Major tooth issues like tooth decay is caused when we eat sugary foor such as chocolates, sweets, etc. The bacteria's act upon this sugar and transform it into acid because ( bacteria + sugar = acid ), and this acid eats up the tooth leading to tooth decay. As Toothpaste is a base, it prevents the acid from eating up the tooth by neutralizing it's effect. Hence, Toothpaste prevents tooth decay
