- translation of majima's karaoke song from yakuza kiwami 2, with some consulting from my pal @faerytells on twitter.
im quite rusty, so i was unsure of how exactly i should interpret some parts/the translation might be a bit weird in some places (notably like the entire 大統領?社長?お偉いさん? stanza i had a hard time understanding) and i took some liberties with the wording to make it flow a bit nicer. feel free to make suggestions and i'll correct any mistakes via annotation. full lyrics below!

If I could shape the world
In any way I wanted
And if I could craft myself a harem paradise
I'd let it all go, because you'd be unhappy
And if I wind up on a rice cracker-like bed
Resting on a pillow hard as a tombstone
in a musty den out in the sticks,
It's okay, as long as I know you've found happiness
No matter how cruel and merciless
the hell I'm thrust into is,
it'll be a thousand times better than seeing you sad!
If you're happy, then so am I; I don't mind!
There may be sadness, and some may hate me, but bring it!
If you're happy, if you're happy, it's alright!
So, hey, wipe off those tears
If you're happy, so am I; it's really okay!
Your being sad is such a waste of your rare beauty!
If you're happy, if you're happy, I really don't mind!
With my everything, I'll pray and pray for you
I love you, I love you
I won't even say, "Please don't forget me"
I love you, I love you
All I want is for you to be happy into tomorrow
I'll die for you
And I won't be afraid of anythin'
But if you're lonely, I'll come back
No... I'll come back a hundred times over!
If you're living, then I am too; I don't mind!
Your joy, your smile, come to me!
If you're living, if you're living,
If you're living, it's okay!
One more time let's go back to that house
If you're living, then I am too; I don't mind!
You don't need makeup or anything; you're beautiful!
If you're living, if you're living,
I really don't mind!
I'll fight again and again for you
I love you, I love you
I don't need money, pride, or anything of the sort
I love you, I love you
All I want is for you to laugh and live into tomorrow
If you're happy, then so am I; I don't mind!
There may be sadness, and some may hate me, but bring it!
If you're happy, if you're happy, it's alright!
So, hey, wipe off those tears
If you're happy, so am I; it's really okay!
Your being sad is such a waste of your rare beauty!
If you're happy, if you're happy, I really don't mind!
With my everything, I'll pray and pray for you
If you're happy... If--If you're happy
I really don't mind! It's okay!!
A President? A CEO? Some big shot?
What are you even supposed to do with that?
Anyway, what do you do?
What do you say to who?
What are you supposed to do in this world?
Have conviction? Is that it?
You should be happy
To live with happiness, with laughter, with a smile;
That much is okay
That much--that much is okay
That's my... yeah, that's my happiness
I love you, I love you
"Don't forget me--please don't forget me!"
...Are words I really want to say
But, it doesn't really matter
If you forget me, I won't mind
Because tomorrow you'll smile
Always, always and forever,
You'll be living, and smiling
I love you, I love you
I won't even say, "Please don't forget me"
I love you, I love you
All I want is for you to be happy into tomorrow
For you to be happy, forever and ever - Игры

my headcannon is that Kiryu understands what Majima is going through which is why he goes along with all of his crazy stunts....

Right at the end of Y0 where Kiryu gets to meet Majima for the first time, I've had the feeling that through the gap of Y0 to Yakuza 1 (or Kiwami), Kiryu had already been filled in about Majima's whole role and predicament throughout the whole Empty Lot business
Fuck this almost makes me cry as hard as the song
Especially after yumi went missing
@@kevinmulia6503 sadly i doubt that bc he didnt even know majima ran the grand, or his nickname when he did, both of which surely mustve come up if they actually stayed active together.
I just realized that Majima is the very essence of Yakuza, the game I mean. He’s loud, obnoxious, cheerful, and likes to fight so much that he’s willing to go to absolutely ridiculous length to do so, but at his very core he is an incredibly tragic and emotional man with deep, complicated history who’s lost everything he’s ever loved to organized crime.
Because no matter how ridiculous the substories are, no matter how over the top the fighting is, no matter how out of place the colorful mini games are, Yakuza is and always will be a serious crime drama at heart.

That's precisely why everyone loves him so much. It's impossible not to love a guy who puts his heart into absolutely everything he does and goes absolutely wild with it, while still holding to a clear and strict moral code
Majima is one of the best videogame's characters ever
Hallmark of a great series when there's one character so different from the main protagonist that fans can do nothing but admire the writing masterclass of the said character.
Majima's screeching looks like he was trying not to cry as after all the shenanigans with Kiryu-chan, he still loves Makoto.
was zero before or after he was married
Zero was way before, it took place almost 2 decades before his marriage.
0 - 2 = 18 years later
The Official timeline said he got married in 1992. Three years before Kiryu goes to jail. 5 years after 0.
wait wait wait MAJIMA NII SAN IS MARRIED WTF!!!!
At least in Kiwami 2 he got what he wanted, Makoto is living and happy , and doesn't worry about him , as long as he knows that that's all he needs to be happy, there's just no purer love than loving someone so much you don't even care about her loving you back for your own happiness , you just want her to be happy.
Also the fact that Majima Lives a life of crime, Thats practically the price of his decision, He wants the girl he loves to live a normal life not to get dragged in the struggles of a Yakuza
"Ya worked out some knots I've had for 18 years"

Majima at his heart, really wants to be a Yakuza, he could've gotten out and be with Makoto and lived away from this, but he didn't, he loves being a Yakuza.
Kiryu, on the other hand, has been trying to get out of the game since the first game and they keep pulling him back in to the point that 6 pushed him far enough to abandon everything.

Baka Mitai is a song sung by multiple characters, plus it gained viral meme status. But this is Majima’s song, and his song alone
What's even worse is knowing that Makoto spent how many god damn years in Sotenbori for the sole purpose of meeting Majima again. She stayed in the same town Lee died, where her big brother died, where she was kidnapped and sold into slavery...
Sotenbori is a place that holds many painful (understatement) memories, but for Makoto, Majima's short presence in her life made that town worth living in. Even for the slim chance of meeting him again. She was right there, waiting for him.
Her brother died in Kamurocho.
Tachibana died in the Empty Lot
I think that's when Majima realizes what he did saddled her with regrets, kind of like how Sera said at the end of 0. He did what he thought would protect her, but ended up this unfulfilled desire of hers. Thus, after seeing her again, he decides to send her the gift of the original watch band, to let her know that she met him again and release her from the last bit of sadness in her life.
The ending to Yakuza 0 is one of the most heartbreaking things i've ever experienced. After i'd finished it i was walking about for a week after like i'd actually just lost the love of my life or something. Then they go and reopen the wound in the Majima Saga...bastards.

What i love about this song, something that sets it apart from Majima's other songs where he purposely sounds off key and screetchy, given the lyrics and how downplayed his screetching and off tuneness can be at times, everything seems much more soulful, less comedic, it seems like Majima's facade of wacky Zanyness is really starting to break and we can see the sorrow and heartfulness behind it, and his voice cracks seem so genuine and emotional, it's hard not to get invested in it, and to top it all off, there are genuine parts of the song where, even if briefly, Majima will actually sing on tune, it just shows, Majima really really loved Makoto, with all of his heart, so much so, that even if it brought him nothing but pain to be without her, he does it, because he just wants to see her happy. FUCK, man! Majima, i love you so fucking much, WHY CAN'T THEY LET YOU BE HAPPY!?
that's one heartful, deep, and long ass sentence
He finds joy with Kiryu from time to time
Hit the nail on the head with this.
At least in Yakuza 7 he seems to finally be happy with himself.
Meanwhile kiryu in the background: WOO- WOO- WOO
6:07 The real majima comes through, not the mad dog act he puts on. Makoto was on that small list of those who got the real Goro Majima
His adventure trying to save Makoto is what shaped the Majima we know in Yakuza 1 and onward, so there's hardly any reason for him to act any crazier than he likes to, really hits the feels T-T

I actually imagine Majima just singing this song casually, then little by little, all the pent up memories of Makoto that he had since the beginning of Yakuza 0 up to their last scene in Yakuza 2, just piles up one by one, relieving each memories as the song goes and suddenly just...burst!
This isn't just a song, this is Majima's tribute, anthem and feelings for Makoto put together all in one emotional song.
All these are Majima's feelings etched forever in everyone's heart as a form of a song for his biggest "what if" and for the best love story that he never had.
And for some reason, I have a feeling that someday, somewhere, Makoto will actually listen to this song and she will still remember the hero that once saved her. All the lyrics will resonate with her buried feelings for Majima and she'll feel that somehow, the song was made for her. If Kiryu was in the Karaoke booth with him, I wonder how he would feel about the performance. It would be cool to see Kiryu trying to bring it up after the song only for Majima to brush it off with a challenge.

The fact that he starts the song off so ridiculous only to begin thinking about makoto is so genuinely wholesome. He starts having fun and being goofy, but by the time he gets to “I love you” he sings it in tune and sings it so genuinely. Like even though he’s trying to be screechy and funny, he can’t hide that he’s about to start crying so instead of hiding it, he just gives in and puts everything into the performance. Man, coming back to this song after being put in the same situation as Majima, aka where you just want that certain someone else to be happy, even if she's without you just hits so differently, it's soul crushing.
Same thing is happening to me rn. I even sent this video to her and asked her to read the lyrics lol
@@thebigzan hang in there my dude, i believe in you soldier
This song applies to me today, as the person I really really loved told me she had a new boyfriend. I literally tried to control my thoughts like majima- if she’s happy I’m happy. I don’t want to see her with her boyfriend as it will kill me inside.
I've been through the same, i know how it feels.
That shows you're a mature person, so good on you, man. I hope you find happiness with another girl.
Same aniki…
Man, me too. My crush whom I admire for 3 years now revealed about how he had a crush on a specific cute gal directly (he named her) to me a few months ago, I feel empty after he said it. I'm not sure how is he now, but I hope he's happy. Although, seeing him with another girl will probably makes my heart goes aching again on the inside. It's just gonna be full of regret and what ifs... I hope time heals yours, Aniki.
I know this is a year later, I hope you’re doing better friend. I’m going through the exact same thing, my ex and I were together since high school and were 25 now… shit hurt. 8 years down the drain… most mornings I feel like I only wake up to take care of my pets
Everyone asks where is majima (especially in Kiwami)
But nobody ever asks how is majima
I really cried at the end of Y0, now reading the lyrics of this song made me cry again. ffs im a 30 yo dude
Manly tears
Same here. Im close to 30
Like Kiryu once said "I cried. Doesn't make me less of a man"
Damn dude, I never thought I could relate on a level with a dude that runs around with a leopard print kinda jacket waving around a sword
This song hits, it really hits
holy fuck, i was literally sobbing halfway through until the end. it's really telling that he's hiding his sadness through his screechy voice and adlibs, and that just fucks me up more and more. thank you for translating this!! ;; w ;;
I mean how in the world he made me go from "wtf is that" to fucking crying in about 3 minutes?
間奏のところで本音みたいなの言いまくる前に、もう一度あの家に帰ろうって言うのがもう涙腺崩壊する
They done shattered my fuckin heart, man
I'm legit crying at a song sung by a 42 years old man that chases down another guy in weird costumes to get beaten up by him.
The tears won't stop, help.
セリフが終わったあと優しい歌い方になっていくので本当にうるっときてしまう
「忘れないでよなんて言わねえさ」ってところマジでかっこいい
I'd act all insane too if this is the kind of pain that I need to hide every day
I love the fact that even underneath his mad dog persona, Majima is a good person deep inside especially to those he cares about.
I don't think he's a good person, but a really strong love can make people do some crazy things including turning their back on the only thing they dedicated their life for
MAJIMA WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUCK STOP MAKING ME CRY DUDEEEEEEEEEEE
1:22 that painful scream alone makes this song 1000x sadder than baka mitai.
i really wish majima and makoto couldve been happy together :( seeing how majima didnt even tell makoto his name so he could protect her made me cry ngl. esp after the ending of 0
How the fuck am I so invested in Majima and Makoto's love story? How is it possible that this song moved me so much?
My head canon is that Majima choose this song only to sing his heart out at first but when it finally hits 4:53 he just completely abandoning the lyrics and say what he wants to say to Makoto
😭
😭😭
This is unironically the greatest love song I've ever heard.
0やった後だと、歌進むにつれて真面目な真島さんになっていく感じに聞こえて泣けてきますね…
I want Majima to quit being a yakuza. Escape with Makoto. Or buy their way out. And live somewhere else. My own ending.
I like to think that Majima broke character halfway through and went on a rant as the OG Majima instead
Huh. It appears as though a strange liquid is falling out of my eyes.
