      I did... top of my right butt cheek all the way down to my toes in my right foot. I did not take pain medication... I used to abuse Opiates many years ago from an MCL injury..I was afraid to get addicted to those horrible things again.. so I roughed it out for a year and a half... it was a rough time... one of my worse experiences in life. Some days the pain was literally unbearable and I would just bounce between being really angry and crying all day.

    Hi! Glad you have recovered! I have had continuous struggle with sciatica but 2 ms back it got worse and I got it in both of my legs. Most excruciating 2 ms. I am scheduled for surgery in 10 days now but the thing is all of a sudden this weekend it has improved. I still get pains but tolerable. I am confused now if I should go forward with surgery or if I should wait some more? Because I got the date for surgery so hard I don’t want to delay it only to end up having pain again but I also don’t want to have surgery unnecessarily if I improve. Also I am not sure if this is just a momentary improvement. I am sorry if I don’t make any sense but I would appreciate any insight really! Just confused.

    • @bedbackandbeyond
      @bedbackandbeyond  7 месяцев назад

      It’s actually something I hear a lot on the forums. People suddenly start to feel better right before the surgery. I don’t know if it is a mental trick or not. Some people wait and some people decide that don’t have the time to lose. If a disc is going to heal on its own, that usually takes 12 weeks. It’s always best to get the doctor’s opinion, but in the end it is up to you. Do you want to cancel the surgery in the hopes that the disc is shrinking? How long would you have to wait to reschedule of this is just a fluke and your severe pain returns again?

Highly recommend

    I had an L5/S1 surgery this time last year..in Feb.. went well.. until it herniated again 3 weeks in, and I spent two weeks stuck lying on the floor because I couldn’t stand or sit at all.. waiting for surgery number 2…
    after the second op things were pretty good.. but I wasn’t taking any chances.. walking a few times everyday I could..
    pain was pretty minor after op.. off the pain meds after three days and would take an anti inflammatory whenever I felt I needed it (especially after a gig.. I’m a guitarist)
    After a few weeks I was able to sit longer, walk longer.. every now and then I would get some mild pain.. and still today I get a little grab here and there but overall I’m able to do more and more..
    I still walk about 30-40 mins everyday
    and only now am I entertaining the possibility of a jog.. was very very cautious the second time around.. took no chances.
    everyone is different in their experience and pain levels.. it really depends on how long and how bad you’ve had the problem.. (after 6 months of physio and sciatic pain.. I was fortunate enough to be offered surgery when I presented to hospital after feeling the disc literally pop in my back Valentine’s Day of 2022..) ouch!
    I’m glad I did!! Couldn’t imagine being stuck with pain like that for months or years.. and I feel sorry for those that do..

      Wish I knew.. probably poor core strength which is likely what led to the initial herniation..

      but daily walking and focus on how I’m engaging my core has really helped to mitigate any issues..

    I've so tired of on and off chronic pain since the initial injury in the mid '90s. PT hasn't helped, pain meds just mask the discomfort, and I don't like how I feel taking the variety I've tried over the years. For the most part I can do what I want, but not without consequences after. I'm seeing my general practitioner tomorrow again, I'll hopefully get referred to a specialist for a permanent fix. The constant discomfort is getting old. I was hesitant to press for surgery 25 years ago, but there have been significant positive changes with spinal surgery since.

Next week: you should be able to increase your walks from five minutes to ten minutes. Sitting no more than 30 minutes. Be sure to be log rolling in and out of bed, AND always be sure to activate your abs and glutes when you move to support your spine.

      Yes, unfortunately the pain in legs can last for some time after the surgery for some people. The nerve needs time to heal and will even sometimes send a jolt of pain down the leg during the healing process. Also there is post surgery inflammation that can happen several weeks after surgery that makes the pain worse again. My doctor gave me steroids to help when it happened to me.

      Hi. I recently had minimally invasive lamamectomy/discectomy L4-L5-S1. I am now entering Day 5 post-op and have taken the first of my 3xday pain meds (percocet) waiting to see what the day brings. I was sent home after 1 night: advised not to sit for more than hour at a stretch and then to take short walks with Nordic sticks up and down the passage in our apartment block. The immediate post-op pain was intense, mainly in the area of the surgery i. e. my buttocks and upper legs. I still have some tingling in my lower left leg and less in my right leg. The most notable effect is that my left "flop foot" has completely gone. I am not limping anymore and (despite the pain) manage a good few minutes walking every day. I will be doing home physio before hopefully returning to a more planned routine after a month. I'm told the first 2 weeks are the worst - and yeah, they are pretty dire. But the pain pre-op was worse. One is always tempted to think that the previous pain, without the op, would have been bearable. That's a fallacy. This pain will dimish and disappear. I also lost my appetite for a number of days but that can't be too bad (!) Roll on Days 5, 6, 7...and beyond. You channel is really helpful. Thank you.😮

      Yes! We put a step stool and a high back chair next to my bed. The step stool made it easier to get up and down from the bed. The chair was used like a railing to help push myself up. You can order a medical step stool with handle from Amazon but just make sure it only has one handle.

I have told him since then several times that I have absolutely no leg pain and that all my pain is coming from my lower back, right above the pelvis/ass area. He has recommended me to speak with his colleague about a Microdiscectomy but, from all the research I've done... this surgery is for people who DO have leg pain/sciatica.

    Hello and thank you for your video and welcoming questions! I am 5 weeks post op L4/L5 at 2.5 weeks I got the pain you mentioned but only in the morning. It has continued. Each morning I wake up with the tightness going down my outer thigh. It does subside as the morning goes on and when it started I spoke with the surgeon and he said because it's not lasting he doesn't think I re-herniated anything he thinks it is swelling and fluid. Do you think that this can be normal for me and a part of my healing? I am so confused because the mornings feel like the worst part of the herniation and I was fine for 2.5 weeks only needing tylenol for two days post op?

    • @bedbackandbeyond
      @bedbackandbeyond  2 года назад +1

      It is certainly possible. Swelling can cause pain, and the healing process is a lot longer than you expect. Are you waking up with a stiff back? I have found that when my back gets stiff, it will trigger some nerve discomfort for me, even to this day. Stretching and doing the physical therapy moves taught to me always helps.

    thank you so much for this video its really helpful to know someone has gone through the same experience as you. You have answered a lot of my questions I was thinking about! Is it okay to twist to wipe yourself and wash your bottom if you can’t get assistance from others during the first week of recovery?

    • @bedbackandbeyond
      @bedbackandbeyond  2 года назад

      I think it depends on the amount of twist. Before your surgery, take note of how little of a twist you can do in order to reach to clean. I was surprised at how little I had to move. You can also ask the surgeon about amount of twist that is allowable. A full twist is obviously a no no. I was so scared that I had my husband cleaning me at first. I wish I had gotten a bidet attachment for my toilet. So many people rave about them and fall in love with them. It might be worth considering just for ease of mind.

      Hi Michael. I'm going on 2 years with multiple bulging discs, L4 and L5-S1 in particular. I know all about the various butt and leg pain. You should consider daily postural or muscular imbalances that are preventing your healing. I started working my core like crazy, made minor changes in how I walk, sit, and do menial tasks, and that helped improve my pain considerably. I just hiked 20 miles carrying 40 pounds on my back this weekend with very minor discomfort, as where 6 months ago, everything made me relatively umcomfortable.
      My doctors have told me that if I can tolerate the pain and stay dedicated to daily rehab for a potentially extended time period, that I should not remotely consider surgery.

      @cynth bird lover Don't be!! If your pain is anything like mine was, the surgery and recovery is a walk in the park!! I had severe sciatica that started in June of 22. Had PT, 2 epidurals, and an MRI. Surgeon spoke to me after my second MRI (September) which served as my pre-op visit. Pain came back in it's terrible glory in January. I had to be carried out of church because I was unable to walk (how embarrassing...). Fortunately, by the grace of God, I was able to get my surgery preauthorized by my insurance and had my surgery much quicker than expected due to a cancellation of someone else's surgery. After surgery I IMMEDIATELY felt better. When my wife asked me how I felt, I told her "I feel great!" I was on pain meds for about 2 days. I have been very careful about the "No BLT" (bending lifting twisting). Bought a device to help me get my socks on, and a long handled shoe horn. I am able to work from home, so I was back "in the office" 3 days after my surgery. Had my 2 week check today and have been doing fine. Incision is healing nicely. I had a recurrence of pain 1 week after my surgery, but it sounds like it is pretty common, after reading a lot of posts here. I have some minor discomfort in the morning and find it hard to sleep sometimes, but those are such minor inconveniences compared to what the pain was like PRE surgery. If you are in severe pain, get the surgery done! Recovery is EASY if you do what you are told to do!!

      I “threw out my back” and the pain traveled to my butt for a time. Standing up would cause a sharp pain in my butt that would go away after a moment. Just had my surgery done a few days ago. Suffered from back pain for years but regular visits to my chiro and some muscle relaxors always helped cleared it up.
    This year was the absolute worst though. Had excruciating pain running down my right leg like having a bug hunting knife stuck in my back and another slicing down my leg. Got an MRI which showed two herniated discs about 8-9mm. Relapsed FOUR times in 6 months with each one getting worse pain that lasted longer so went for the surgery after trying everything else.
    Now Im in excruciating post op pain from being sliced open but that horrible nerve pinch and aching that kept me from getting any sleep seems to be gone.
