Easily my album of the year thus far. Masterful arrangements, extremely varied and well written. Love her voice more than ever. "Vasquez" was actually a highlight for me because it reminded of the winding electric pianos on Herbie Hancock's stuff in the early '70s. The synths in the song are fantastic as well, like firecrackers going off underwater or something. Glad you recognize how excellent this is as a whole.
@@thesilenttreatment6837 yes, thank you for saying this, this is exactly and precisely what I meant when I was saying that to pimp a butterfly was better. Not that, you know, to pimp a butterfly is easily one of the greatest albums of all time and this isn’t. No, not that at all. It’s gotta be that I think that women can’t make albums as well as men
@@ldhdjzjjaklzjdbd6610 yeah that was definitely a weird response to your comment, but i don't think that it is impossible for someone to like this album more than tpab especially if rap isn't really their thing or something like that.
So far I'm actually really feeling this album. The esoteric lyrics and weird but wonderful production work are extremely well done. I don't normally listen to this kind of music; past me would've wrote this off as lofty, empty indie jargon. But your channel has really inspired me to go head on to a lot of different music and to tackle new experiences. While some of the album does feel a bit too 'cloudy' and uninteresting in some parts, it's really growing on me! Thanks again Fantano :)
This was my album, shared with Vulnicura by Björk, of 2015. They both share the number one position. Its one of the very few albums I also own on Vinyl, since I only reserve Vinyl for the absolute best.
I think this is a really good album and a refreshing change to what is around in the music world at the moment. This seems to be an era where a lot of female songwriters are pushing boundaries (St Vincent,AnnaCalvi,Bjork, etc) and you can add Have you in my wilderness among them
Hmmm…Vasquez is my favorite song on this album, and also maybe the most straightforward. Julia sings-as from beyond the grave-in the voice of the title character, a 19th Century California "bandit," telling of how he was tracked down & killed without ever getting the chance to explain himself. And that's it. Yet it leaves you (well, me anyway) wondering about the guy. IMO it's Julia's way of saying, "If you're looking for a confessional from me…ain't gonna happen. But keep wondering if you like."
Anthony has been so much more gracious with reviews compared to his reviews of music back in 2011-2013. Either that or music is just better now in his opinion.
...also: I really like the abrupt endings and then STRAIGHT to the next song, reminds me of a Lou Barlow solo album. I also think she sounds kinda like early Laurie Anderson on Vasquez... This is yet another stellar female artist masterpiece this decade, up there with 'Have On On Me' and 'Strange Mercy'.
I completely agree with your review. Instead of feeling like I was in clouds, I felt like I was in a beautiful green field. I'm going to listen to it next summer at the park.
Vasquez is the best song on this album, WTF are you talking about man? Also, the style of music is definitely NOT dream-pop. It's chamber pop / art pop and to a lesser degree ambient pop.
I love this album! Arrangements, production, her voice. It totally does it for me if i'm in the right mood for it. I think Ekstasis is the best, but that changes from time to time. Loud City Songs is good too ... and i LOVE Vasquez. That song took me sooo far away =) Good Review, nice opinion ;P
the song "Vasquez" is maby the best song on this fantastic art album .., just fantastic that it excist in these times where living in now .., we need this as music food and love

Loud City Song was one of my favorite Lps of 2013; Have You In My Wilderness is a beautiful, lush record that will be my fav of 2015... I like the way Julia pulls listeners in with song stories of characters in books and paintings, I think it gives us an abstract version of her personality without being so direct. Betsy on the Roof is MY favorite track as well! Thanks for reviewing!
So glad I have your channel. I literally spent "10 seconds" on a Dose Of Buckely's site and was hit in the face by racists and sexists comments. Ugh. Glad you maintain professionalism. :)
Szymon-Tigersapp(released Aug 20). This is a sad request because the artist died of depression in 2013 and his family helped wanted his first solo album to be released so everyone will know how great he was and could've been. I would like to know you're opinion of it.
+W Alex that song is so scary... wth is goin on ..is she a mermaid? is she a fish ?is she getting raped killed in the end? fantano doesn't talk about that track...
I really love this after my first few listens, but I doubt It'll be as great as Loud City Song on future listens. Thanks for the great review, and yes, Marble Index is a fantastic record as well.
I'll have to check out this album! Haven't heard of Julia until this review. Also, please review So There by Ben Folds. It's his newest release and he took a swing at mixing classical and pop in a way that he hasn't done before. I think you'd enjoy it.
I am only here for one reason, and that is to tell you to consider reviewing Kylesa's EXHAUSTING FIRE....I have never seen you do a Kylesa review, for which I cannot seem to understand.....
I think this album grew on me, but does anyone else feel like the vocal production is a lil gross? You can hear all the sticky mouth sounds Julia makes, it's a little too close for comfort :/
+Melvin “Mithrog” Slog That Black Breath was crazy! I hope it doesn't get tossed off because of Deafheaven. They're both great, but Black Breath outdid themselves.
just discovered this record. I love her so much it is so beautiful that I want to cry

Thank you Fantano, for introducing me two years ago to Julia Holter. Really fucking good discography.
I love the outro on "Silhouette".

2. Fetty Wap
3. Caracal

Not a fan of Fetty but I would like to see that review.
Freshsink950 Me neither but I still thought it was a good album for a debut. Also Caracal was really good
Ey, Anthony. You should definitely check out Holter's interview on NPR for some more input on her lyrics.
You actually thought this was better than LCS? This is the sound of an artist going almost completely pop.
Hauntingly beautiful
you made a really good case for this record. probably gonna check it out.
