    People are commenting that there are volume differences and whatnot, but I think this vid is a most fantastic comparison. I own both synths, and this really captures what it's like to have both of them in your quiver and jump back and forth between them for what they can each do. I'm a Moog fanboy, but its sweet, syrupy roundness turns into flab in some sections. The Korg is a bit cynical, but it's a galactic robot soldier. Korg can't be Moog, Moog can't be Korg, both are very musical.

    You can transpose -12 from the Monologue Program settings so you can go lower on it too. And also automate both VCO1+2 twelve semitones lower by assigning pitch to the slider. So you can go -24 lower on VCO1 and -36 lower on VCO2 in combination with the pitch knob. PLUS there is a global transpose where you can go another -12 semitones. That's already multiple octaves in the clicks

    Already own a Monologue, but if I didn't, I would have bought one after this video.
    The Moog is cool, sounds a bit/a lot (depending on what sound you want) better but that doesn't justifify the price for me.
    Not to mention the preset memory difference (16 vs 100) and the step sequencer of the Mono, with the glide and motion sequence options you can sketch a bassline within a minute.
    I originally planned to sequence the Mono externally, but heck, no need to, no need to at all...

      Uriel Ortega the monologue is great for the price. Really great actually. It’s got a limited envelope but with some cool other functions that sorta make up for it. The filter is the big difference. The Monologue can be more punchy but less juicy than a Moog or Roland.

    I really like these kinds of videos by Andersons. Keep it up! Jack holds my attention with his playfulness and skills.
    I bought the Monologue for its reasonable price and mostly positive reviews. I wanted a mono with a sequencer to contrast my Deepmind 12. I might have gone with a Novation Bass Station or more preferably a Sub Phatty if I'd had the extra cash though. But I'm happy with the monologue for now. Use what you've got I always say but that's mostly to combat my constant GAS!

    I own the Monologue and I've really got GAS for the Sub Phatty! The Monologue has the motion sequencer and that's a plus, but the small keys are a pain. HINT: The Korg really shines with the Zoom MS-70 CDR. Of course, so would the MOOG! On a side note, I just got the DSI Prophet Rev.2 -16 a couple of days ago so now I'm learning it. That means the Monologue will be ignore for awhile. But I bet they'll pair nicely eventually.

    Great video, very entertaining!
    I have the Monologue and to me it is an excellent bass machine.
    Now I'm even more convinced now you showed us it stands out quite well against the 3x more expensive Moog.
    I want to add a few things to your presentation which makes it even better.
    I play the Monologue in a setup with a 61 full keys midi keyboard with normal pitchweel which makes it so much more fun to play. Doing so, I discoverd the actual Monologue keyboard doesn't cover the full range of the synth. With a midi keyboard connected, I found out that you can play 2 octaves higher and 9 semitones lower (before the clicking begins), which extends the range considerably.
    Something else, you mentioned the DRIVE function on the Moog, but the monologue has a DRIVE function as well, which adds a considerable amount of punch to the sound.
    Anyway , I love my little monologue bass machine.
    I just ordered the Behringer model D to introduce the Moog sound in my little studio for less than 400 Euro. I'm lookng forward to it but the Monologue stays!

    If you flip the monologue over to VCO 2, you can transpose the saw wave to lower octaves and get it way down into the clicks.

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 4 года назад

      Orlando Pergamo And by automating pitch adjustments through the slider you can go an additional -12 on both VCOs

  • @adognamedshinji
    @adognamedshinji 6 лет назад +45

    The korg can go lower than that if you tune vco 2 down by a full octave on its lowest setting

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 4 года назад +3

      You can also get VCO1 an octave lower by going to settings and press the third lit button to access pitch setting and transpose it -12 and both VCO 1 and 2 will go as lowww

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 4 года назад +2

      I also found that tou can assign VCO1 Pitch or the VCO2 Pitch to the slider so with the combination of first transposing -12 semitones from the pitch setting and if you also automate both VCO1+2 with the slider you get a total of 24 semitones for lower than the lowest octave setting. Those together with the pitch knob is a total of 36 semitones lower for VCO2 :) It will be just clicks then but it can be done.

  • @zoeydeberry5337
    @zoeydeberry5337 5 лет назад +6

    Yo, so with the saw wave oscillators on the Monologue if you are going for those low notes you should use oscillator 2 because it can actually be tuned 2 octaves below oscillator 2. This is really because korg put the saw wave and triangle wave an octave higher than the square wave on oscillator 1 for some weird reason but I thought itd be a useful tip for anyone who gets one or has one and didnt realize it.
    edit: Just double checked and the triangle wave on oscillator 2 can be tuned down to 10hz and the saw wave gets around there as well.

  • @EarlyMist
    @EarlyMist 9 месяцев назад

    The Monologue does whacky sequences including percussive / melody multitimbral sounding stuff. It's cheap as, it's battery powered and it has a lot of patch save slots.
    If I was a keyboardist doing synth bass in a band I'd take the Subsequent. The overall sound to me for that purpose has a leg up on the Monologue
    For everything else I personally need I'll gladly stick with the Monologue.

    Korgs have never sounded like Moogs, and Moogs have never sounded like Korgs. Or Roland or Arp or Yamaha or whomever. I think they both sound awesome, honestly. You don't even have to think of it in price brackets. If you want a tighter, punchier bass with a really cool, kind of dry filter, then get the Korg. If you want a more harmonic, warmer, kind of juicier sound, of course, get a Moog. "Horses for courses," right.?. ~shrug~

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 6 лет назад +1

      yobhsiFehT I think the MS20 might be a better competitor to the Sub Phatty since they can both get pretty dirty and low.

    • @yobhsiFehT
      @yobhsiFehT 6 лет назад

      Haut Strange Definitely more filter range on an MS20! I think the Monologue actually has more built-in dirt options, but really, I think a big difference maker is just that characteristic, almost-cliche “phatness” that Moogs get! Just different harmonics, I guess, but it does give a sort of intangible “feel” thing that I guess most people take as “better,” but... I dunno, blablabla, I just think it’s subjective and relative to given musical applications lol

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 6 лет назад +2

      yobhsiFehT I’m glad you’re being civil about it. There’s a whole lot of “Moogs are the best” “Nothing can beat the Moog” “Everything else sucks” in the comments section here. You’re totally right. The sound/filter of a certain synth is totally subjective. Between these 2, I prefer the Phatty, but I’d take the MS20 over any other mono besides a Pro One and maybe an SH-101. The MS20s filter is out of this world and having 2 resonant filters give it a set of harmonics that not many other synthesizers can achieve. At the end of the day I’m glad there are so many options so anyone can have whatever sound they like. Cheers! :)

      Haut Strange Well, full disclosure, I’m just a dumb singer/guitar player 😉 But from where my analog obsession has gotten me so far, if money were no object, my synth collection would probably have about as much Korg in it as Moog, honestly 🤷🏼‍♂️ And I hadn’t heard of the Pro One until I saw Behringer was cloning it, and now I SO want one! 😳 lol

    hi,i got a subphatty but i just really want to keep it in my home studio and i am thinking to buy this korg monologue for the gigs .the behringer model d is great too but without patches memory and sequencer ...i use to have korg keyboards(ms20,poly61,m1) and i never had to fix them.there is the arturia minibrute for the same price but i am not so hot for this one.

    if you got 600-800 bucks get the Moog, if you got a 200-300 then get the korg. Both great, one is more money and the sound shows that.

    The cleanliness and the range at which it fills the spectrum even on bass notes are what separate the Moog. That and the moog has a clean musical filter. I own a monologue and still think it holds up just like some of the other comments say but from a raw standpoint the moog is distinct

  • @the25thhr41
    @the25thhr41 5 лет назад

    why didnt you turn up the drive on the monologue when you put up the drive on the Moog sp, you could also you shift functions on the moog to go down 12 semitones and could also pitch down the korg to clicks

    Couldn't you change the shape of the wave with the LFO and "wave amt" knob on the Sub Phatty to get the same effect as the Monologue "shape" knob being demonstrated at 17:54?

    Want a korg monologue. Do i need a sequenser or is the built in enough for most ppl ?

    Before i get into this. Is that James Franco in that photo? Also Why? LOL Now on to the Synths. as for the low end on the Monologue it can... Wait let me check...... Got a little distracted there. Yes it does go in the lower range with a midi hardware controller. If you are considering but are tight on cash the Monologue gets the job done. That being said the quirky layout on the monologue and a slightly better sound out of the Sub especially in the low end make it hard to blame anyone for spending a little extra. Also i like the more aggressive filter of the Sub. Considering the price with the monologue coming in under $345 US at the time of writing this and the Sub at $999 i'll leave you to decide if it's worth the extra. I love both of these synths and could suffice with either. But to help you decide you might want to think about the sequencer and automation of the Monologue which unlocks some really interesting sonic potential.

    With the Minilogue I can't compete with the dB of other synths like minibrute or ms20. Do you know any way to cramp up the sound with any external gear ? Thanks a lot for your great video :)

    • @rockstarjazzcat
      @rockstarjazzcat 6 лет назад

      Line level shifters. (EBTech makes handy rack mounted units.) And that's where mixers come in for balancing. Otherwise, dB "competition" doesn't make sense. Short of something like the line level shifter suggestion, you can of course loudness normalize by turning down the others and cranking the amp. Noise floor rises, but yeah, it's an audio signal. Hope that helps.

      Dexter Goldberg mixer of course? Or put it through a compressor with gain control.

    • @DexterPiano
      @DexterPiano 6 лет назад

      Thanks guys, what kind of compressor would you recommand for synths ?

    • @Skijumptoes
      @Skijumptoes 6 лет назад

      Depends what form factor you want really, but you can use small desktop ones, rack mounted one, or guitar pedals.
      Personally, i would get a multi-fx unit and that will rip any synth you put through it! If you're not going through any additional fx processing at the moment, then it's a game changer! Not a clue what kind of budget, but you can go from super cheap to super expensive, i quite like the dual Lexicon's racks as you can do some mad stuff with them. You can pick up some great Boss pedals secondhand too.
      Also depends on your genre, as there's some classics out there on the secondhand market, Or just pick up an old Behringer compressor, they're super cheap if you just want to noodle.
      Obviously, the most logical approach would be to go through a mixer for all your stuff, that has good gain/compression on each channel - again, not a big expense.
      Too many options, but i tend to go for something that adds to my creativity rather than just 'utility' hardware like line level boosters etc.

    When knob Master Volume in my Monologue is in position "zero", I still hear silent sounds in headphones (in output too) when I play on keys. Is it normal thing? Can I do something with it? I'd rather hear total silence when Master knob is off.

    Would be nice to hear both playing the same sequence/arp in a tune with drums and other parts. How they sound IN a mix is key, IMHO.
    Several mixes would be great to compare, from Ambient to DubStep. But, from what I have heard here, for about the same price, I would take the Korg + a nice effects box.
