Royal Tea Scones | Queen's Castle Cooking

  • Today we made the scones that were a part of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s daily tea service. We have it on the authority of Darren McGrady, former royal chef, that these scones were served religiously each day, alternating between fruit scones or plain. McGrady suspected that the Queen didn’t actually like scones. Because while she insisted on them as part of her tea, she never, ever ate them. Instead, at the end of her daily tea, the Queen would take a scone and crumble it onto the floor for the corgis who seemed to quite like them. Serve warm with lots of butter or cool and split them in half and fill with strawberry preserves, clotted cream, or whipped cream.

Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

    Well done on the baking!
Strange that the Queen never ate them? Cheese scones are great as well! My favourite is fruit scones and clotted cream is definitely worth it for a treat.

Try putting scones on baking tray in a circle. One in middle then others around it, just touching each other. They will rise up more than outwards and ones in the middle have no crusty edge.

Scones should be served with strawberry jam and Cornish cream. Whipped cream is too light and lacks the flavour of Cornish cream. The scones looked good, well done.

Thank you. I did serve them with strawberry jam as well as raspberry jam. Clotted cream as well as whipped cream was recommended by Chef Darren McGrady. I’ll look up the Cornish cream.

Hi, I've been following your journey as Chatelaines, and it is so nice to see, that you are doing well. I just wanted to give some well meant advice. I hope, that is ok... I love the flowerbeds and urns on your terrace, but you should try and ask a local gardensupply if they could give advice, so that you have consistant flowering during the seasons. Perennial flowers would minimize the work. Bulbs are beautiful, but they are really the last thing to add. Paeonies are gorgeous, but they don't flower for long. Roses might be a great addition and would look gorgeous, fx, and the gardensuppliers can tell you which ones thrive in your area. And roses would really suit your fairytale Chateau!! 😊 Also, since you are going for such a royal theme, are you planning on adding more antiques to the decor? Your style looks almost scandinavian, which makes sense😊 But the good thing about that, is that it blends very well with beautiful antiques!😁

      Hej 🇩🇰
Yes we have spoken to local gardeners and taken their advice. And yes we do have roses on the plan for those flowerbeds along the stone walls.
Regarding the Dekor of the rooms, you might have seen earlier videos, where Karen is talking about how we want to redecorate the rooms, hallways and basically every room of the castle. The way it is now is how we took over from the previous owners. The only Scandinavian inspired room will is our private living room. I have some furniture and lamps in there.
For the future we will start to change things into a more castle-like setting.
      Thank you for watching. Bo

I’ve approached a garden center 30 minutes away (none local) and the help was minimal. But everything you discuss is on my mind, especially the roses. 🌹
