- IMF Slams Biden's Tariffs on Chinese Imports | Vantage with Palki Sharma
A spokesperson for the International Monetary Fund criticised the tariffs announced by US president Joe Biden on imports from China. The IMF has said that trade restrictions will "fragment" the global economy, and that the US will be better served by maintaining open trade policies. The critical comments came days after Biden announced tariffs ranging from 100% for Chinese EVs to 50% for Chinese solar panels. In India, some exporters worry that cheap Chinese goods may flood the Indian market and affect the local industry. Even in January, Indian steel makers had lobbied the Indian government to hike tariffs on steel amid a rise in cheap Chinese imports. Palki Sharma tells you how Biden's tariffs will affect the global economy.

Last year, I visited mainland China. Despite having magnificent infrastructure, affordable clean transportation, and safe, comfortable living, I found the Chinese people I met humble and not inclined to brag about their country. I keep saying that the cities in China are already first-world, but it seems that’s not what they think. They said they are happy with the government, and life is much better compared to the last three decades, but they still consider the country not rich.
Modi, we are the leader of the global south, we are a superpower, we are number one, we have reach space with our rockets🤔🤣🤣🤣
Not rich like billionaires, you mean. lol
Too many people sharing the pie.

US hypocrisy is mind boggling
I see IMF doesn't comment on Chinese limitations to businesses setting up in China to compete in China, the the businesses China bans from operating in China
Chinese subsidies have destroyed our industrial base over the last thirty years. Easy to bash the US…but try looking from our perspective. We’d like to maintain some of our industries. Automotive, mining/steel, computer chips etc. There is great risk with being completely idealistic. Balance is easier…in a peaceful world…I agree. Perhaps the successors to Putin, Xe, Biden…will walk a different path. We can only hope.
China blocks tons of US companies in many ways & requirements…screw the CCP.
Chinese deception and hypocrisy is way bigger than US!
Well said dear 😘 👏
Who knew that communists will be liberal on trade and capitalists will be resorting to protectionism.
Totally agreed. Likewise when comparing between India and China.....In term of development level, technological advancement, people living standard, freedom of education and movement and overall country status.
Talking about India capability to absorb or replace US's demand is pure brag or about India no. One again. Dun India has a sensible journalism by reporting news with more in-depth than unfounded threat of low cost Chinese high-tech products.
Palki is truly a nonsense journalist beloved in India. But firstly you need to stick your head in a hole to see the world and to believe whatever she has reported.😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
China is communist only in name.
So China HEAVILY subsidizing it's entire market to gain all the market share possible while keeping its own economy mostly locked off to outsiders for DECADES is called what exactly? Couldn't be protectionism right?
Compared to USA, the “average” Chinese person is much poorer….
China and India practice protectionism liberally too.
Not sure most American understand tariff is a tax on American, not Chinese.
They don't need to understand. As long as their media say it is good, they will believe.

Exactly. When India rises, it will be next.

Exactly. Indians shouldn't be grinning. If India were actually the 2nd economy instead of China, it would have been the victim of American threats. It happened to 'friend' Japan in the 1980s, with the Plaza Accord. I can tell you, the Chinese wouldn't be laughing at India's misery because they can empathize with former colonized countries.

Here we go again!! Government billing out the auto industry. Or in this case stopping competition from entering the U.S market…
That's a good point. American citizens will pay the tariffs again.

Subsidies? Simple logic. Compare the cost of living in China and that of US is a world apart. Things are far more cheaper in China, so things produced will also be cheaper. The Chinese government need not subsidize it. It's the economy of scale. Automatically it's gonna be cheap.
Because there are far more people in china and more importantly more people to do work for a very cheap price.Like what a garbage man in the US makes is just slightly less than what a junior engineer makes in asia

US subsidizing everything around as well.
No you fool, China needs to import all of the materials to build these cars. China has to use USD to pay for those materials because nobody would take their garbage tofu worthless Yuan. China saves some money using their slave labor and paying manufacturing workers less than $1/hour, but their productivity is extremely low so it's a wash. The only way they can compete with U.S. and western companies is by heavily subsidizing the manufacturing. American companies are far more efficient than their Chinese rivals. Just take Tesla for example. They actually pay their workers far more than BYD and give them benefits that BYD workers can only dream of. Tesla still makes a massive profit on each of their cars sold while BYD loses money on each car without the subsidies from Beijing. Not to long ago they had a price war and Tesla lowered there prices twice and BYD to get the CCP to force Tesla to stop because they couldn't compete with them. Tesla made like 25% profit per car while BYD lost money without the subsidies. And BYD is China's flagship EV company. You can clearly see how Tesla is far superior to BYD in terms of running the company.

CHINA subsidies go to their industries. USA subsidies go to Israel and Ukraine.
The defense industrial complex is looting your country since a long time now
One would ask whose interests does US government serve.
10% goes to the Big Guy
In 1980S they did the same thing to the Japanese car,and we are not surprise they are doing again to the Chinese car.In their mind if they have the advantage they want free market,if they are far behind, they will take every excuse to ban the competitors and protect their own industry. But the truth is even the tariff is 102.5%,the Chinese car is still cheaper and better than the American brand make in U.S and the U.S company still needs to import batteries from China.Only the America consumers hurt.
Problem is, china is a sovereign country with the largest consumer market by far. And of course it has nukes.
The United States imported approximately 70,000 made-in-China Ford, Volvo, GM new vehicles in 2023 (By the way, China exported a total of 4.91 million vehicles in 2023, the United States only accounts for 1.4% of China’s auto export market share in 2023 and almost no chinese brand ). No Chinese domestic car manufacturers have taken the initiative to officially sell their cars in the US. 102.5% tax on Chinese EVs, Go ahead. That must 'hurt 'China a lot, LOL. The US is not the center of the world. 30 094 767 new cars were sold in China in 2023 ( 8.1 million of them were electric vehicles ) , meanwhile only 15 604 278 new cars were sold in the usa (1.4 million were EVs).
The US is expected to subsidize Tesla with $34B between 2023 and 2030. This isn’t even including the other subsidies that Tesla is going to receive from previous policies. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has subsidized BYD between 2018 and 2022 with the whopping massive amount of $ 3.7B.
So the American company got subsidized 10 times more than the Chinese company, out of the $119B in battery subsidies GM got about $21 B, the truth is the US regime is subsidizing their electric vehicles way more than China is.
On November 30, 2023 GM announced record $10 billion stock buyback, more than it’s spending on UAW raises- as its electrification push stalls (Source Bloomberg). That share buyback from General Motors was just q4 of 2023, $10 B, they get $20B in subsidies and they spend $10 B giving that money back to shareholders. The money isn’t going to innovation like it should, the money seems to go these bloated bureaucratic corporations where they take the money give it to shareholders or give it to executive bonuses or management teams that don’t know how to build a car, get so complicated convoluted they just can’t do business competitively anymore.
They don’t need to, instead of being forced to be competitive, being forced to actually spend the money on R&D and producing a high-quality product, they just put a 102.5% tariff on anybody that they cannot compete.
CH.I.NA DOES NOT PLAY FAIR. AT ALL.😂😂 Why talk to those idiots who keep cheating the system and make other countries look like fools? NEVER TRUST the corrupt C.C.p!!!🎉🎉
They just chicken out n have no ideas on how to compete anymore . They killed globalisation

Get a clue
Stupidest strategy ever to make road transport for expensive and keep many incompatible obsolete small batch vehicles in production.
Nobody in the U.S. would ever consider buying a tofu garbage Chinese EV anyways. Even if they sell that garbage at half price. The problem is that China forced Europe into importing their trash EVs and we need to stop that. China's economy has been collapsing for some time now and nobody in China is buying any cars. They are trying to dump that tofu trash in Europe for anything that they can get for them since they already manufactured them... We need to hurry up with this China decoupling. if the tariffs make the products uncompetitive, Americans won't buy it which means the tariffs won't be paid at all. I think that's the idea here. initially it will be, but without open market competition the risk of few companies internal arrangement to create monopolies is too great, prices will still sky rocket
Do American consumers have a choice if all they can access is overpriced American vehicles?
Americans can buy local products for cheaper? If the prices of foreign goods are inflated through tariffs there is no reason for American companies to slash their prices. They will keep their prices as high as possible to match the tariff inflated prices of foreign goods. The objective of American companies is to make as much profits as possible to please their shareholders, not sell as cheap as possible to please the American consumer.

Why would anyone complain about buying cars "too cheap"? Does anyone complain about buying oil "too cheap"? Food? Gold? Anything else?
If China's "subsidies" are actually losing China money, then the obvious correct move would be to buy all of them and re-sell them elsewhere for the "fair" price. If, however, China is not actually losing money on car subsidies and is able to produce cheap cars because of their amazing logistics and manufacturing capabilities, then shut the fork up already.
Miss Sharma provides a balanced view in regard to how US and China provide subsidies. The core conflict is a US that is fighting tooth and nail to retain its current #1 position. The Saving made by buying cheap chinas good is paid in double by countries needing to expand their own defence budget and also supporting the social welfare expenditure in their own countries resulting in job and business losses, unemployment and social uneasiness due to cheap chinese goods. What seems to be a Saving is actually a very lose making proposition in the long run. This has been evident in the last two to three decades where chinese economy has grown many fold while economy of other countries is not growing at the rate it should.

The government should put their citizens' interests first.

India is doing the same thing, I wonder why she is criticizing the US. Every country is trying to protect its local manufacturers.
She didn't criticize US ,maybe she wanted to point out the fact that whn India does same, US start crying in the WTO .PLI scheme of India was heavily criticized by the US .US government even criticized Indian government doing same with laptop imports .
The difference is that some countries admit they have to protect their manufacturers, but the US says that we adopt free trade but accuse the competitors playing unfair game, overcapacity, dumping, .government subsidies, human right, slave labour, genocide. Blatant hypocrite.
She would never have the courage to criticize the US on her show.
US gives tax cut for domestic consumers but China subsidizes production for exports, which is a different approach
Thanks For The Update My Favourite Vantage We Take On The World!
Palki palki....its not subsidy that made ev cheap in China...all the european ceos in China said its competition among the 100 or so companies making evs n labour competence n efficiency that brought the costs of evs from China down.
I thought she was going to say US tariffs on Made in China would accelerate the relocation of factories from China to India, thus paving the way for India to replace China as the factory of the world
Shifting manufacturing isn't that simple job, it takes tens of year for establishing a mega manufacturing capacity
Even your thoughs are being controlled by sea pee pee
India is very slow to respond...Bought a Canon inkjet printer and it's made in VIETNAM, not India.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
She’s starting to know thats not gonna happen
MDM Palki, please tell us how great your country and don't have to worry about others countries
A $20,000 Chinese EV might still be viable in the US if it's decent quality. The nearest price point here are the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt, which start in the 20K range.
😅😅😅 space x owner reaction.. Make in china dump in us
This is a recipe for disaster
Now you understand the meaning of free trade.
Its not butter. It's Palki😂
Don't allow Chinese EVs into India even if they set up factory in India. This will seriously hurt Indian companies.
indian companies must gear up too... more competition = better for consumer.
Only China has ability to establish an EV supply chain for India.

@@rindrind-xp6ly The global south has never seen a better period than the one of US leadership, including China. Doesn’t mean US is entitled to lead like the other commenter states, but it has been an extremely successful period for the global south and the world as a whole. The US government just love a good old fashioned inflation.
It's unfair but it's not illegal.
What about US subsides on computer chips? Is that illegal?
Palki Sharma needs to visit China and drive the EV cars instead of riding a bike cycle in India. What is about ? China ? USA ? India ? Or Palki ? I know Palki love China and Chinese people. 😘😘 2 Palki.
EV adoption is extremely low in India due to the scarcity of charging stations and above all, due to poor standards of living. India has one of the lowest car ownership rate in Asia
EV adoption in India is actually not too bad. It is just it is 2 wheels instead of 4 wheels.
In Brazil we have many BYD cars and we are already experiencing reduction of pollution, and our air quality is getting better.

Forget about EVs.

US tariffs against Chinese goods means that American businesses and consumers are paying higher prices than other countries, thereby handicapping them against their competitors.
