She sells cow dung products but not milk to save native cows of India

  • Meet Aparna Rajagopal, a lawyer-turned-organic farmer and animal rescuer who has created a business from the dung of native Indian cow breeds. She runs Beejom, an animal sanctuary and an organic farm spread over 10 acres in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budh Nagar district - a half-an-hour drive from New Delhi.
One of the unique features of Beejom is its gaushala or cattle shelter. When Rajagopal started the shelter, she decided to keep only cows indigenous to India.
The shelter currently has over 120 cows from 12 different native Indian breeds. Many of them were rescued. She follows a unique business model. She does not sell the milk of these cows but keeps it for the calves. Instead, she has created a business from their dung. She calls her enterprise ‘Dung Ho’.
Can selling just dung be profitable? Especially when the demand for A2 beta-casein laden milk from indigenous cows is growing every day?
But Rajagopal believes that her model is equally effective. The 120 cows on her farm excrete about 1,300 kilograms of dung every day. The dung is not sold raw, but is converted into useful products before being sold to customers.
One of the most interesting products made by Dung Ho are cow dung logs. These dung logs can be used to replace traditional wood or coal for burning. Burning of cow dung logs emit much less pollutants than burning wood.
Apart from dung logs, Beejom also makes and sells flower pots, oil lamps, statues of Indian gods and goddesses, puja kits, dung manure and bio pesticides. All these products are made of cow dung.
Dung of the indigenous cows is more suited for making these products as they contain more fibre than the exotic or cross bred counterparts.
Rajagopal says: “The idea behind creating these value-added products from dung is to generate resources so that these non-milch indigenous cattle can be preserved in a sustainable way”.
Can this model benefit small farmers? Can it generate extra income for them? Rajagopal believes that dung can add an extra layer of income for small farmers apart from fertilising their fields.

    • @rohitjoshi7737
      @rohitjoshi7737 3 года назад

Must read once for the environment🙏
The main causes of climate change are:
Humanity’s increased use of fossil fuels - such as coal, oil and gas to generate electricity, run cars and other forms of transport, and power manufacturing and industry
Deforestation - because living trees absorb and store carbon dioxide
Increasingly intensive agriculture - which emits greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide
      1. meat 15% greenhouse gas emissions.
      2. 77% of agricultural foods are used in the meat industry
      3. There is a lot of water waste in the meat industry.
So overall the biggest enemy of the environment. Non-veg eater. and Unknowingly dairy products Because most companies sell cows and buffaloes. Later, they sells meat and things made from them in the market. And still people are not understanding the cycle of nature. Educated, but cannot see the truth. And there is extreme lack of emotions. About nature. Stop killing creatures. The virus is teaching something. Just do it enough.
And how many viruses and diseases have come from animals to humans, think something
Data and research source - ourworldindata.org/
Be vegetarian / vegan and save the environment. Add as much tree-based food to your diet.
We have to promote more and more environment friendly business. And in farming also we should end chemical farming. And start promoting traditional farming and seeds. Stop subsidizing chemical farming.
Renewable energy should get more subsidy and further research should be done so that it also does not waste any more in future. Implement Solid Waste Management across India. It should be added to education and management of waste and taught to children from there.
We should also introduce a carbon credit scheme in our country. So that whatever pollution is done, give carbon credit to the government. And it should be supervised before the Supreme Court. Along with this they also came under the Right to Information
Also oppose a poor draft like eia draft 2020. Also, the export of beef and meat etc., which we are going up, is also the biggest reason for pollution. Due to such useless law, floods occur in places like Bihar and Assam etc. Chemical factories spread poison in cities. The reason for this is also such a weak law.
I also tell you the side of religion in it. religion is not against nature. All religions also talk about nature, so you think that now one who goes against nature will be against the values of religion. Do some thinking and study honestly from all sides. 🙏
Beyond taste, think about this nature, about animals, about their suffering, do not do anything that goes against nature. If you study in religion and you will know yourself. This permission is given and you are also given discretion. Religion is allowed according to the time and situation, but you have made it mandatory without understanding it.

Thanks Aparna to make me feel that somewhere people are trying sincerely to save our gomatha n mother earth.🙏🙏🙏 Great job!!! Keep it up... Focusing on indigenous cow breeds and generating revenue from cow dung products is great thing to see. No one would have thought about this but these guys showed this in reality. This shows how generation of revenue form non milk products could be done while protecting native breeds of cows, which are disappearing rapidly.
I hope this will encourage others and be replicated elsewhere. Thank to DTE team for such useful and unique content 👍👍

Aparnaji, I remember by grand mother making the buffalo dung patties that are mixed with rice husk. This patties are used for cooking. May be an experiment can be done to check it's calorific value. After this patties are burnt, the next day morning, this are used to clean teeth. I still remember cleaning teeth when I was around 8 years, it had a very clean feeling.

Madam, I have no words to express how innovative you are. God bless you immensely. The statement that 'cows have life beyond milk', is superb. The former CM of Karnataka Sri Siddaramaiah, has recently said, what can we do with old cattle, because Karnataka is bringing ban on cow slaughter. I think Smt Aparna Rajagopal is the answer for this, having proved that it is not milk, but cow dung, which gives additional income much more than milk since she is supporting indigenous breeds of cattle. Kudos. Kudos, Kudos.
