I don't think that's purely hydrogen gas because hydrogen is colorless and odorless like nitrogen and oxygen that is all around us 24/7. You are correct that hydrogen is displaced and produced from the reaction but the fumes visible may not be hydrogen gas.
I am a student and I did the same experiment in our school lab with H2SO4 We tried to pass the H2 through soap water for hydrogen bubbles and tried to ignite them but accidentally the delivery tube got heated and whole gas in the flask got ignited leading to a blast and the cork popped off Fortunately no glass was shattered.
