We can say that our script writing has changed in the past 3 years since this video has come out. Yes smoke signals are not exactly "wireless waves", the refence could have been something else. That said it was still a way of comminating back in those times.
It lis though, before that we yelled to project our voices further. That is wireless communication at it's core. That's why they are called signals,it was a visual wireless communication.
