  • After receiving many requests to talk more about interpretation, I'm sharing with you most of the interpretation module from my Masterclass on how to play William Gillock's "Legend" from his "24 Lyric Preludes in Romantic Style. As I mention first thing in this video, ideas about interpretation change with every single piece and for every individual student, but I think that the ideas I present can be synthesized into many helpful tidbits, even if you aren't studying this particular piece. But, if you DO want to learn this piece...

Charles, FABULOUS…..a Master of a Master Class. I cannot start any piece of music now without trying to devine the feelings that the composer wanted to convey in each phrase (or for that matter, the feelings that I will try to convey). To an experienced pianist, maybe painting a mental picture of a piece before you start is obvious. For those of us who are less experienced, this type of thinking is transformative.

Thanks so much, Louise! This type of lesson is really what makes the difference between “knowing” the piece and KNOWING the piece. It’s not truly music until there’s meaning behind the notes being played!

Thank you for all of this emotion. It’s what turns a song into music. Absolutely a gift! This student is grateful! Happy Easter!
