours. I found that intricate dies had to go through a few times. I read that I wouldn’t need the precision base plate yet as my machine was new but I am not so sure about that. The advantage of the plus machine is the ability to easily turn plates ninety degrees (assuming the use of the smaller plates which I have now bought) so this might help me …….time will tell.
I have only just found your channel and have subscribed as I have found some very useful ideas and so expect to find more. Many thanks for the work you do. Now to go back through all the older videos.

Set the plate in the hot water for a few minutes and when you take it out set it on a towel and then quickly set a large pot with water in it on top and allow to cool and your plate should be straight.

I have a Spellbinders Grand Calibur A4, for bigger dies. When I have intricate dies I turn them up side down and have the cutting side up and that usually helps to get it cut through perfect. I always turn my plates around and use the hole area to cut on and that helps warping. Thank you so much for a good review of different machines. 😄

Hi Ann, thank you for doing these reviews. I don't have a precision plate, but sometimes have to put dies through a couple of times or even add some paper shims where needed
I've just had a count up & realise that I have 6 different machines in the house at present. My original was the 1st Turquoise Big Shot & that was the only one I had for many years until it died on me, even my Son in Law couldn't fix it. Then a few years ago I ended up with the Original Red heavy based hand cracked Sizxix but passed that on to a friend who still used them. In the same bundle of Craft items was also a Black & Pink Big Shot, the Raspberry Grand Calibre, & the Craft Bag on wheels, which is what I actually wanted (it also came with whatever they could put in it)
I now have my Big Shot in my bedroom (for when I'm stuck in bed). I have a Gemini Original electric machine, which is still in the box as I can't get into my craft room yet. A Gemini Mini (not sure about the folder system but is ideal for tiny dies) I also have the electric Couture Creation Go Press & Emboss along with the Go Press & Foil machines (New) Both in the to sell pile as I've now got the Gemini Foil machine which seems to me to be easier to use & time, (& it was a ridiculous price for both 😂) I'm still trying to persuade my Youngest Daughter to re home it, but she's looking towards getting a Cricut as she could do more towards the fundraising for her partner's Cricket & Darts teams he's in. I also have a mini machine from Aldi that I take to my local craft group for them to use when I do a session on card making, It might have just been cheap, but it seems to be a robust little machine.
So sorry I've waffled on 🥴 xx

I had the Gemini Jr and hated it. I have both sizes of the Empress and I love it. It is fabulous. The plates do not warp like the Gemini. I also have the switch for my older bigs dies and I do have the precision base plate and I have had no issues with it. I also have the platinum six from Spellbinders that I use for embossing folders. Ialso have the big shot plus and I really like that one too. I use the Empress almost every day. It is a great machine!

The gemini was wonderful until it wasn't... I ended up trashing it. My plates cracked so violently it sent shards all around. Contacted Gemini and was told I over used the plates. Yeah, that was the end for me. I love my sizzix. I have owned them for years. My favorite one is the foldaway. I use my vagabond for heavy duty projects or projects where I will be making multiples. My next investment is the sizzix pro. But for me I think I will stick to sizzix, except the mini sizzix, that one ate my die and I had to take it apart to get my die back... lol. Thanks for the honest review.

I'm in the UK and I got a great response from CC customer Service, who repaired a machine for me and sent me a new set of plates back with it, which was very good. The old clear cutting plates were not really up to the job, but the new white plastic ones that came out with the Gemini II seem to be way better, and none of my white boards have even started to bow, despite my heavy use. I use my Gemini junior for work only, and use a custom sandwich with a very high pressure, and the boards are standing up very well. I used to try and flatten the old ones in hot water, but found they too snapped after a couple of goes through the machine, which was a bit of a shock.

A great review Ann. I have a regular Gemini and can't stand it. I have a Vagabond. I am tired of the warping. I got rid of my spellbinders (older version) I could not crank it. I use the FoldAway and that is the best machine. Thanks for your video. The Scrapbook Magic Mat has saved me tons of money. I do have to shim with several pieces of paper, but I have cut way done on plate expense. The Magic Mat does wear out eventually. It is not a forever tool.

I used to have trouble with intricate dies fully cutting out on the Big Shot until I put the die face up with the paper on top. Roll it through and voila. The rollers are able to put more pressure on the die this way. Maybe it would work on the electric Big Shot Switich?

Happy New Year Ann! I'm still using my Cuttlebug that I bought 12 years ago. 🤣 Back then, they cost $40 USD and I have had no problems with it. I can use Bigz dies and wafer dies and embossing folders are no problem. But they discontinued making them several years ago. I thought I'd better have a backup for when my Cuttlebug kicks the bucket, so bought a regular Big Shot two years ago on sale for $89 USD. Craft prices had definitely gone up since my first purchase. 😊 The Big Shot is still sitting in the box waiting for the demise of the Cuttlebug, so I can't really justify buying another machine. But I have heard great reviews about both the Foldaway and the Platinum 6 and really prefer the smaller footprint. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. This was a very thorough review! Thank you for taking time to compare all of these! Janet ❤

Thanks for this great review! It's always helpful to know others honest opinions and experiences. Sorry for this long comment, but here's some of my experiences with die cutting machines if anyone might be interested.
My very first die cutting machine was the Sizzix Sidekick. But it could only cut small dies. I then got a Sizzix Vagabond that lasted for about 6 years until something broke in the motor and it wouldn't pull the sandwich through. I think I tried to put too many thick things through that ceased up the motor...that I was then, after about 5 min able to back the sandwich out, but over time, I think that weakened the mechanics or motor. But it was a great machine and built very well. Then I got the WRMK Evolution that had an adjustable pressure knob. That was kind of helpful, but sometimes not and the instructions that came with it were limited. WRMK discontinued that one and have a new one they brought out a few years ago, I think...can't recall the model name now. So I then decided to get a basic Big Shot and it cuts most everything I need virtually flawlessly. But yes, the warping plates are a pain. But I've also seen a popular method of putting them in very hot water to straighten them back out when the warping gets really bad. People say it works great, but I haven't tried it yet. I have thought I would get a Sizzix Switch bc it would be easier on my hands and wrist, but I don't even do so much die cutting anymore, so I think I'm just gonna stick with what I have for now. One way or another I will likely stick with Sizzix as I think they're the most well-built, consistent and reliable in their die cutting machines in spite of some things I'm not crazy about. 👍😊

The precision base plate is a game changer if you are having issues cutting dies, from memory it was not to pricey I got mine for £14:99 ! I chose to get the chrome one which doesn’t scratch, so it should always look new. Everything cuts so well with it but you can not use it with a big shot plus machine as apparently the pressure is different on the rollers. I hate to admit that I to have multiple die cutting machines but I do suggest before giving up on your big shot try the precision base plate as it solves problems 👍🏼😊! I am really enjoying the run through test of your machines as it is very helpful to see how they are handling to cut the die. I remember trying to hand finish my dies over & over again but it very quickly gets old as it takes ages & they are often only partially cut but when you can cut dies easily & perfectly it is such a relief & just more fun 😁. Thanks 👍🏼

Hated the Gemini Jr because of the extreme warping of the plates until I discovered Jennifer McGuires solution taping and using the double sided cutting plates, also this machine is very loud! I purchased the Switch as I still wanted to have a machine that I could use my many Bigz Dies but I haven’t used it as much. My favorite is the Anna Griffin Mini Empress, eventually I will purchase the larger Empress! The mini Empress is a workhouse, is compact, easy to move, weighs less than 6 pounds, quiet running, especially compared to the Gemini and it cuts beautifully without the plates warping (I do follow flipping and turning for each pass through and only cut into one plate at a time) In my opinion the Anna Griffin Empress far surpasses the Gemini

I regret selling my large Big Shot and Gemini which was due to space at the time (now moved craft room and have the space for them 😳) I bought a Foldaway and it was the most awkward die cutting machine! Because it sits on the central part and has no support on the desk either side it’s not sturdy enough so I sold it. The Gemini is an excellent machine and a lot of problems are caused by people putting too thick a sandwich for their machine. I could never use the magnetic mat as it was too many layers - for my machine! I continued using my plates for months and months, probably a couple of years and they worked well. I currently have a Spellbinders Platinum 6 which ( my friend and myself have both found) is a pain to try and get good 3d folder results but cuts well. The handle doesn’t need to stay up as it’s only to move it. You definitely wouldn’t want to hold it while die cutting because it’s a sturdy machine so it’s good it drops out of the way. For me out of all the machines the Big Shot is the easiest to use and the Foldaway the worst - not stable enough and keep pulling out and sliding back in the “shelves” was a pain as they have to be in just the right place. I like that with the larger machines you can angle frame dies etc as they’re better put through that way rather than struggle to try and push the full flat edge through in one go. All machines vary a little so what one person uses as a sandwich might not work the same for someone else so I’d always say try a cautious cut first then add in shims. It’s personal choice
