- Fishing is Expensive.. and I have been spending a lot of money recently on bait. Today, we're going to try to catch our own bait before we go fishing! I did not expect to catch this bait though.. What kind of fish would possibly eat a bait like this?? I did not expect for this to happen..

It all depends, if it’s a spur of the moment I always keep my fishing gear on me so I’ll catch my own. But if I’m planning to be out there I’ll buy my bait and just chill out there till it’s time to go

Those little baitfish you caught early on are called Mojarra (moo-hara). They are great bait, bigger ones are good for snook.
The really big ones are also delicious deep fried.
Yep he missed out there big time! Good sized little ones! I’ve caught 30+ inch snook on those little mojarras 💪🏾 I usually use artificial though it’s a lot more convenient
The whiting he caught was perfect live or for that size great cut bait for the surf this time of year! Been catching giants on whiting with my spinfisher 5500
Was gonna bring this up but glad to see you already have him covered! Mojarra are top tier for some mangrove snappers too!
I’m from the keys now living in Delaware they have different names for things but here it’s not a baitfish it’s actually a prized fish and they love fishing with sand fleas 21:37
I'm just getting into fishing (primarily pier fishing) and your videos really have given me confidence to just go out there and have fun! I used to get so intimidated going out and looking at everyone with their fancy setups and equipment but it turns out a lot of the guys out there are always so helpful and have such good vibes, like your videos! In the beginning when you threw back those two silver fish: Those were mojarras, or sand perch. Amazing snook bait, I caught my PB on a live one about the same size as the one you caught. Everything devours them but most people use the bigger ones for big snook. The ones I caught I used for big trout. It pained me to see you throw them back but now you know for next time you can use them as bait. That and you should try using an egg sinker with a carolina rig and cast at the beach or near the pier with live bait. Or you can try a popping cork too/float. I hope this paragraph helps but I just wanted to let you know for next time. Tight lines
Yeah bro same. I totally agree they do make awesome bait for snook and tarpon. I usually catch a few mixed in with pin fish when cast netting around docks. And they taste pretty good too if you catch the bigger ones.
@@ezekielcapps7155 to be fair I caught more trout on pinfish than mojarras, whereas I caught more snook on mojarras than pinfish
A little tip when looking for sand fleas is feel for soft spots in the sand right by the water, the sand will be slightly easier to dig through, then use a net to scoop them up while digging

If you want sand fleas get a sand flea rake. they work really well.
So sweet! You're one of the only big youtubers (that I have seen) which have fished so close to where I live lol. Funny how I just had dinner where you caught the mantis shrimp just last weekend! I went solo offshore over the weekend for the 1st time ever, and "hot" is an understatement. I had to come back in, less than 2 hours of fishing later, because I was worried about heat stroke. I highly recommend a baitrunner spinning reel by penn. I used to never believe in it thinking it was always easier to tighten the drag myself. Fishing on long island I would always mess up with a big striper on the hook and either tighten the drag too tight and snap or too loose and lose the fish. Especially fishing with a sliding sinker rig with a circle hook, its been super easy just reeling down and having the drag already set to where I want it.

A spot with a bunch will have birds and dead sand fleas everywhere on shore as well cheers 🍻

I seen sea fleas in you camera shot. When the water receded watch for the holes in the sand with bubbles coming out and dig there right away or sometimes you can actually see them kicking sand out of that hole. That camera shot of you digging for them I could them digging right underneath you.

Mantis shrimp are known as Thumbsplitter shrimp in the aquarium industry because they will literally split your thumb. They've also been known to break the glass on glass aquariums. Very powerful little creature.

I highly recommend watching My Friend Steve's videos. He fishes all around Florida, mainly the Keys. "Key West Kayak Fishing"
The bait you let go were mojarra, those were perfect size for some mangroves !
How about a video doing surf and/or pier fishing with bass gear. Out here in California a lot of guys use bass rods and baitcasters for inshore fishing.

Where in Florida are you? If you're close enough I'd suggest heading down to Jupiter inlet and trying your luck there. The water is clear on incoming tides and it's loaded with fish.

For the sand fleas, they create a little V shape in the water as the wave is retreating. Usually there will be a bunch of them in one spot and you'll see the little ripple V shape where the wave ocean as it's going back

Mantis shrim are awesome. I have a pet peacock mantis shrimp named Punchy.
Surf sinker with the metal wires will hold you in one spot. Steel leader 2 hook set up. Wade out almost arm pit deep and send it.

Use bigger hooks and bigger baits. If any sport fish pick up your bait they’re gonna choke it with that small of hook.
