If you're out there hunting turkeys and using this box call, we want video.
I am. And you will get it.
We kind of baby sat my brother-in-laws pet turkey while we found him a new home after my BIL house burned down. We have a 6 ft fence around our yard but everyone in the neighborhood could hear him. It was hilarious hearing all the turkey hunters for 3 blocks calling him. Most of the time he didnt respond. He got to be an old pet because he was smart. 😊
Nice! I'm headed to Michigan next weekend for a turkey hunt. Maybe I can squeeze one of these calls in between all the dang planter boxes I have to make. 🤣
Lol. Get to work!
When we study sound in class I usually bring in my turkey calls to illustrate the idea of vibration and how the sounds are formed. It's pretty funny to see a kid use a call for the first time. It might be nice if I build a few of my own so I'm not worried about them breaking the ones I paid for! Thanks for what you do!
That sounds just as good as any of the store bought over many years. NICE
I didn’t know you had this channel. Glad it was on my feed.
We are just getting it going. It took off a lil faster than expected. Glad you found it!
Nicely done, Brother! You have inspired me to make a train load of turkey calls. I live in the Midwest and I have even had wild turkeys in my backyards. Again, kudos and thanks for the video.
Pale Horse Outdoors with Matthew Peech, Your videos always make me happy, so I subscribed!
I hand turn pot calls on a lathe and now want to explore making box calls, your video is definitely a big help! Would love to see a hunting video with it
Just wait... there's one in the works.
I think it’s sounds pretty dam good for a homemade call those yelps are on point! I’m a woodworker and a taxidermist I build custom bases for animal mounts, make all my own plaques for European skulls, I’m definitely adding some box calls to my products here. Great build man 🤙🏼
My turkey hunting brother wanted to find out if I could make him a box call. Now, I know.
Awesome video. Thanks. Love turkey hunting and never even thought about making my own box call till I saw this. Now it's on my list!
Cool project and a gift idea for my brother who is a hunter and very art's & craftsy!
Oh he would love it.
Going to make a few for some friends that hunt. Thanks for the video.
Have fun! They will love it.
nice box call .my only problem with box calls and slate or glass is the humidity in the mornings or just dampness would make them not sound good they sound great in your living room when its dry . the mouth call was my go to if you can master that its a winner .
Definitely going to make a couple of these. We have wild turkeys coming through our neighborhood all the time and a few people including us feed them
Oh for sure! Would be awesome if you could hit the call and watch them fan out and strut.
@@Pale-Horse-Outdoors only thing is we can't hunt them, so we're fattening them up for nothing lol
I made a box call several years ago, cedar box with moradillo top, I used thin slats a thicker bottom and ends, it came out great, sounds awesome and calls in them big ol gobblers.
It's a great feeling!
That is awesome! It is a great feeling.
Sounds good n looks good .
I enjoyed watching and learning could you go into more detail about how to tune the calls?
Thanks for my new next level hunt! Got two weeks to find time to make one with wood from my mill.
I'm not a turkey hunter, even though they are in my front yard from time to time. I have some poplar laying around that I wasn't sure what to do with, but I will definitely give this a try. Thanks for the videos. Keep up the good work, and God bless you!
Called one in using my box call that i made a couple years ago. Great video
Pretty awesome feeling isn't it. Thanks!
Those are so cool
Thanks!
Great video! Sounds awesome to me!! Unfortunately, I do all my turkey hunting at Costco!!! Blessings!!!
Lol. It's a lot cheaper that way. I just look for an excuse to get into the woods.
I have never seen one of these this is so awesome.
Thanks! You need to make one!
Very cool! Looking forward to your new channel
Awesome job Sir!! Sounds great too!👏 💯
Good little project, very calming video.
This is great! Can’t wait to try this out.
Have fun!
Awesome..
OOOOO yeah haha , sounds pretty cool. Will be making some of these. Very cool

New subscriber.
My oldest son is going turkey hunting soon.
Perfect timing.
Welcome!
Definitely going to give this a try!
For sure! It's a fun build that's a nice break from the "norm"
@@Pale-Horse-Outdoors do you think red cedar would work for the box?
Very much enjoyed this video! Thank You for sharing, looking forward to more!
I thought it sounded great! Thanks for this diy video, I will be trying it for sure.
Great Job and so easy... I'm going to make one. Good Luck!
Get to it! Yea it's a lot easier than people think. You too!
I called in a nice one using a 24”Irwin Quick Grip Clamp.
I find that alder wood makes the best sound
Nice. I'm sure it feels good to get a Turkey with a homemade call. Heard turkeys called in with some pretty questionable calling and they didn't seem to mind, I'm sure the sound is fine.
need some box call chalk , the white chalk usually has some oil in it , but hey sounds great
thanx
thanx
Great video! I love the idea of making your own call. How do you go about tuning it? I’m guessing it’s just sanding in inside of the pocket (making the walls thinner), sanding the lip of the box and or the top underside where it meets the box lip?I noticed one side didn’t sound as good. What I mean by that is the push stroke sounded different from the pull stroke. Is this pretty normal?
Yes. Each side will need to be tuned. And you're right, you tune by sanding the walls, rounding the edges and with the screw.
Awesome job my friend!!

Thanks for the sub!
Any other ways to cut out the center of the bottom? I have all the tools but a drill press. Thinking theyre oughta be a way to use a router
Good job. Does it still sound right if you glue the wood together for the bottom of the call? I don't have a thick piece.
Yea they sound good. All box calls you buy from the big stores have glued on bottoms.
Inspiring. Have you ever tried using a polyurethane finish? I have an old call I bought years ago that had a heavy finish and I feel like it adds to the sound of the call. I use it mid day when I want to strike something and its killed a many a lonely longbeards. Id be interested to see how different finishes compare
Do you think Alder would be good for the box with something harder like cherry for the top?
Great video. I always enjoy watching your videos very easy to follow, just like your plans. Are you going to be putting this box call on your etsy page? i know i would buy the plans with templates. Great video again!!
Thanks! I won't be putting them on there. Just get creative... you can easily pull this off!
My dad was ranked #3 in the fwta under Niel Cost...there a bit more nice than these and are tuned to where the turkeys pretty much run at you.Ive been making them for few years now since he has passed....SWEET THANG TURKEY CALLS.
That turkey call will hunt! What would a person charge for a call like that?
Thanks! Honestly I have no clue. It would depend on the wood that you used. If you found some reclaimed wood to use you could probably get a good price for a custom made call.
Hey Matt, any suggestions on how to get the curve on the striker if you don't have a belt sander yet? Living in a huge turkey hunting area, this would be a great smalls item for me.
Will also make great gifts for my brother-in-law and nephew who are big turkey hunters.
You could remove the edges with a table saw and then hand sand it. Or just use a regular cordless sander.
Do you sell the turkey box calls?
We don't... Yet. But def something that we would consider.
You made it look easy . Kick a## video. Love calling them birds in tho.
How much are you leaving on the bottom ?
BiII €ooper wouId be proud of this channeI!! 🤔🤨
I'm disappointed it's not going to be a big turkey whistle🏴
I wish I could make it that easy... hmmm
Totally enjoyed this video !
Glad you enjoyed it!
