I really love that you are leading the charge in publicly developing these cars, but like you’ve mentioned there’s too many unknowns. You said you also went for more aggressive toe and toe has a huge effect on the car. Like others have said, you should try to change one thing at a time and evaluate that change. I absolutely agree that the tyres being an unknown might be skewing the results. The problem you now have is trying to re-baseline the car on the known tyres.
I still wonder whether reducing the front toe out would sort it. As everyone keeps saying, "one change at a time" I believe 🤷🏻♂️
Great video & really good testing information 😃👍🏻
This is invaluable info. Thanks for your work and research mate. Much appreciated.
I've just fitted Whitleine swaybars to my R32 GTR, I ordered During the black Friday sales and due to stock shortages, my front arrived a month after my rear bar. When I fitted just the rear bar on the softest setting, I definately noticed that the rear end felt more solid and connected, however I noticed more oversteer when cornering as the front hollow factory bar still allowed much body roll and the stiffer rear bar would allow the inside wheel to lift more during cornering.
After fitting the front swaybar also on the softest setting, The suspension feels slightly stiffer as both ends are connected, but now the body-roll is greatly improved and all wheels are definatley more firmly planted eliminating oversteer and squirm through corners.
Thanks for your helpful GRY videos and for sharing your non-biased experience rather than another pure product show nobody needs!
As a matter of fact during 40 years of optimizing experience I found it always absolutely NORMAL to be faced with backdraws while optimizing cars. Actually one might see more fails than wins, it´s all about trial and error, it´s impossible to predict the result (however I thought the same as Ant Banister).
The only ctitics I have: Once you notice that this setup won´t work why haven´t you immediately changed at least the rear to full soft to see what happens? Easy to do and good learning I guess...
That bonnet came up so well.
im still in awe of the fact that this a yaris thats become a little hatch weapon! i wana see a drag race with golf r and s3 or of the sort
Just about to do this same experiment with a BA falcon. Will be interesting, we are stiffening the front swaybar to try reduce rear oversteer.
wow pretty interesting results. ı think tires big roll on this sitiuation. Known best rubber gets more responsive on the car and push the bar adjustment more stifer is good then. I'm waiting for the new results with curiosity. Take care man 😉👍
I'll never see a GR Yaris but I've loved all this content from you guys on it
What country are you from? =]
That's a tire issue. Easy to tell because sway bars adjust balance not traction level. On an auto x course you can stiffen or soften both and gain traction say through a Chicago box but once it's loaded the bars aren't going to stiffen so much it loses grip both ends. That's tires sure of it.
Having increased toe when fitting, it would be wise to work on adjusting this to optimum before tyres etc.
randy pobst once took a gtr up pikes peak and removed the swaybar in the front completely and said it handled waaay better after that.
crazy but perhaps a fun experiment.
Can't sell a swaybar that's not there tho.
@@FirstLast-bi8xi well perhaps they can develop a floppy swaybar? :D
Whiteline is so good, ill always remember going to a local repco and getting everything he could for his wrp10 wrx, still stock sti shocks but handles so much better
When will the parts be available for EU distributors? I need em now 😊
When you said "the rear will be set to full stiffness" I said to myself, you are going to lose grip LOL
i recon those sway bars on a soft setting ont he front and medium on the rear would be gun with a well known tyre brand on a fast track like SMP. luddenham with no front bar and stiff rear bar and re71rs would be gold setup...
Did you try disconnecting the front sway bar or setting it softer? Or trying it with stock front sway bar? I understand it's a whiteline promo.
How is solid sway bar l lighter? Did you weigh them? The centre of a solid bar is well know to be dead weight.
Loving the content!
Rule of thumb: Change 1 thing at a time, then on to the next step. Anyone else using aftermarket sway bars to compare notes? I've always preferred stiffer rear (VW Beetle inluences).
Beetle MUST have considerably stiffer rear due to the weight back there, but conventional cars don’t require that aggressively stiff rear.
@@BigCarKilla Trying to emulate that in front drive cars... Tail out on dirt and snow without using the parking brake ;)
whiteline over the cusco set? which one is better in your opinion?
The higher the speed through the turns the softer the rear sway bar should be!?! The front is going to be a balance between sway bar and shock dampen/rebound!! ;)
Where can I buy the Trackpack for $995. I could not see this offer on Whiteline or Sparesbox. In fact on Sparesbox I could not seem to select a GR Yaris option under the search function...
So what is the check engine light on for? Is it the down pipe or something else. Just want to know so I can choose the exhaust properly.
nothing for anyone to worry about. if it was, we would tell our viewers.
Thumbs up for the video, this was good.
However, considering your previous videos, you touch very lightly on the swaybar mechanics, and I know you have a lot more knowledge about them.
Could you make a W.T.F. video about them, how they can change from understeer to oversteer on stock suspension, how they change the speed you have to make corrections on the steering wheel, how the contact patch changes between front and rear when cornering.. I mean, there's two videos worth of stuff on them :)
Also, active electronic sway bars, carbon fiber swaybars, hollow high diameter sway bars ... the list goes on!
#shockworks are definitely going to improve the performance
Wouldn’t this all be for naught once the cage is installed, due to the extra chassis stiffness?
no
this and a cage are totally different things
It’s awesome that you guys do special stuff but should it be not in the rally direction instead for track?
I’m ordered it because it is a great car but also its stands for wrc and I would love to tuned it in for gravel roads, dirt and snow.
Is there someone out there in that direction??
its a road car mate. people aren't buying them to turn into rally car.
@@MotiveVideo 👍🏾 but I did exact because of this reason. For track I would buy other cars.
anyway.
Do you know one that does turn this in to rally?
@@MotiveVideo I found it!!
ruclips.net/video/a_T9vAgpb-o/видео.html
that is what you should do with a gr!!
😄
with short wheel base have the front slightly stiffer... the rear was tighter makes it twitchy
track cars stiffer nose drifters stiffer rears
Were the bars an unnecessary upgrade then? Does setting them to full soft make them functionally the same as the stock bars?
Rear bar is necessary
front bar isn't wih stock dampers if chasing lap times, but great for driver feel on the road
exactly what we said in video
@@MotiveVideo thanks for the reply. The question was more so is the resistance of the upgraded bars on full soft equal to the resistance of the stock bars. I don’t think this was covered in the video.
This may not be knowable without proper test equipment.
You got a review on the Garmin Catalyst in the future?
Andrew, what lap timer system is that on the window?
Garmin catalyst I think
@@quest8795 that’s it, cheers
What about stiffening the front and softening the rear? It worked really well on a newage Impreza wrx sti.
Why don't you try with just the rear sway bar and use the stock front bar ? Could also be a good exercise
what is with the preload of the bar, you can not preload the whole bar, it rotates freely in the bushes. You can only preload one side but i dont know why would you do that (maybe just for oval racing) :)
were making sure there ie no pre load, not adding jt
Would be good to see you test two sets of tires on the same rims. Zestino's against a toyo or similar brand over 5 or 10 laps and see how the zestino's compare. Personally i could never fork out cash for a no name brand tire.
He's only using them because they're a sponsor, otherwise he would use a tyre that was actually good
i think the tyres are just not that good man.the car was pushing and sliding front to rear because the tyres were not really gripping, so then they were chasing grip via mechanical setups and it masked the issue of the tyres not being up to par....you can see the struggle in Andrew's last few words trying to not disappoint the sponsors...buuuut....i think the tyres might be to blame :/
Based on testing, those other Zestino 07RS tyres are besting the top name brands by quite a bit. R888R are $500 ea and Zestinos have been around 0.8 to 1 second faster. They’ve also matched the Nankang AR1 in LapTimes which are being used by a lot of time attack competitors and loved at the Nurburgring. The only 200tw they don’t beat would be the A052 and of course the new RE71RS
@@fueledgti interesting to know, the re71rs and the Advans (ad08r and the a052) as well as the dunlop z3's (and z2) have always been top tyres. it would still mean though that maybe there's a tyre issue? maybe these tyres are like the rs4's and rs3 hankooks and need more heat in them to reach there best? it seems nothing has yet been able to topple the re71's!
@@superstock9261 Marketing works very well these days, which is why people focus on the big name brands like Advan and Toyo. The cheaper brands are improving their technology quite a lot especially for their price. These specific Zestinos haven’t properly been tested, so I feel like these probably have already heat cycled. But the 07rs they previously had are gems
$995?! That's a freaking awesome price for an entire kit. 👍 I spent that much just on Crustida's front end from Fulcrum/SuperPro, so to get front and rear for that price, well done Whiteline.
Whiteline is now owned by Superpro/Fulcrums overarching company (can't remember the name atm)
@@yourmotherlovesit Found it, Zeder Corporation. 👍
@@yourmotherlovesit companies merged into Zeder, but still completely different manufacturing plants for both brands.
@@markwilkinson9302 Hey Mark, Its Adam, the old manager from the pakenham store haha
yourmotherlovesit oh hey man!!!
whats with the CEL?
Nothing to stress about
As a viewer I can say what I'd like to see if the fastest yaris don't care so much for street trim cause there's others doing that
What’s the crack with only 145k subs?? Should be a M on there somewhere
Sparesbox - where you order swaybars from them and they cancel your order for having none in stock.
I ordered a snorkel of them that they don’t even sell
Owned by GPC (Repco) - that’s really all you need to know...

Hi Andrew, finally I have to ask you if you could tell us the model name of the nice red G-Shock that you are wearing? :-D
Anyone else not manage to find the parts they are showing in the video?
That engine light is a worry. Still can’t get rid of it means it must be serious.
Probably should ask rather than presume. Its not a worry and we did get rid of it by clearing it at end of session.
we have been testing different 02 sensor locations. Some go off all the time, some not at all and some every few hundred kilometres. None effect performance at all.
@@MotiveVideo I did read you were clearing it but it keeps coming back so something isn’t right.
@@DrunkenAfro It doesnt keep coming back anymore. It was something we were trying that day. Dont give it any more thought.
Motive is getting pretty snarky in the comments section today. 😂
very hard to say that something didn't work off the bat, but it honestly looks like the tyres were not up to par. it sounds a lot like you need to set up the car almost like its a front drive car with those tyres? more initial and mid corner steering? Maybe you are running too much or not enough rear camber and maybe the rear toe needs to be played around with? i'd go back to square one with setup and go back to a stockish setup, just standard toe and caster then 2 degrees camber and go with a well known tyre like a052 or re71rs or something. then play with toe ie/out, camber and front to rear rake....it sounds like you got a tyre issue though......
Yeah swaybars are an interesting thing. I threw upgraded Eibach swaybars in the E36, got really understeery and I ended up removing the rear swaybar all together and the car handles much better! Go figure.
Rear bar removal made it oversteer more? I've never seen that in 10 years of racing. Maybe you meant other way around? I've never raced an e36
@@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast rear bar removal removed some understeer. I don't quite understand the mechanics of it but the E36 race community recommend it to assist with the above. I took my swaybar with me to the track for a few events, but now it just stays at home. Did a 1.07 at Wakefield a couple of weeks ago with no rear bar.
ARB's are one of my next upgrades on my car, it now has alot of rear roll due to the rear seats beeing removed, i had to put back my spare tire because the rear would become unstable under braking,i would like to put in a half cage since i got front recaro pole position bucket seats, so it balances the car out,i have done weight reduction on the front also by removing the aircon compressor condensor and lines, lighter exhaust, lighter suspension, and front aluminum control arms with anti lift kit(saves 2.5 kg in unsprung weight which is noticable)and the recaros and back seat removal. It's a audi a3 8p 2.0tfsi quattro 3 doors manual but after all this weight reduction, it still weighs in 1538kg with me in it,full tank of fuel 55L and i weigh about 60kg.Thats about 1478kg wet.i like to get to 1450kg but thats a big stretch without stripping the interior. Now the car has 414bhp and 545nm on a hybrid tte420 turbo, so it isn't slow but handeling could be better improved, anti lift kit did transform the cars cornering and steering directness and sharper turn in along with better cornering stability, and i will be stepping up from 225/40/18 to 255/35/18 all around which will also make a big difference.Love these kind of video's it gives me alot of ideas on what works and what doesn't now this is something that i will have to try out and adjust myself on my car, but it's a good thing to see what works for other cars.👍
IT NEEDS SOME AERO
so, sway bars = money in the bin
I mean idk because I fitted some beefier sway bars on my 1990 Mercedes estate and it made a big difference to it’s handling so I guess it just depends on the setup and what you’re gonna use them for
No, you just have to adres issues as they come up. If you have a problem with too much bodyroll or balance, you can use them to fix it. If you dont or can use aftermarket shocks to do solve the problem, you might not need them
In this case apparently so.. but in every honda and Nissan I have had sways made an awesome difference
The lap times are now slower than with the stock sway bars installed 1:08.04 vs 1:07.64, is this due to track conditions or changes that have been made to the car (sway bars and front toe adjustment) or both?
People shouldn't be too concerned about the engine light, it doesn't seem to be causing any real issues.
Motive- Why delete my comment that was sharing a link to you about a potential engine issue?????
