I would say one of my biggest mistakes was buying things just because they were a good/designer brand but are an older, not sought after style. For example, buying a ba&sh dress that’s been sitting in my closet for forever. It’s an older style and not in style anymore. Same thing with a “dress the population” dress. I would say “AVOID LABEL BLINDNESS!”
Mine isn't even brand specific, it's size specific. About 65% of my inventory that just won't sell, despite being good brands, are size XS. I used to say everyone needs clothes and pick up size XS / S indiscriminately in good brands. We have to remember and consider the fact that the average woman in the US is now a size 16, and picking up a ton of sizes XS and even S these days, isn't realistic.
Tbh I would have picked up that Eileen fisher for that price and just listed for around $25 and it would have probably sold quick. I know everybody has different business models but mine is move items fast. If I can triple my money I accept all offers. And even though I only have 430 items listed I sold almost 200 items last month. I always pick up Eileen in the bins but just price low if smaller size. Love your channel!! Thanks for the video!
I agree. I’m not a storage facility. If I give 83 cents for and item and I can make 10 $ or 15$ on it..I’m moving it and counting my money. Run of the mill basic pieces even if their a good brand don’t sell for a ton.. price they reasonable and move them…
I've only been reselling for a little over a year now and im still learning but trust me I've made so many mistakes not checking comps, overpaying, buying something for the brand but its not a desired style etc 🤦♀️. Watching resellers like yourself I've learned so much so thank you for all the tips and advice I've been doing so much better with my selections.
We've been doing this for years now, you will find that it will continue to happen. We get so frustrated because things will be super hot for enough time for us to feel confident in sourcing more, and then nothing sells. Out of nowhere, they will be hot again. It feels like you're being gaslit. 😂 Stay the course, trust your instincts, and try to learn something new every day. You'll be great!❤
That is one thing about reselling is keeping up with the coming & going clothing trends. Trying to sell something before it goes out of style or becomes over saturated!
I discovered a men's brand called AMIRI, by finding a cardigan in the women's sweaters. It had a leather tag, so I figured it was definitely worth a look up! Comps were insane for most of the items - t-shirts selling for over $100 - but there had never been any sweaters listed. The sweater retailed for $1700, so I picked it up and priced it at $375. Since that purchase I have, ironically, found a pair of men's embroidered and distressed skinny jeans that I have sold for $200, but the sweater is still sitting there after a year, with no action at all. Definitely an example of "not everything from a BOLO brand sells"!
This is a good, and vulnerable video. I appreciate it. The thing I've discovered over the years is, you should use the data, but there are definitely going to be times when everything looks good, but it just doesn't sell. You just shake your head. Especially with clothes and shoes, you are taking a gamble that the right person, who not only wants that style, but also has the right size, will see your product. We can only try. ❤
I’ve been selling a TON of NWT Talbots and J.Jill, especially in extended sizing. It even inspired me to try picking up a few non-new dresses from J.Jill at Goodwill. Both sold for $40 within a few weeks.
Hi Mogi...Your transparency is refreshing....an invaluable source real world knowledge...yes we learn from you..definitely...but also, we are learning with you...we share the same struggles...thanks for addressing these issues head on...without the fluff. ACCOUNTABILITY is the yard stick that distinguishes the entrepreneurs from the hobbyists😉 Thank you for putting it down and saying it loud...Thanks to Matt & Billy for sharing you with us..TIME is another critical element we often overlook...research is time consuming...Those of us with you for some time can see on your face baby #2 will be here very soon🎉 We are praying for no complications as the new family addition arrives!!! Peace & Love & continued success
Every single thrifted purchase (to resell), is gambling. There will be bad buys. I am a veteran/pioneer reseller…believe me, I know from experience, this is my main way of making money, since 2001. If I had all the money back from my bad buys/unsold items, I could probably retire😆
Great video and great reminders! I get lazy for sure on checking comps. Especially at estate sales. Then when I get home and look up the item on Posh, there are like 6 for sale in the same size. UGH.
With jeans I try the pockets depth with my hands. Men jeans have deep pockets, women’s jeans I can barely put my hands in the pockets. I’ve got small skinny hands
I sold a dress I had for 5 years. When I bought it, it was a Boden dress, small size, 100% linen, cute with yellow/white floral print. I thought it would sell for $30 or $35. I jumped at the offer for $15. I also bought identical J. Crew sweaters a few years ago except for the color. They were size XS, one was ivory and one was beige and listed at the same time. The ivory one sold in a few days for about $42, I still have the beige one. I like the advice of don't get stuck buying an item without checking how well that item does currently. Also quality doesn't translate to sales is so true. I have a few Lafayette 148 blazers in smaller sizes that I am still sitting on after a long time. Also some mystery quality items sitting unlisted because I don't have any information on them. Sometimes comps can be confusing, especially on poshmark. They don't say how long ago the item sold and identical items can sell for $20 or $90. Also be careful for flaws. I have bought dresses missing belts, shoes with no size printed, and other flaws that I should have caught if I was more careful and deliberate going though things at the store.
I made this mistake with an Athleta coat. It was $18, and some sold listings were around $100. I was SO EXCITED, so I didn't check it over as well as I should have. The binding on the cuffs was coming undone on BOTH sides. I might list it and disclose flaws to recoup my losses, but dang. That was a mistake. Now, I won't pick up anything above $10 unless I KNOW it will sell and sell well!
I have a White House Black Market dress that I listed when I started reselling (November 2023). I paid $12 for this and never knew how to or that I should check comps and sell through rate. I have only recently started doing this - trying to be more intentional when purchasing items. I realize now that I shouldn't pay up for things unless I am certain they will bring a big profit. I started with the mindset "ooh, lululemon! I must buy". "ooh, madewell! I must buy"! Needless to say, I have a lot more lulu and madewell (among other brands) that I have been sitting on! I appreciate your honesty; it often seems as if youtubers have these fantastic lucky streaks and magically find awesome, profitable items. It is helpful to know that you have some regrets and that you are still learning (and passing that knowledge on to us) - I hope that I will gain knowledge from watching videos like yours! BTW looking at that dress now, I realize it is so UGLY!! HA! :)
I don't get all the complaints about small sizing, I sell tons of XXS, XS sizes, it's highly brand and style specific. Also platform specific- I sell lots of these small sizes on depop and they have a younger buyerbase. Petites as well- petite sizes sell really well in some brands. For example I went on posh to see what was selling in Madewell, and I saw tons of petite sizes sold as well as tall. Anyway last year I made so much money picking up XXS items and size 23 jeans, glad I didn't just leave money on the table by skipping them based on what other people said. I like to follow XXS and petite fashion discussion groups to find out what styles and brands these buyers are looking for. My experience is that I struggle to sell a lot of plus size clothing apparently, I used to do well selling Lane Bryant and Torrid apparently and I have a ton of them now sitting in my store. I think some plus size items do well still but I used to see blanket recommendations to pick up plus size items regardless of brand or style and it just doesn't work. I sell a lot more small sizes now than plus sizes. Moral of the story is just look up whatever you're planning to pick up. Just because it's a larger size doesn't mean it'll sell.
I no longer buy XS or S in ANYTHING ! If I don’t recognize the brand I research it right then and there! I list very few men’s items and I really research prices. What doesn’t sell on PM I send to consignment.
Congrates on your young family , i myself havent signed up for ebay or other , Thanks for info!! saying Hello from beautiful Vancouver Island Canada, ! still collecting Cheers!!!
Question, do you promote on ebay? If so, what is a good percentage to use? Do you also feel sellers are listing items really cheap? I don't know 🤷🏼♀️ I also feel like blazers in general don't sell well? I could be wrong but I feel more and more business people working from home these days.
I just sold some Lucky Brand wedge sandals. I am wondering if it’s when you listed them versus the desirability of the item. I would re list them now and see what happens.
When i first started i only bought things that i knew either i would want or my family or friends would want. I figured it would sell . Problem came when i never could list, i ended up selling (for less than market)to those family friends or keeping it.😂
So helpful but honestly, I would have picked those items up as well. I like to move things quickly so I just keep dropping the price and upping the promotion on EBay until it sells. My goal is to make something on it, even if it’s just a couple dollars. That’s better than donating it back. If i only have a couple dollars in something, I’m good with selling it for $12-$15. My worst pick up recently was a talking toy, new with tags, that is stuck in demo mode. Ugh! My most awesome find recently was a brand new Coach wallet at Goodwill for $1.99. Keeping!
I was given advice to re-list items at the new dropped price and then delete the original listing instead of reducing the price in the original listing. Since this gets rid of the original Likes I’m unsure of doing it. Is it something you have done?
would love a list or video of what the mature brands are and also if there is a list for mature mens brands also or a video of mature brands and then more brands for the late20-30 people etc
Soooooo crazy on the Goodman piece. Egot a pair of denim look bermudas in a bundle and they sold fast and I still have the rest of the bundle. Keep your chin up you’re awesome and I am also noticing size matters for sure. Wishing your family the best and your soon new addition to your family ♥️
I'm a new reseller. I just began at the end of January. I am not from a large city where I am finding endless designer/desirable pieces at thrift stores or the Goodwill outlet, so I GEEK when I find the very few "nice" brands that other sellers recommend. Instant add to cart, regardless of size or style. My business model (experiment, really) is continuing to pick up these "do not buy" sizes or styles in hopes that RUclipsrs such as yourself tell other resellers not to pick them up and therefore I can hopefully make a sale in an eventual less saturated market. Is this a good idea? No. Will I stop doing this? Also no. You'll have to rip these non-Dojo style 7 For All Mankind jeans out of my cold, dead hands! LOL.
Would any of these items do well at a buy, sell trade store ? I've never tried selling to them before. But in my city we only have one and it Plato's Closet .
Joes are hard to sell, I sold some about 3 years ago and it was easy but now they are definitely not easy to sell. Some of my dresses are not selling at all. I’m a lot more fickle on some j crew items and I really only shop for items I know will sell. The only caveat is for dresses that have interesting pattern/print.
This is the most helpful reselling video I have seen! Certainly will use the tips (and nice to know I’m not the only one purchasing duds sometimes). Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing! I just started this so I appreciate the knowledge! My little girl (ok she's 28) is also 37 weeks pregnant 🤰🏻!! They just moved her due date up from 4-22 to 4-15. It's a boy! Tell me again what are you having?
At what point do you cut your loses and donate it back? I made a lot of mistakes when I first started thrifting a few years ago and am wondering if I should re-donate and move on.
When I first started I went to a sports store sample sale and spent $300 on nwt size small items. Bad bad choice, I still haven’t recouped my costs and it was just a bad idea starting out and not checking any comps, just buying what was cute :/ lesson learned.
My biggest mistake recently that comes to mind was buying a really nice leather Gucci wallet for $50. It only has one like and I don't understand why. I might just have to keep it for myself.
Morgan's overalls are size XS, big diffeence lol. The only thing i grab smaller than a 4 or S, is to take straight to my Plato's, we have a lot of tiny asian teeny boppers here on my island of Oahu
Lucky Brand shoes actually do really well for me but you’re right you have to check the style name. Lol I’ve had a pair of their sandals sell like next day.
Since you sell on ebay and poshmark, would you know if the same rule applies to listing titles concerning the word vintage. On ebay, you can use the abbreviation VTG and when someone searches for something vintage, VTG is automatically picked up as vintage. Do you know if this is the same as on poshmark? I contacted poshark but the answer I received didn't help at all.... They pretty much said the algorithms are all different and that everyone is shown something different in their feeds. If a title didn't matter, we wouldn't have to fill that information out in the first place. ANY help on this would be very much appreciated.
Oh and also I LOVE that you tell us your profit. I think you asked in your last video. You’re a fellow reseller I trust and I love that you show everything. It’s honest.
I was going through my death mountain yesterday and came across the exact same jeans. They say ankle so why wouldn't the average person think women's jeans. I looked and looked at them. Tried to pull up on Poshmark under men's for ankle jeans. Nope, nothing there. They are now in a bad and will be dropped off at our local homeless shelter. Sometimes I just give in!
I have almost identical Madewell overalls! Also size XS and also little to no interest AND also paid up for them! Maybe I'll go relist them and see if that helps. 😂😂😂 (Notice you sold yours!)
Re the Joe's Jeans: pretty sure they are men's, esp as the half waist is 18.75 (37.5 full). Seems like an unusual style tho 😅 I can relate. I hit the bins over the weekend and grabbed a Burberry London trench. Wasn't sure if it was auth but I figured I'd take a shot. The upside was tremendous for a $1.57 item. It is indeed a fake. But it's a pretty darn good one. Nonetheless, I now have a stylish trench I can do nothing with. You live and learn and you thrift again, lol.
Hawaiian shirts are not all created equal... My (expensive) lesson. I need to plan a luau. Everyone gets to take a shirt home as a door prize. LOL
😂
😅😅😅
i laughed so hard. Yeah, I could see myself falling in that trap too. Buying the aesthetic only but brand is important too.
You should take them to an old folks home! Imagine them all decked out in Hawaiian shirts! It might cheer them up. ❤

I never have problems selling size xs or small
Chico's used to do very well for me, but now forget it. I haven't sold a Chico's item for over 6 months!
Same here, even their travelers line or larger items haven't sold
Tbh I would have picked up that Eileen fisher for that price and just listed for around $25 and it would have probably sold quick. 12:59 Its not that the denim is printed, its that they are skinny jeans, skinny jeans are out.. so are the straw rope heels.

I do ok with J Jill but not Talbots.
Wishing a blessed Move It March to all who observe!
That made me chuckle
About to begin selling, so appreciate this! Been a buyer for years, but selling is a whole different thing!
Much needed reminders for a fellow seasoned reseller❤
As a newer reseller, this is one of my favorite videos from you! Thanks for sharing :)

If I had all the money back from my bad buys/unsold items, I could probably retire😆
Comps are so important! Even if we have sold the item or other items from that brand.
Thanks for the reminders! Great video! It’s just that the live shows have messed with the comps.
Great video and great reminders! I get lazy for sure on checking comps. Especially at estate sales. Then when I get home and look up the item on Posh, there are like 6 for sale in the same size. UGH.
Buy sell trade stores are great so u don’t get stuck with stale inventory
With jeans I try the pockets depth with my hands. Men jeans have deep pockets, women’s jeans I can barely put my hands in the pockets. I’ve got small skinny hands
Size 38 in European sizing is size M so around 27 28

I don't get all the complaints about small sizing, I sell tons of XXS, XS sizes, it's highly brand and style specific. Also platform specific- I sell lots of these small sizes on depop and they have a younger buyerbase. Petites as well- petite sizes sell really well in some brands. I sell a lot more small sizes now than plus sizes.
Moral of the story is just look up whatever you're planning to pick up. Just because it's a larger size doesn't mean it'll sell.
Same I sell XXS as well. Just like there are plus size women, there are smaller women who have problems finding clothes in their size too
This was such a helpful video. I have done some of those same ones but needed someone else to tell me and remind me of them. So relatable.
🎉🎉congratulations on your baby!! You so strong being a solo entrepreneur with 2 babies. 😮🎉🎉🎉
You are very good Mogi! Thank you for your help in our job!
Live sales are aso affecting the sale of these brands
Excellent video! I agree 100%. This is a great video for beginners.
Thank you for sharing this info, Mogi Beth.
I just sold some Lucky Brand wedge sandals. I am wondering if it’s when you listed them versus the desirability of the item. I would re list them now and see what happens.
When i first started i only bought things that i knew either i would want or my family or friends would want. I figured it would sell .
Problem came when i never could list, i ended up selling (for less than market)to those family friends or keeping it.😂
Do you use a light box? If so, which one? Your photos are so bright and crisp!
I was thinking the same thing! I'm jealous. Lol
I love watching your videos ❤
Thank you!!!
Keeping!
Always exited to see a new video by you Mogibeth! ❤
I was given advice to re-list items at the new dropped price and then delete the original listing instead of reducing the price in the original listing. Since this gets rid of the original Likes I’m unsure of doing it. Is it something you have done?
Unfortunately I have a lot of NEW with tags Levi’s premium denim jeans that are moving very slowly
would love a list or video of what the mature brands are and also if there is a list for mature mens brands also
or a video of mature brands and then more brands for the late20-30 people etc
Soooooo crazy on the Goodman piece. Egot a pair of denim look bermudas in a bundle and they sold fast and I still have the rest of the bundle. Keep your chin up you’re awesome and I am also noticing size matters for sure. Wishing your family the best and your soon new addition to your family ♥️
Isn't it sad so much goes to the landfill because it just isn't popular anymore..

I'm taking a break from reselling skirts and focusing on items that sell more quickly.
I loved the video!! I don’t resell but when looking for myself I will be more careful!!
Would any of these items do well at a buy, sell trade store ? I've never tried selling to them before. But in my city we only have one and it Plato's Closet .
I feel your pain 😢.

That blazer is beautiful. But, like you say, it doesn't matter.
Good to know. Thank you!
I am really shocked about those lucky sandals!
Hi, I went on to your resources link and no longer see your inventory spreadsheet. Do you not offer that anymore?
This is the most helpful reselling video I have seen! Certainly will use the tips (and nice to know I’m not the only one purchasing duds sometimes). Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing! I just started this so I appreciate the knowledge! My little girl (ok she's 28) is also 37 weeks pregnant 🤰🏻!! They just moved her due date up from 4-22 to 4-15. It's a boy! Tell me again what are you having?
Have you had any luck sending Eileen Fisher items back to them for recycling and credit?
Hi! I would relist the MADEWELL overalls, for $60+. I just sold the exact ones in a size 6, for $60….took over a year 😢
Morgan's overalls are size XS, big diffeence lol.
My posh is dead. I get a lot of likes but no offers. Im getting ready to have a garage sale

Thank you for sharing this, appreciate you .

Thank you for sharing , when I started I went for the items I liked BIG mistake 😂😂😂😂
Curious question, do you relist? If so how often? I relist mine about every 20 days and I notice it helps. I have about 900 items.
The background music was super distracting. Otherwise great information !
I came to say the same thing. Highly annoying.
You can’t please all the people… I didn’t even notice the music this time and I usually hate background music.
What background music?
I have almost identical Madewell overalls! Also size XS and also little to no interest AND also paid up for them! Maybe I'll go relist them and see if that helps. 😂😂😂 (Notice you sold yours!)
Fantastic Video! Thanks for sharing!! ~C
Do you sell on Mercari at all?
Re the Joe's Jeans: pretty sure they are men's, esp as the half waist is 18.75 (37.5 full). Seems like an unusual style tho 😅 I can relate. I hit the bins over the weekend and grabbed a Burberry London trench. Wasn't sure if it was auth but I figured I'd take a shot. The upside was tremendous for a $1.57 item. It is indeed a fake. But it's a pretty darn good one. Nonetheless, I now have a stylish trench I can do nothing with. You live and learn and you thrift again, lol.
EBay is Horrific... I cannot get 1 sale a day consecutively... EVER...For Decades! Steer Clear....Have a Yard Sale$$$$😂
