Scotland Road Trip - Part One - Common Skate in Oban

- This has been on the backburner for quite a while now. Finally managed to get a good few days off work, packed the van with everything I own and pointed it north! Not really got a plan as such other than ultimately getting up to Harris & Lewis, with stops in Oban and Skye on the way.
Part One see's us try for a common skate from the shore. Something that I've wanted to do for a very long time. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it!

Second time watching this video just as enjoyable as first time , as a Scot and fellow angler it's made me make catching a skate of shore my 2025 goal.

Brilliant video again. First the Tope and now a Skate - you could catch a fish in my back Garden and I don't even have a Pond 😂😂😂. Next time you pass Cumbria give me a shout and we'll go and catch a Hammerhead on the first cast in 1 foot of water. Looking forward to Toping again in Wales - soon be here. Was down at weekend but weather not the best. Keep the videos coming.

I live in Connel, and newly took up fishing. ( Kind of. No one catches fish when I am there for some reason…)

Cheers Matthew. Won’t be long before we’re out on the tope hunt once again. Target is a 50 from the shore 🤞🏼 The Sonik was just fine. Must admit I was a little worried I was slightly under gunned, but never felt worried during the fight and landed it within the hour 💪🏼

Fáilte gu Alba. That's one of my favourite routes to take on a fishing road trip. I normally stop at Taynuilt on Loch Etive, then take the ferry from Oban to Mull, then an island hopper ticket to Skye to fish the HRF paradise that is Neist Point lighthous, before breaking out the fly rods for a session on one of the countless wee rivers and burns that the Inner Hebrides have to offer. Looking forward to part 2.

We stayed at Oban for a few days and never knew about the Skate. We fished small baits ..not even a bight .....but we're going back VERY soon ...after 23 years.

Hey, been having a crack at skate fishing around Oban but I can only really cast out 50 meters max only getting in about 60ft of water with the up and over rigs I use, how far were you casting here? Nice video and even nicer fish 🎣
I can probably put the up and over about 100yds on a good day. It’s all about finding a mark with deep water that you can comfortably hit from the bank. Or get yourself a little inflatable and tow em out! 😉
Great video again..what an epic battle.. What size fixed spool and braid were you using?? I am thinking of using a shimano 14000 with 80lb braid straight through!

Not lucky. Skate are dead easy if, you choose the right mark, which you did. Well, they're dead easy to hook, anyway! Congratulations, just the same. Nice when, a plan works first time.

Cheers Hakan! Thanks for watching mate. Yeah the rod was the SKS 14ft. Think it’s right on the limit for skating, but landed in under an hour so up to the task 👌🏼

Are you using a Fox Reel mate? I'm looking for a new one to add to my Penn but needs to be strong with no flex when winding in.
It’s a Diawa Emblem Z. Carp reel but a big spool capacity 👌🏼

@MB Outdoors Cheers buddy! Yes, we've got tope marks marked ready for the get go, just waiting on the reports to start flooding in... mind you, wouldn't it be good to be the first report. I'm thinking if going flatty fishing next, stock up while I'm there 🤔 As for the skate, we definitely need one. No doubt it'll be next year. If your ever up for it, let's do a colab up in Scottland on the skate with myself and John.
Great vid, but on retrieval dude, hold the rod higher angle, more pressure easier. You're to low to the water.
Nope. He did it perfect. If you have the rod too high when it releases from the bottom it could give you slack and loose the fish

I just want to know where in Oban this is 😅 fished kinlochleven and hooked a skate last weekend but it bit through 80lb line
Not my mark to share I’m afraid. Was very kindly put on to it by a local skipper friend of mine, so wouldn’t like to give it up. Good luck in your shore skate quest 🤞🏼
