nice video. One more tip for stash sewing, rather than coming up with a color scheme myself, when there is a designer I like doing a qal and I really really want to buy the same fabric they are using, I just go through my stash and match up something I already have with what they are using colorwise. My quilts come out looking just like theirs from a bit of distance and I was able to stick completely with what I already had. Hope that helps someone.
Love these tips Sherri! Registering for the first time your double quilting tip. I did start a mystery quilt and that's a great idea to work through more of my stash by double cutting and sewing. I have many quilts started and always use the leaders and enders for bonus quilts. I started sewing garments a couple of years ago and am mesmerized by both types of sewing. Huge thank you to Chelsi for letting you know how many of us would like to work through our stashes. xxKaren
Another great video! Love the reminder to make a leader/ender quilt. I did this once and loved the result. I spent a few afternoons of cutting my colored scraps and various background scraps into 2” squares (I think it was the length of two Disney videos playing in the background! 😅) Each time I’d be working on some other quilt, I’d start that sewing with a light/dark set from that scrap basket and put that under my needle first, and when I finished I’d put another set under the needle. I didn’t bother sorting or pressing, just tossing them into another small basket. Several months later I had enough to piece into a lovely “postage stamp” quilt. Time to do this again!! Thanks!! Loved all of ❤your 10 tips!
I have taken the double quilt idea to a different level. I now make the front and the back in different designs, so I use up double the stash fabrics. I'm on quilt no 3 using this method. It's working for me.
Great tips, thanks so much! This is quilting year eight for me and during my first year, I loved everything. And I bought everything! Boxes and bags from Fat Quarter Shop and Missouri Star showed up weekly, and now I have a problem. I no longer love everything and have given some away but need to do more of that. This year, I intend to be organized with my WIPs and new projects. I like your tip for making small projects and bought Minki Kim’s big quilters bag pattern after seeing your version. So, Sherri, you have helped me with a path forward. Thanks, as always, for sharing your quilting life with us!
Like the double quilt idea. I often do a small projects and love how they turned out that I can now use Xmas colors or Patriotic colors and use them up.. Thanks!
I never thought about double quilting but that’s an excellent idea ❤
Sherri, thank you for your great ideas. I have really been making an effort to use my scraps. I might be using a fun layer cake or jelly roll and really trying to use some of my stash background fabrics to coordinate with it. Keep up the great videos!
I love the tips! I hope this becomes a mini-series of ideas!
What a great idea! Sherry could show us how she uses her leader/ender scraps while working on some other block or project. ❤
These are great tips, Sherri. Thank you!❤
There’s definitely a movement towards using what fabric you already have, I’ve been quilting for eight years now and I buy new fabrics, when I see a collection I truly love but I have always limited myself to two small drawers for storing my fabric. If there’s no space I’m not buying it, and I never start a quilt if I have another one on the go at the same time, unless one is a totally different technique like EPP, which I can do in front of the to and not with my sewing machine. Back when I was a beginner I was watching loads of RUclips tutorials and some had rooms bursting with fabrics stashed everywhere, and even up against walls or on the floor, and I vowed not to be like that. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, and loads of creative people thrive in that environment, but I like it a bit more ordered and also I hate to spend money on fabric that will then sit for years unused ( and I’ll probably won’t like as much after a few years) , I’d rather spend my money on a collection of fabrics that make my heart race and they will be used in the near future. Fabric is made to be loved and used, not forgotten in a cupboard, and as quilting fabric is very expensive I have to be very selective, there will always be a new line that’s irresistible, I just have to be very choosey. So this year I’ll be too joining the “sew your stash” club, and I’m looking forward to be getting creative with it for maximum results ❤I wonder if loads decide to use their stash if that will have an effect on quilting fabric prices, as it’s shot up recently and in the UK where I live we have to pay taxes on top for Moda, Riley Blake etc
Well said! I'm more likely to have a couple of projects going at once, but I have to have my fabrics and notions in order and I limit my purchases now
Excellent suggestions! ❤
Yes, it is that time of year when we look at our fabric stash. I am presently working on sewing together 2 inch prints with offsets of low volumes. Hopefully with any luck it will turn out halfway decent.. thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips. 👍❤️😊
Very interesting video. Hope I can do some of the 10 tips
I periodically sit down and cut my scraps for house blocks, love making house quilts. I also put larger pcs into a bin for bowl cozies, and lastly large kid prints/colors into a bin for making baby bibs. This way when I'm in a small project mood half the work is done because I swear color selection takes me forever unless I'm pulling from one of these bins!
Great tips! I think I will be utilizing some of those this year, fingers crossed, unless I forget! Ha! Those would make the little time I have to sew more productive. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing these tips, they were very helpful.❤
Really loved this video and I think you came up with some very good ideas for using your stash in a “planned” way #10. Never really thought about that. Thanks so much for your great ideas! 😊
This video is great! Really good ideas
Your bin looks like the same bins I own. I bought several of them when they were on sale at Joann's. My tip would be to use those dividers! If you put the dividers in, the compartments are exactly 5" wide and, therefore, they hold 5" squares perfectly. I stand up my charm packs, along with my 5" leftover squares. I organized by color, theme, designer, flannel, etc. The bins stack nicely also, so I label the fronts. I HIGHLY recommend those bins.
I love the double quilting idea! Great tips!
I have two fat quarter bundles of two of your collections that I will be using next. I love your collections and patterns Thank you ❤️
Wonderful tips, thank you so much Sherri!
Thanks for the tips! ❤ I love using those bins for my projects! They are fabulous for organizing them all! ❤
703. I have these also. They are fabulous. They come with different color handles so I used those to help color code t my fabrics
Great video, Sherri. I have a hard time, too, randomly trying to put a scrap quilt together. I like a plan.
This was so helpful! Loved the idea about double quilting!
Wow! That’s all the stash that you have? I’m in deep trouble, deep in stash!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing more videos on this topic❣️
Thanks so much for this printable. It really does help hopefully clear some of the extra scraps out.
Thanks so much for all these ideas! I have many projects both big and small to do and want to do more of them to declutter my things to do. Many of these ideas will help me accomplish these. I have known of leaders and enders but didn't think about it much but it would work for several projects I have to do. Some are easy and I keep pushing them back to "do later". Now is the time!
Double quilting makes so much sense! Thank you!!
I love the ArtBin double deep containers! I have some that I’ve used the dividers to divide fat quarters by color and others that hold items yet to be sorted! They are awesome storage and organizational tools!!!
Sherri - I gotta say: The one hour hustle sounds completely do-able and productive...ALSO: I took Inventory!!! I could not believe the fabric I have. You talk about Swell Christmas - I have DEER CHRISTMAS! And five kits, AND an additional 400 YARDS minimum (oh my)
....sounds like a successful collection to me 😉
@@melilifabulosa5505 Ha!
Great tips. All of them, sending this to the printer to have it on my wall where i can see them, thank you :)
Some very good tips. I’m currently doing an inventory. Once that’s done I’ll make a list of what I want to do this year.
I love the double quilting idea! ❤
Great tips and inspiration.. Thanks Sherri.
Helpful tips, I especially like the inventory idea and planning out what I want to accomplish this year. Leaders and Enders are a good idea too. Thank you.
Thank you for your advice, a couple of these sparked my thought process! 😊
Excellent advice, thank you.
Thanks so much for all the tips, veery helpful!
Joann Fabrics sells a set in container for the big clear storage box that holds 12 1/2 in blocks
The hour of power originated with Bishop Fulton Sheen back in the black and white tv days, to assist people with ordering themselves properly towards God. I’m not surprised that it has found some positive influence in other areas, particularly in productivity. ❤️
I use those bins with the dividers to store my fat quarters. Perfect size!
Those large bins are 60% off at our local Joann’s!
I like the power hour idea. When I worked as an Administrative Assistant, the best tip I learned was to work the whole day. When you finish your project 15-20minutes before end of shift, grab one more quick task. Rather than getting your coat & visiting, get one quick thing done. I finished a lot of work in those last 20 minutes!
Can we add more days per week, certainly not enough days for everything I would like to get done!!!
I do leaders & enders which become 4 patches but find it hard to use 4 patches in a design. Would love tips for this. I do make a list at start of year and put all the requirements & pattern in labelled tubs which live under my cutting bench.
first Thursday in January
Great ideas and tips. What is the name of the pattern for the quilt hanging on the brown door?
It’s called Good Vibes
Women? Um us MEN sew and quilt too ya know.
Does double quilting cause any issues when sending to long armer?
Do you keep the cut off corners in a project such as magnolia?
I have a bunch of scraps that I just don't want or I've used so much I am tired of that pattern my problem is I don't know who to donate it too
It is true...I have nightmares that my Stash falls on my head and kills me. I need 60 hour days.
Donate where? Can I donate tops ( I have many) and to whom can I donate to?😊😊
Where do I find the WIPS in progress printable? I see the tips printable, not the WIPs,
It’s on her blog in the most recent post.
Can anyone tell me what is the name of the quilt hanging on the back of the brown door and if there is a pattern for it?
It’s called Good Vibes. She has the pattern available in her Etsy shop.
Thank you so much for your response. I appreciate that! 😊
I had the same question thanks
I have boxes of quilt fabric in my sewing closet. I call this my stash. However, I usually spent my time making scrap quilts. I felt like you were substituting the word stash for scraps. I need a something to kick start me to actually using my stash once I am down with my current works in progress. I am disabled and am pretty stuck to Project Linus or lap quilts as anything else is too heavy for me to handle. I'm not trying to be rude just want to move past my scraps and into my stash.
I thought the same thing. To me, "stash" is your entire fabric inventory. The way she was describing the projects, it seems they were focused on using up scraps. I don't have a ton of scraps but I have a HUGE stash. I too am looking for ways to use my stash. I struggle with pulling together individual fabrics from my stash to make a cohesive color palette for a quilt. That's the "using your stash" help that I need. :)
@@laurenm.6287 I hear you. I don't have much of a problem matching up fabrics, but I love scrap quilts. Making the same 12 blocks is utterly boring. I started making blocks out of a book once and each was different but I was using the same 5-6 fabrics and got bored and never finished it. I love have 50-200 fabrics in a quilt. But that would be hard to pull off with my 'stash', but I sure can do it with my scraps. I made 5 blocks today along with trimming a bunch of squares.
