I wrote this piece inspired by a jazz club in Chicago, “The Back Room.” I once went there when I was in Chicago. That was an unforgettable memory, and I experienced listening to Chicago Jazz for the first time. Now, The Back Room is under construction at a new location.
[Program Note]
The piece consists of three movements. It opens with a brass-driven introduction. The double bass always plays a major role in this piece, especially in the first movement. The contrabass's pizzicato is accompanied by many conversational dialogues between the clarinet and saxophone group and the flute and oboe in the high register. Nothing is definite about this theme, but you can imagine a mosaic of small motifs scattered everywhere.
The next two movements are a series of solo melodies with warm brass harmonies. And the last chapter. Jazz is all about four beats. I tend to use four or eight beats in my music. The intro motif appears in many different pitches and shapes. Please enjoy listening to it or even playing it!

I wanted to express the city's coolness and the temperature of the air and wind there. Also, I wanted to feel the precise vertical rhythms. It's not an emotional thing, but a more mechanic atmosphere is here, which is related to the coolness. That is why I used the muted trumpet in this movement.
