    What are your thoughts on Gareth Edwards' THE CREATOR?

    • @VonJay
      @VonJay Год назад +1

      I think he’s one of the best and most convincing visual directors, and like Rogue One, he needs to be paired with a competent writer. When Gilroy stepped in, he said that rogue one was missing a theme and didn’t want to change it too much so he looked for instances in the story that he could connect and build upon. And that was “sacrifice.” I could also tell that Darth Vader’s final scene in rogue one wasn’t Gilroy’s idea while watching it. Though I thought it was awesome it didn’t really fit the movie thematically besides passing the torch directly off to anh. When I like it up, I was right, Edward added the scene almost at the last minute. I’m glad it exists it just felt like there were two different writers with two different perspectives on that part of rogue one.
      I think a good to great thematic writer, someone who knows why literary devices like “emotional wounds” need to exist to create traction in a movie as well as the devices that immediately follow would be a great counterpart to Edwards.

      I have seen the movie 3 times in the theatre. The first time I was blown away by how well made the movie was. I was not expecting that. The second time (don't ask, I have had multiple online dates) I began to see some of the flaws in the story. The third time, I actually hated the movie. I began to see it for what it was. A manipulation of the audience to accept things that are not good. Kind of like a trojan horse that sneaks into your consciousness, making you believe that you saw one thing, while actually being something different. For example, what is the moral of the story? The movie begins with a scene showing Los Angeles after a nuclear strike. It's made known to us that A.I. is responsible for it. Which makes sense. In real life, A.I. is dangerous because of its potential use by enemy nations. And in real life, I am wary of the current push to introduce A.I. into all facets of society. But as the story progresses, you begin to see that the movie is trying to manipulate you into thinking that A.I. is really not bad. One of the characters in the movie even yells in Chinese "A.I. is the next evolution. You cannot stop it". The fact that the movie takes place in an Asian country that looks like China or Vietnam, establishes that this battle is between the USA and China. Obviously the filmmaker had to be careful not to show it is China because of political reasons. Then the movie begins to portray the "white" people are being bad. While the darker, more ethnic people are good. Nomad represents USA's military might. So basically the story of the film is about a new weapon that is being produced that can disable USA's strongest military weapons. Of course, they dress the weapon as a child, so that you actually feel sympathy for it. Of course they make the "protagonist" of the film, the only black man (once again trying to manipulate the audience to support him. Even though he is being a traitor in the movie.) And of course, they further obfuscate what is happening by showing that the black man is doing it out of "love" for his deceased wife. The movie ends with basically the Asian people celebrating the fact that they were able to defeat the Americans. Even though the Americans had every right to fear another nuclear attack, the movie tried to make you "feel" that the Americans were evil for trying to destroy a little "child". Even though it's just a machine made to look like a child. But in reality it's basically a EMP. Maybe if the film would have been more nuanced, then it would have been a better film. But it was basically "America is evil white colonizer. Asians are poor victims." In real life, A.I. robots would be used by countries for their military to destroy the enemy. But the robots in the movie try to pretend they will not harm humans. Even though in the movie finale, we see that the protagonist caused the death of innocent soldiers who were about the Nomad ship.

    The film itself is visually stunning, and I appreciate what he was trying to do. I feel like the movie could have been longer, and have fleshed out the motivation and the writing. I wanna see more of the world that they inhabit. If it were me, I would have gone more into the darker aspects of the world. I agree with alot of your points, but the one thing that I can say for sure. Is that Gareth Edwards knows how to show a story, scale. He just took too many of the same beats as other sci-fi films.

      @@robertdouble559 I'm not talking about budget -- I don't think the filmmakers set out to make Blade Runner. I watched a sci Fi film called Prospect that had an even smaller scope and budget, but was a much better movie. It stayed grounded and close to the characters. Movie deserves to have an extended cut released. I sense that too much was cut in effort to keep the pacing going. The movie had enough action, it could have done with some slower bits throughout to flesh out some of the relationships between characters (especially between Joshua and Alphie, and really more between Joshua and the AIs in general). That being said I still loved it nonetheless, and I feel it will resonate with me for a long time. Only a small handful of other movies have managed to make me tear up (off the top of my head Blood Diamond, Last Samurai, Tears of the Sun). The latter half of the movie especially felt a bit rushed in a few parts. The whole setting (regarding the geopolitical landscape) and certain very important plot points (like the claim that a coding error caused the nuke, and the resulting war that ensued) could have been delved into more. The film could have easily afforded an additional 30-40 min in running time without feeling like it was being slowed down too much. And regarding the score, I have to say it did its just just fine. No it was perhaps not as memorable with repeating hooks/motifs playing throughout, but this actually worked better. This score was much more subdued overall, accompanying the visuals without ever overstepping its boundaries and distracting from what was going on on-screen. The score accompanied the scenes rather than the other way around. Yes some tropes and themes of the story may have been familiar and reused, but the overall package felt very unique to me. I hope to see more films like this in the future, and I very much hope Edwards revisits this in the future to perhaps reinsert some of what was removed.

    This movie could've been great, but I agree it's faulty. Needed more time in the oven. Too much about the plot, pacing, dialogue and tone isn't good. I remember seeing this and wanting to see it in theaters but I couldn't, instead, I got it on apple TV and watched while I sick. I do really love how the world is presented and how lived in it looks, and after watching several sci-fi films that were just exhausting to look at(looking at you Marvel) this was a huge breath of fresh air and I loved the almost organic feel of how the robots are part of the enviroment and crowds. Story was serviceable, nothing I would really complain when it comes to it, 4/5 for me.

    I think Chris stuck man made a good point to the movie. To produce this film, where separate IP and non original inspiration is the norm, the film had to be tropey and relatable so the higher ups can give it the go ahead. Hence why it needed to be ‘safe’
    Although it’s an unfortunate take, I think the film, story, and world building can be built on head canon to fill in the gaps

    I clicked on this video a few days ago.. but closed it after a few seconds, because i hadn’t seen the movie, yet.
    well..
    Now.. that i have watched the movie, i would say that i tend to agree with you.
    The story is good, not brilliant… but the screenplay falls short. I would say that it is also the Director’s task to assure he/she’s got good character exploration.. I wonder if Edwards’ movie was ‘disturbed’ by industry-execs .. because it deserved more time to develop its mythology, instead of dabbling with some in-between-scenes that contribute very little to its tone and pathos.
    What i saw here was that, although it is visually stunning, given the budget (80M?!! jeeeezz ) and its scale , i ended up not caring for the characters as deeply as i would’ve needed to. You mention The Edge of Tomorrow were the passing of the ball between the 2 main characters (and brilliant actors!) is fundamental to the movie.
    Having said this… on Rogue One, for eg., it is not so dynamic, as the movie’s pace is different, but, it still works.
    One gets the back & forth between the 2 main characters, and even though you already knew they would die, you still enjoyed their relationship and camaraderie.
    On The Creator.. i almost wished they both died as well…. as (also agreeing with you) it sort of lacks the courage to not-being overly safe.
    The warfare sequences are very good.. and you truly get a sense of scale.
    But, where Star Wars shines _ a tight small team of Resistance fighters imploding an Empire by infiltrating enemy lines_ this one fails to deliver_ Joshua is too much of an anti-hero, in between the two polar opposites of the war.
    He gathers little gravitas ..in his character-arc , and he gathers no team gravitas, as he projects too much of the lone-wolf figure, meeting a bunch of ppl, but establishing no bonds with any other characters. In fact, it is his buddy who ‘sells-out’ and ends up with an A.I. as his romantic partner.
    The Joshua-Alphie bond was already made. No need to reinforce it with incoming sub-plot from external characters.
    What we actually needed was a reluctant Joshua to try and win a few anti-AI agents.. to the otherside. There’s no philosophical dialectical altercation, between him and Allison Jeanney’s character, in the end.. either.. as Joshua stands for nothing, too much, outside the immediate survival of the kid, as a means to get to Maya. His wife’s character is aptly named i should say.. but the world’s veil of illusion it represents, is but a thin metaphor.
    His relationship-arc with Alphie is not deep enough to strike me, empathetically.
    The Direction in Cinematography has its flaws too. Nomad’s penetration on ppl’s sense of remote privacy, is not well explored. It’s always approached in the ‘3rd person’ . Something as ubiquitous and terrorizing as Nomad should’ve been truly captured in the 1st person. Again, because we rarely have a perception of the world oustide Joshua’s POV, and he is sort of indifferent to Nomad and the USA’s plight against AI, one does not not feel the world truly in the Eurasian POV.
    All of this is the Director’s job, imo.
    In the end.. i was a good effort, i still had fun watching it, and it provoked a few cool thoughts, in me.
    but it’s sort of bittersweet, as one feels it could’ve been much more.

    Let's not blow things out of its proportion. The story wasn't bad, it just was not original, which is not a bad thing per se if you manage to tell it in a way that feels organic which is the case. It's the old mythological story of the reluctant father figure who embarks on a road trip/mission with a child prodigy who he needs to protect (mandalorian, last of us, etc).
    It's been done and overused but I was surprise how organic it felt moving from set piece to set piece. Compare this with the MCU where they come up with the most unbelievable plot points to move from point A to point B. The movie is great. It's not a masterpiece but it is a good blockbuster sci-fi movie.

      I think it was 100% a bad story AND an unoriginal, but I still enjoyed the movie. Here are some reasons why it was a bad story in my opinion; the plot was sloppy, pacing all over the place, dialogue hard to follow, meaningful moments not given enough build-up, and meaningless moments given too much weight, too many useless flashbacks of frolicking on the beach, not enough exposition where it was needed and too much exposition where it could have been shown through story instead. Too many characters that were flat and given no screentime for growth, but for some reason were set up as if they did have development (probably victims of cut footage). I just came out of the theater so I can give specific examples if asked. This film needed more time in the oven, for sure. But I still had a fun time watching. Lot of wasted potential but it doesn't matter, just glad it was made.

    I thought the movie almost got there but it was good enough that I'd go see it again. The complaint that the sci-fi tropes were too "borrowed" didn't bother me because they weren't like memberberries of a lot of film easter eggs. A lot of the references were just a flavoring of several things, but having grown up seeing all the movies those came from made this movie feel familiar and allowed me to quickly adapt to the feeling of the world and better appreciate the cinematography. The parts that got me the most were actually;
    1. Favoring one side over another in the ending. I want movies to take that risk that everyone loses, wins or both. I felt it would have been a curious ending if those missiles had landed, but Alphy survived, and NOMAD was destroyed leaving a kind of ending that wasn't so set in stone.
    2. For the level of technology and infrastructure, they needed more realistic elements. How on earth did they invade New Asia that hard without being considered invaders? How was that not full-scale war? Why are there no surface to air missiles to strike NOMAD? Non transport aircraft? Cruise missiles? I honestly thought the station was firing rail shots, rods from god or an energy weapon, but just missiles. Those can be fired from such simpler means.
    If you suspend some belief and fit it to the setting, I think it all blends in just fine. To me the movie is mostly about the journey instead of the war, but I love war in movies. Such fun explosions.

Sure, to you it's a 10/10, and that's great, you're entitled to your views, but you can't expect others to feel the same.
      For example someone trying to convince me this is a 10/10 movie is an impossibility. I've seen way too many movies and read too many stories that have come before this with the exact same concepts in this film decades ago and executed it 100 times better. The Creator is like an upscaled popcorn Marvel version of those films but heavier on the action side and explosions. As a massive fan of Rogue One this was a disappointment. @@gerdaleta oh ofcourse man, its one of the most stunning movies ever! ..I got visual-orgasm from some scenes that are still stuck in my head. It scratched that Sci Fi visual fix that was missing in some movies such as Dune 2021. And it's still whole of a lot better than 95% of movies in the past decade. My only complaint is I felt like I'd seen this script before, in blade runner, I Robot, and especially rogue one, it was almost identical (even the ending). And so while it was a visual feast, it was lacking for me in the other department. But I'm very happy people are happy with this movie also because it will be a change in our Hollywood makes there movies. We need more movies like this to shift the trajectory Hollywood is in, even tho I I don't think it's 10/10,but glad others such as yourself enjoyed as much. I can totally respect it
