- We have finally accepted the reality of climate change, now we must get real about the solution. The most surprising truth is that we know the solution to climate change and have known it for a long time. But we are being distracted by sexy strategies like hydrogen energy and carbon offsets that offer little hope of much help for decades. We are diverting billions of dollars from the real alternative energy solutions of wind, solar and electric battery technology. Dr. Joseph Romm has a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. In the 90s, Romm helped oversee the U.S. Department of Energy’s work on climate solutions, ultimately serving as Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. In 2009, Time named him “Hero of the Environment″ and Rolling Stone included him in their list of 100 “People Who Are Changing America.” An author of ten books, CNN host Van Jones has called Romm “the communicator’s communicator.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This is a must-watch for everyone.Shared for you Joseph
I love how you connected your personal story with the broader issue of climate change. It really drives home the urgency and personal responsibility we all share.
Thank you. I wish more scientists and others would tell their personal story.
@@JosephRomm007 experience is the greatest teacher
Spot on, Joe. Beautifully said with such clarity. We all must STOP THE DAWDLE! and ACCELERATE THE REDUCTIONS!
The comparison of carbon offsets to paying someone else to exercise for you is spot on. It really highlights the absurdity of relying on offsets rather than taking direct action.
Thanks. I think good metaphors and analogies help crystallize things.
We all should work together to tackle this.
Rollin Stones, well done !!!!! I want to read this
the breakdown of why carbon offsets aren't effective was enlightening. Never thought about it that way before.
Such an informative session!
Wow, the way your uncle could explain complex concepts so clearly is really cool and it's obvious how much that has inspired you in your own career path. So lovely to hear about those kinds of familial influences.
Yes, he is not only a great physicist, but a very humble man. A great inspiration to me.
I love the fact that he didn't just fear-monger but offered concrete solutions. Makes the problem feel more manageable.
This was so motivational!
I love how the speaker broke down a complex idea. Bravo Joseph
I learned that from my uncle.
Grateful for this Joseph !
Such a fresh perspective on a common issue.
Excellent delivery too
Writing 2000 articles in a decade is crazy. That's like 4 a week. There's some serious dedication within that.
And he does it all for free, doesn't make cent, yeah right
Well done Joseph, i have watched other content of yours and i’m always very intrigued and learn alot !
This will definitely impact my future decisions.
It’s refreshing to hear a talk that isn’t about politics but focuses on practical solutions. However, the reality is that political support is essential for large-scale systemic changes.
This is a real challenge
It's so wholesome that all of that stemmed from him wanting to find answers for his brother.
Thank you. Sometimes a simple question can have profound impact on someone’s life.
I hope this talk has the impact it deserves, thanks Joseph
Excellent work
Joe's simple, clear, cogent call to action is incredibly useful, and just what we need in the climate movement. Bravo!
Thanks. It took weeks to get it this short.
I felt so connected to the speaker’s experiences. Well done Joseph
Appreciate you sharing this, thorough got it
Great job. Congrats Joseph!
Thanks!
Excellent share
The talk was both informative and entertaining.
Got me thinking this one
His story about Hurricane Katrina and how it impacted his brothers home is a good reminder of how climate change IS affecting people in real time. Sick of hearing people trying to deny it.
OK, but the Gulf of Mexico has experienced hurricanes not only for the last 100 years, but as far back as historical accounts go.
So what caused hurricanes back in the 1500s? It certainly wasn't internal combustion engines.
Today we notice these natural disasters because more people live along the Gulf Coast, and we have a hyperactive news media.
This was a great reminder to stay positive. Excellent talk
Interesting story telling, drew me, I got the idea in the end !!!!!
appreciate the practical advice given.
One of the better climate change focused talks
I definitely appreciate the urgency in his message to reduce emissions asap but I don't think the general public is ready to make the changes required.
This has inspired me to take action.
A must watch. Such a good message from the brains behind the climate blog (Climate Progress) that shaped strategy for many years. I particularly appreciate Joe's combination of deep experience, grounded research, and clear (often funny) communications.
Thanks. I recommend strongly to anyone doing a TEDx talk to get as much coaching as possible.
We all need to find solutions and ore importantly implement them
It's so wholesome that all of that stemmed from him wanting to find answers for his brother.
Life can only be lived forward, but it can only be understood backward.
@@ClimateProgress profound!!!
excellent tedx
Love the way he talks about his uncle and yes that ability to explain things in a way people can understand is so beautiful.
Thx. My uncle’s a great man and I owe him a lot. I’m glad I was to pay homage to him Here.
@@JoeRomm-nw3tz and you really did well done
I wish I could attend this event in person.
Highlighting the efficiency of electric heat pumps and their benefits for schools and homes is a simple yet effective solution we can all support.
Yes. Everyone who cares about our children should be able to embrace this action.
Inspiring talk, well done Joe Romm
Tnanks Joe
love how engaging the speaker was.
Thanks for this amazing talk
I think a lot of the issue here is there are so many aspects the new ideas and science get applied to it's easy to lose sight of the important stuff, even when it's the thing we're all existing on
Yes. We get distracted by shiny new things at the expense of what works now.
@@ClimateProgress how true
I agree - we must get real
Great talk Joe
Truly an idea worth sharing
Excellent idea dn love how you really went on a drive to tackle this problem.
The content was well-researched and presented.
Fascinating
Bravo
Really enjoyed this talk
Congratulations 🥂
Brilliant
cool, learned something new... thanks TED!
Wouldn’t the world be so lovely if everything was perfect. Why don’t they just do it?
really great stuff!!
Thank you
It's a very good idea to keep to currently existing technologies...
The problem is that, keeping it real, rules out batteries... And without batteries there's no intermittent renewables, like wind or solar...
So this nice gentleman has no solution, much less a simple one, to "solve" climate change...
I think your focus on existing technologies like solar and wind is great, but dismissing potential future breakthroughs like hydrogen and nuclear might be short-sighted. Innovation can’t be ignored when it comes to this subject
Congratulations
Congrats
Reducing omissions is the solution - get with it people
Heat pumps in schools? Huh, never thought about that before. Obviously that's a game-changer for air quality but I wonder just how much of an impact it'd make on students and their performance
The idea of using heat pumps in schools is really good but I doubt it's feasible for underfunded schools. They're already struggling so much for the things that ARE necessary let alone something extra like that
What seems the saddest to me is that we live in a world where things like ventilation systems in school aren't routinely updated... our perspectives are so out of whack
Exactly. Such a simple solution. We need to spread the word.
Fab talk
50 billion tons wow, that is a big blanket
I'm glad you liked the metaphor.
5:07 we need to stop calling Fossil Gas "Natural"
It honestly makes me so upset to hear that we've known the solution to this problem and even were aware of climate change since the 80's and just ??? haven't done anything tangible about it
It is very frustrating. The Inflation Reduction Act is the biggest climate bill this country has ever seen with $1 trillion or more funding for energy
Good night ❤
Surely there's some advantage to offsets though? Like it might not be the ultimate solution but it has to help at least a little
Fab
I'm glad he mentioned the plane thing around the 7:50 mark, this has never made sense to me that you could just pay an extra twenty bucks and suddenly the airplane isn't emitting CO2? Like if it was that easy why wouldn't they just be doing that as standard practice?
Thanks. I'm glad that the message resonated.
Do you remember the days when we had dial up???
Clarity is key isn't it Joe
What are you doing to day to make the world a better place ?
Climate change is a global responsibility
Solutions staring us in the face but yet we don't do enough, shame on us.
If his brother rebuilt his house he'd still be enjoying his house today.
CCS technologies are fully researched, developed and available allbeit viewed as not "profitable".
How can we capture safely the co2 ?
I'd just ask my brother how risk aversive he is. Highly aversive, I'd tell him to build some were that won't flood. No real aversion, I'd tell him to rebuild where he is.
Don't listen to the media, I have them on mute on my socials.
Surprised to hear heat pumps are outselling gas boilers now. Maybe the green transition is happening faster than I thought.
omg his explanation of politics was so good, what a legend!
That's a joke I only ever heard once, three decades ago.
We know the solution, then why have we not tackled it properly?
We need to act now using existing resources and solution, am I wrong
All of these are good ideas and would help the people out massively - especially those students. I hope to see some of these solutions implemented.
Joe, should I rebuild my home ? Made the hairs stand on may rm for some reason.
Super diverse range of interested Joe?
Never even mentioned nuclear, which is our only real hope.
Sad.
The speaker made me think differently about the topic.
Greenhouse gasses are on the increase and causing issues
Yeah I don't mean to yuck his yum but I'm going to have to bring up the fact that causation doesn't equal correlation on this one. Like... kids at schools with better ventilation are probably performing better than those who don't because they would have access to all kinds of better resources, not just better heating systems.
