I've ordered one of these and have been waiting for it to arrive for around a month. Everyday i look up "Stumpjumper Comp Alloy 2021" to see any reviews (there are not many) so thank you for this video!
I own the S4 (5'11) Stumpjumper Comp *Carbon* version since 10 moths here in Switzerland. Honestly, this bike is incredible and I personally ride it with the flip chip in the high position 90% of the time and it makes a huge difference how it rides compared to the slacker low pos. :)
Hi, I hope you will see this. I am in need of an advice please. Would you rather go with this Stumpy /slightly used/ or Marin RZ 3 /new/? Both 2021 for about the same price. I just don´t know which one to go with.
Thanks for the video! I just bought this bike, but I'm waiting for covid to get lost before I can pick it up (outside of my area). I've been waiting for you to make this video! Keep up the great work!
After waiting for an SC Tallboy alloy R build that kept getting delayed again and again, I canceled my special order and after calling a few shops in my area I got lucky and found this bike in an S4 Cast Umber color. Its a great bike with the latest geometry and great components off the bat for the price. Suspension and brakes are a major upgrade from the entry level model. G2 brakes offer a lot of confidence when descending I love them. Weighed my bike on a bathroom scale (terrible way to weigh a bike) just to get a rough estimate and it came in at 34.4lbs with one up components composite pedals and no bottle cage(I think James weight measurement to be more accurate than mine). I've been doing mostly climbing since I'm up in the mountains for the summer and while it climbs well it feels heavier compared to my 2018 Scott scale 960 hardtail but that's to be expected this bike is way more heavy duty and capable than my last hardtail. Descending is incredible offers so much capability its scary. This bike is leaps and bounds more capable than I will ever be. I reached 30mphh on a downhill scared to death and the bike wanted more(I attribute that to the FOX suspension and new geometry). So this bike is a win IMO if you have the cash spring for the carbon comp model from testing it it feels way lighter and will be better for those tough climbs given the lighter weight. But all in all very happy with my purchase. I want to add some new components as things wear out to bring the weight down. Any ideas on what will make the biggest real world difference? Great review James
@@Jamesthebikeguy It's a great riding bike, but unfortunately, the rear shock had to be sent back to Fox due to a defect with the 3-position lever not staying in its detents. Maybe, if I am lucky, the shock will be coming back from their repair facility this week. Another minor quibble is with the flip chips. After my third ride, I was getting terrible creaking under power. When I got home, I checked the torque on all the pivot points which were good. Then, I stepped on the crank in the 6 o'clock position, alternating from side to side to put some lateral load on the rear end and traced the noise back to the Horst links. Decided I wanted to flip the chips to put the bike into the high position. Noticed there wasn't ANY grease on those parts and the flip chip is metal on metal how it fits together. Put a little Phil Wood grease on there and now it's quiet. I've only ridden the bike in low BB mode, so I am curious to get back on it to see how it feels with the higher BB. I am hoping that helps with rock and root strikes. We have lots of rock here in Central Texas. The bike is so much more capable than my old Camber Evo, but not as good of a climber and takes a bit more effort to push around a corner. Longer wheelbase and slacker head angle will do that. I am eager to compare this to the Stumpy Carbon Expert which is the bike I had intended to buy, and still do. It's been on backorder since December 1. I bought this alloy model figuring it's resale will make for a very cheap extended "rental" if you get my drift.
My regular Alloy is coming in on the 11th. The shop called and asked if I want this specific bike in my size as it had just came in. I get that it has much better componentry and would cost so much more to add this componentry to my bike, I just don't think spending the extra 1000 is worth it to a newbie like me. It appears to still be available according to their site but I don't know man, I can afford it, but I don't see it as necessary yet. On top of that I really love the black, the green isn't bad per say but I do love the black.
I've never had a MTB and was between a Fuse Comp 29 and jumping up to this. I went with the Fuse, and I should have it next week! Used your Fuse video in my consideration
They have these for pre-order, maybe in stock too if you check the link. This video was done several months ago. (The snow could be the tell 😂) so I doubt this exact one would still be for sale.
Managed to get one three weeks ago. Actually was the only one is the S4 size that the distributor had delived for my country, fresh off the truck. Btw, the camouflage AMS frame guard looks sick on this frame/color. The dropper post cable rattles like hell, it's the only annoying thing about this bike.
@@bert3566 My immediate first impressions were that it's very playful, easy to move around. It actually scared me on the first going down a trail, because I didn't expect such a snappy response. Coming from and longer-travel enduro bike, jumps and bunny hops feel easier, really. I'm not the most experienced biker, but that's how it felt to me. I guess I know now why it's called a stumpjumper :)
@@bert3566 The suspension work a bit too linear for jumps, in my opinion. I had to run a bit less sag than what i'm used to, felt like it bottoms out easy. Haven't tried to play around with tokens yet, as it doesn't come with any in the box.
Why’d you pick the S5? I’m debating between S4 and S5. At 6’3” (almost) the S5is probably right, but 500 mm reach is massive. I do have a slightly positive ape index. Any thoughts @Jamesthebikeguy ? Excellent vid BTW.
@@richardradcliffe6047 I'm 6'1 and wanted a more planted feel, the bike doesn't feel big at all. Not sure on the size chart but 6'3 on a S4 might be pushing it imo

One thing to consider is that the polygon t8 is 3lbs heavier and doesn't not climb as well as this bike. I guess that's what makes this bike different from the bunch is the suspension design it has. And it seems like the giant trance is downhill oriented as opposed to this bike. This bike is literally the definition of a trail bike while other designs are more enduro focused.
@@jlj547 the polygon t8 is also $1000 less and has a very steep seat angle so 3 pounds isn't a bad deal. And compared to the Giant the stumpjumper has a 1.5° slacker HTA and is a bit longer so if the Trance is an Enduro bike then the stumpjumper is reserved for the bike park.
@@nope929 Oh i meant the Giant trance x. Not the regular trance.
