    Thank you for your gracious use of this classic match!
    PertSnergleman's Review:
    A Connors and McEnroe match at the US Open always promised something special. This one delivered - but with a slight twist.
    The McEnroe in this epic was Patrick, the younger brother of John.
    And it was Patrick who quickly grabbed command of the opening-round match, taking the first two sets against the five-time US Open Champion Connors, who five days shy of his 39th birthday entered the 1991 tournament as a wild card with a world ranking of No. 174 - and who, by all early accounts, looked like he was on his way to a quick exit.
    McEnroe, 25, was on cruise control, leading 3-0 in the third set with Connors serving down love-40. But somehow the veteran managed to turn the match on its head, conjuring up some nighttime magic on tennis’ biggest stage to engineer one of the most dramatic comebacks in Open history.
    At 1:35 a.m., Connors emerged victorious by a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, after four hours and 25 minutes on court.
    The miraculous comeback was the launching pad for his legendary run to the semifinals, where Connors would eventually fall to Jim Courier.

      Connors was my inspiration as a kid. First racquet was a T-2000 in the late 70's. Made jr and high school tennis teams with it before switching to a red Head before college.
      Connor's tenacity was always electrifying while I was playing. Watching some of his late career matches In hindsight....we all knew this guy wasn't going to win majors after 1991. A good show at the time, yes.

    Jimmy Connors....the man who invented the FIST PUMP !!! Every time you see a golfer, a baseball player, a basketball player, football player, tennis player, coaches on sidelines, etc.....all celebrating a great moment with the FIST PUMP....that body language began with a man named Jimmy Connors. He's the most exciting player to ever pick up a tennis racket, and he's DIRECTLY responsible for bring in the big money grand prizes into his sport if you were good enough to win a tournament. Every player should be obligated to donate one half of a percent of their yearly prize money into Jimmy Connor's bank account for that...he REFUSED to play for peanuts and he changed the entire culture of tennis.

    In his prime, in 1 single match, I pick Connors over anybody. Sure, he’s tanked sets and could be beaten in big matches. But he never choked under pressure. That’s why I would take him against anyone in his prime. He could force his opponents to choke.

    • @dmmusicmusic
      @dmmusicmusic 4 года назад +2

      against anty of his contemporaries yeah but when slightly larger more athletic guys came along, like Sampras, connors would have had no chance.

      Agreed, at the US Open - but not against Borg at Wimbledon.

    • @lawrence1318
      @lawrence1318 3 года назад

      @@dmmusicmusic That's incorrect. Connors played Sampras the next year (1992) and although he lost in straight sets (best of 3), he broke pistol Pete's serve 3 times. When you get to 39-40 years old, everything you do slows down on the court, and you lose a bit of a step. You also lose explosive power. Connors at his peak would have beaten Sampras. Keep in mind that Sampras had a lot of trouble against Boris Becker, and actually said Becker was the best indoor player in the world. And although Connors never beat Becker, he came damn close at Queens. And Connors was even head to head with Edberg, who often beat Becker. Often it's a matter of style.

    • @philjohnson9320
      @philjohnson9320 2 года назад

      @@lawrence1318 Connors had big losing h2h against Borg, McEnroe and Lendl, and you're telling me in his prime he would beat Sampras? His old school style wouldn't match up against Pete's power tennis. Yes, he broke Pete's serve three times in '92 because he is great fighter and can be intimidating (Pete was still below prime, remember), but all his opponent had to do was play his tennis to win easily. Next you will say Connors in his prime could beat Federer. Roger at 40 would beat Jimmy in his prime.
      Edit: Would like to add that all matches except last one between Connors and Becker were when the latter was just a kid. Sure, he won big events as a teenager, but I could see him getting intimidated by someone of Jimmy's character. Becker still won those matches. Both in their prime, Jimmy gets blasted.

    • @lawrence1318
      @lawrence1318 2 года назад

      @@philjohnson9320 You suffer from wet-behind-the-ears disease.
      Connors overtook Borg in 82. Watch their exhibition match from that year.
      Connors was at least 5 years older than his rivals (often much more). If you compare Connors vs McEnroe ranking v age, there is no comparison: McEnroe gets left for dead. Running around a tennis court for an additional 5 years takes its toll.
      Sampras had already won the U.S open when Connors played him, and Connors was 40. So breaking Pistol Pete's serve 3 times in a 2 set match, was incredible. If you watch the match, Connors was simply tired at certain stages. Connors actually played Sampras twice: the first time he took the first set to a tie-break.
      Connors beat Agassi 3 times in a row in the same exhibition tournament in 1989, after he had already lost twice to Agassi in the 88 and 89 U.S Open. So once Connors got a read on his opponent, he started to dominate him. In fact in the exhibition tournament, Connors was injured and hobbling on one leg, and still beat Agassi. You can find that match in the net and watch Connors completely dominate Agassi.
      You can't compare the prime of one era with another, as there is an evolution of speed which the players progressively adopt and which becomes the new context. (This is similar to comparing an old movie to a new one: the old is dated in mannerisms and speech and yet the actors at the time were modern for the time.) All you can do is look at the players with regard to their rivals, and also with regard to how they matched up against newer players. Connors is king in this regard.
      Connors still holds certain records, the chief of these being most professional wins of any male player in history (109). Federer is at 103 currently and is known to be trying to catch Jimmy's record.
      On the eve of Wimbledon 2013, the chairman of the Royal Tennis Assoc of England publicly announced that Connors was the greatest player of all time. His source was most likely the 2 university studies which had analysed all matches played in all majors since 1969. You can find those studies from North Western University and a university in England whose name escapes me at present. The conclusion was from the universities' statistics departments and used a lot of high-falutin' maths. They were unbiased statistics projects.

    In 1982, I left the Jet opener when they were losing to Miami 45-14, walked over to Flushing Meadow, and caught the last three sets of the Connors-Lendl US Open final (won by Connors), sitting 20 rows above the net. A friend tipped me off that the tickettakers used to watch the match after letting everyone in so no one was at the gates after the first set of the main match started. Wonder if that had changed by 1991 it certainly isn't the case now.

    Stich was the Wimbledon champ that year and Carillo still didn't know how to pronounce his name. God, I can't stand her.

    How did P. McEnroe get into the pro circuit with a backhand that bad? It's just a short push, not even a swing!

    Connors made it thru, and then Jim courier literally blew him off the court. Courier made Connors look like a little girl.

      And you can judge with all your years of professional tennis? Connors was already physically finished by the time he played Courier but what is your excuse?

      Nah in the cbs rundown of this legendary Connors run, can tell P Mac is just like "never make the mistake of assuming you won the match against Connors"... Krickstein on the other hand, must be pissed he's only remembered for losing that epic 5 setter lol

    Die haben ja teilweise gespielt damals wie kranke Hühner. Das waren geschobene Schläge. 0:6, 0:6 gegen Djokovic würde das ausgehen.

      Du bist ein bißchen dumm, oder? 😀 Wenn Djokovic in den 1980ern oder 1990ern gespielt hätte, dann nicht so wie er heute spielt. Er würde dann mit dem Material der Zeit spielen, den Bällen der Zeit, und auf den Belägen der Zeit, und würde nach den Trainingsmethoden der Zeit trainieren. Und natürlich würder NICHT 6:0 6:0 gewinnen, lol.
      Und würden Connors, oder Becker heute spielen, dann würden sie natürlich nicht wie in den 80ern oder 90ern spielen, sondern mit dem heutigen Material und den heutigen Bällen auf den heutigen Plätzen, und wären mit den heutigen Trainingsmethoden geschult worden. Sie würden so spielen, wie man heute spielt.
      Und die heutigen Spieler würden nicht so spielen wie sie spielen, wäre das Tennis nicht mit Hilfe der Leistungen der vorherigen Generation weiterentwickelt worden (Training, Material etc.) Alles baut auf allem Vorherigen auf, in jeder Sportart.
      Eine Steffi Graf hat bei ihrem French Open Sieg 1999 natürlich NICHT so gespielt wie bei ihrem ersten Sieg 1987. Sie hatte neue Schlägertechnik, neue Trainingsmethoden, und hatte ihr Game verändert. Und heute würde sie auch nicht spielen wie 1999, sondern wie 2023.
      Alle Spitzenspieler wären mit ziemlicher Sicherheit in einer anderen Zeit ebenfalls ganz vorne, denn Skill und Talent setzen sich immer durch. Ist nicht besonders schwer zu rallen,...ok für Dich schon.
