This is such great work. Youre one of the few youtubers who have come to SA and truly understand it with nuance. I dont like the videos that paint SA as some black utopia which a lot of Western youtubers do. As a black South African this is demeaning and shows how out of touch their experiences with the real lived experience of the majority of South Africans on the ground are. The dollar and pound obviously affords certain privileges that average South Africans could only dream of and thus their experience of the country is shaped by the false reality that is granted by their Western privilege.
On the other hand, other youtubers (mostly white) love using SA as poverty p*rn and exploit our sometimes harsh living conditions and crime rate to push a narrative about a formerly "functional" white supremacist country that is now falling into tatters because of black rule. That is also very demeaning.
Thank you for using your background knowledge and expertise to actually paint a grounded, well-balanced view of the country. Siyabonga.

Just a quick note: If you're seeing milky water, don't worry-this doesn't indicate contamination. In South Africa, our water quality is very high. The milky appearance is usually due to tiny air bubbles, often caused by changes in water pressure after an outage. If you let the water sit for a minute, it will clear up on its own.

South Africa is not the most unequal country in the world. We are probably the most misunderstood though. Those squatter camps you are seeing is not the reality. People move from one province to the other demanding services. They want houses. They want jobs. They get jobs but don't improve their lives. They want pity. How can you work for 20 years earning a salary, regardless of how little, and still live in the same shack? Eventually they do get the houses they demand, then sell or rent them out. Move to another shack. Wash and repeat. This all while they have a decent house in whatever province they come from. The scam culture in this country is ridiculous.

Milky water after maintenance is normal. It's air dissolved in the water that makes it milky as the air comes out of being dissolved when the pressure drops back to atmospheric pressure. Leave that water for 30-60 seconds and all the air comes out and the water is clear again. Go back to drinking tap water in Johannesburg. No need to waste money and bugger up the environment with all the bottles.

Your video is more informative than most. However you miss a huge amount of information to do with the development of both the settlers and the indigenous peoples.
Africans had no system of education and no method of recording their lives. That doesn't mean that they lack the ability.
They where caught in a tribal system that brutalized women and lesser tribes and kept the power of forward movement locked up in an archaic mindset.
That had nothing to do with the settlers. This caused a major gap between the settlers and Africans. (Most unequal is more complicated than your click-bait headline intimates).
On the other hand the settlers looked after themselves as they had their own existential drama. Some where persecuted in Europe and others wanted better opportunities.
In their own limited vision the they did not accept and share their knowledge in a compassionate manner. And then there are all the dynamics of of the Colonial Expansion and the extraction of wealth.
That is a long and and complex story by itself. The big money developed the country but also dominated and controlled all aspects of industry.
Superior education from the UK and Europe created a big advantage as well as disproportionate superior attitudes. The evaluation system was based on European values alone and had no space for African wisdom.
The massive growth and development of Southern Africa from a totally rural environment into a developing country rolled over many things.

This is such great work. Youre one of the few youtubers who have come to SA and truly understand it with nuance. I dont like the videos that paint SA as some black utopia which a lot of Western youtubers do. As a black South Africans this is demeaning and shows how out of touch their experiences with the real lived experience of the majority of South Africans on the ground are.
