  • The Creating Bioregional Funding Ecosystems three-part series takes a candid, pragmatic, and in-depth look at the theory and practice of funding regenerative work in bioregions.
Part 2 is "Laying the Groundwork" with a focus on the Greater Tkaronto Bioregion (GTB), Canada. Dan Longboat, Associate Professor and Director of the Indigenous Environmental Institute at Trent University, along with Susan V. Bosak and Brian Puppa of the GTB Core Team, give the discussion context. Then Joe Brewer, Co-Founder of the Design School for Regenerating Earth, invites presentations that highlight current systems and community examples from Justine Dainard, who led Our Food Future and is Smart Cities Project Manager with the County of Wellington, and Vicki Saunders, Founder of Coralus.

The series draws on content from the 7-Generation Bioregional Earth Summit and the Design School for Regenerating Earth.
We are in ecological and cultural overshoot. We face deeply complex, interconnected local and global crises - and they will continue, increasing in intensity. As Joe Brewer discusses in his seminal book The Design Pathway for Regenerating Earth, a strategic, interconnected bioregional approach is foundational for finding our way back into balance with all life on this planet.
How can we create financial structures and systems to fund the vital bioregional regeneration required? Of course, funding isn't an isolated topic. In practical terms, each bioregion needs three key pillars: Bioregional Learning Center (the keystone structure), a Portfolio of Projects (both social and ecological regeneration), and a Bioregional Foundation (which supports a funding ecosystem, regenerative economy, and governance).
