718 Boxster - better than previous boxsters in every department except the emotion and sound provided by a flat 6. The new engines performance is undeniable
This flat four is also "emotional"... but in a different way. I would call it "emotion through driving"... and not with its "sound". I would say "fuck the flat six sound", if the old engine has not this level of torque like the new turbo fourcylinder has. And who's really not ok with it, can still install an aftermarket exhaust system. Then this engine sounds fantastic too.
but that scream, im sure future iterations of a flat six could produce more torque, i mean even BMW's turbo charged 6 cylinders sounded great like the e46. I get what u mean though :)
Trouble is that the flat six is hard work and rather slow in comparison. On the road, even driving fast, you drive on torque and not very often power, so with 50% more torque at less than half the revs, there’s a hell of an improvement. You go faster everywhere but it feels slower. Perfect for driving across France.
Its part of the experience, the flat 6 - this boxster would blitz my 72 911, but its about engagement that makes sports car ‘sporty’ not how fast it is - 718 is an epic fast car for sure, but so was the 981. Id take the 981 thanks and for go the 10% power difference
I have it in the same colour, Crayon in the UK, Sports Chrono and PDK. Went from the flat 6 to this. Love it, performance, handling, look and sound. Lots of money, huge extras.
I own this thing and you can't beat it with a stick. This is my second boxer and this one is just better. Its my daily driver. The people who beat up on them have not driven them for years. They are fun, quick, and reliable
Really good review. If you prefer the 981 sound fair enough. Purely my own opinion but as someone who owned the flat 6 911, I never rated it. I had 3 V8 cars and now that's what you call an engine noise!!! My view of the 981 was always a 911 wannabe, at least now the 718 has its own character. The engine noise may be different, but from my far from untrained ear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the sound of the 718. The "S" in sports mode makes a great noise and is blisteringly fast and responsive. Each to their own I guess, but I just don't understand the negative views - the 718 is the most fun car I've had
I love the 4 cylinder and it's power, the design is awesome and the handling (especially with the manual) is great. It's better than the 986 and the 981 in every perspective!!! Such a great car, totally love it 😍 ( I drove a GTS with an manual )
This reply is a year late considering your post but the answer is you do not need an S. 300 hp in a 3000 pound car is absolutely spectacular. If you’re going to race it, you may want more power but if you’re going to drive it on normal roads you will never need more power than this car delivers because you couldn’t use it anyway.
If you do not know why the seats fold, you should look again!!! At the top of the seat there is a hook to hang your jacket on. Really clever! It also cuts accesstime to the engine bay.
