I was close to tears listening to their testimony. When they were talking about fatigue from fighting off the insurrectionists I was thinking about boxing rounds lasting only 3 minutes and these guys were fighting against multiple opponents for hours.

The legitimacy of our electoral process was in question. To these protesters the "video didn't lie" either. Statistics all presented to back it up. On the flip side FBI statistics and county records presented on C-SPAN by experts made it objectively clear the truth about conduct of municipal police officers. This was before the [obvious] media blitz to contrive this turmoil in our nation. The Deep State initiated it on all fronts due to their fear of reprisal for serious things (don't even speculate).
These protesters demanding a free and fair election, perceived their votes were improperly counted. In response they did not simply declare themselves the rightful winners. Their values compelled them to insist on righteous victory, with moral high ground intact.
They felt, and were, personally intimidated during the election cycle by literal terrorist actions by leftist infiltrators in FBI -- who incited, promoted and gave cover to perpetrators of serious crimes against the other half of the nation based on misrepresented analysis of publicly available objective datasets:

That is a very long way of saying people couldn’t accept an election result due to disinformation and skepticism like what you’re promoting. There are no far-left FBI actors undermining election integrity. There were (and still are) numerous opportunities to view election integrity - from public court findings/filings to reliable reporting from AP, NPR, Poltiico, and Reuters who were close on the matter (not the far-right tabloids you listed). To insist that 1/6 was peaceful when they unlawfully trespassed and wanted to assault lawmakers in a blind effort to usurp democracy is precisely why this committee needs to exist. Kingzingers delivered an excellent well written opening speech, not to mention his sence of pain and passion from start to finish. All Americans should carry this with them as the country continues to move forward with this investigation. Have to say though that it brings a real feeling of dismay not to see Biden not even make a mention of support for these committee members and their mission to seek the real truth on what occurred on January 6, one would think that if he wants to maintain his stature with the American people he definitely needs to get out more and deliver speeches that include all those who are dedicated to seeking real facts and doing a real jobs. Biden appears to be doing ok although skipping pages on core issues that pertain to major obstacles is certainly not going to accelerate the citizens confidence in safely shaping the nation.

National guard under federal control is commanded by the commander in chief, IE the president, followed by the Chief of the National Guard, a military appointment. State national guard deployments are under the purview of their governors. Presumably the national guard would ask for permission from the Mayor of DC as well as the capitol police before deploying to the capitol. No member of Congress is in the military chain of command in our country.
In terms of capitol resources, Pelosi would be in charge of Sergeant at Arms of the House, any security resources associated with that office as well as the Clerk of the House and all security associated with that office (which is what allows the mask mandates/metal detectors).
I'm sure whether she called the governors of Virginia and Maryland begging them to deploy the national guard will come up in this hearing. But she has no authority to actually move national guard troops.

I think the "unarmed" part is quite salient. You can use semantics to say that "arms" are only firearms, or you can say that "armed" means "carrying a weapon". As in "I armed myself with a tire iron". Ordinary items, as the officers said, can be used as weapons and that clearly was the rioters' intent, and certainly their practice. Ergo, it was indeed an armed riot, whether or not FIREarms were present.
