  • Explore the mysterious archeological site of La Quemada, found about 45 minutes outside of Zacatecas City. The site includes a juego de pelota ballcourt, a citadel, Salón de Columnas, and the Votive Pyramid. The site was believed to have been attacked and burned hence the name "la ciudad quemada", which means the burnt city.

Really want to visit that city. I think you said intermediate Spanish was necessary, but would basic Spanish with a phrasebook work?

I recommend intermediate Spanish for Zacatecas state. There are hardly any English speaking tourists here, so even if the locals speak some English - they aren’t able to practice it here much. There are a lot of areas where you might not have phone service (ie La Quemada) or might be cumbersome to pull out your phone to use google translate. That said, they do have a hop on hop off bus with English commentary and they do have guides you can tour with.
