Yes, you can think of it as a constant. Sometimes it gets messy to use probabilities qx, px etc that would have many decimals. It simplifies if you assume an initial cohort (lx) of 1000, or 10000 etc. and then apply the probabilities provided. It is just a simplifying assumption. Then you trace this lx over the period so you get l(x+1),.....and dx, dx+1 etc. But some questions give you the life table with lx values. In that case, you use what is given and do not make assumptions. Hope this is clear? All best
