A computer can beat a master at Go or Chess, but the game of parcel delivery is dominated by man. I drove with a veteran driver (some 30 yrs) who trash talked Orion for the whole shift. He and his fellow drivers said it was garbage. He compared his route with where Orion was supposed to take him, and I could easily see what he meant. I don't know how it works, but I imagine the best option would be to have it track a human driver on his route and to use the decisions he makes to improve the algorithm. These guys know their delivery areas like you wouldn't believe- every street, every address, ascending/descending, one-ways, no left turns, time-of day importance (when schools let out and crowd the area, what times businesses open, etc).
What you are saying reminds me of some people saying "My grandfather smoked 20 cigarettes each day and he lived 95 years". Yes, there will be always exceptions, but the computer system will be better in most cases. It also eliminates those bad routes made by tired or inexperienced drivers. Also, the idea of Orion is to learn. So it can only be better.
You make good points and as a driver myself (for a competitor company), I can tell you that the algorithm is a good idea whose time has not yet come. It's not sophisticated enough to acknowledge many of those variables you listed and is still fairly primitive compared to a skilled and experienced driver. Honestly, I think it's just too many variables to expect the algorithm to be able to usurp a human yet.
@@TimmmTim ORION is based upon conditions that do not exist in the real world. It assumes that the driver can walk through the car and select any package in 7 seconds. It assumes that containment issues and heavy pickups never happen. It assumes a perfect load with no misloads. It assumes a perfect dispatch. It assumes perfect weather. It assumes perfect road and traffic conditions. It assumes that the package car is on a lazy Susan and can be rotated 180 degrees from each park position. It assumes that package car drivers are robots who never need to use a public restroom. It sounds like a great idea to anyone who sits at a desk looking at dots on a map on their computer. But if you actually have to go out and perform the duties of a package car driver in the real world, ORION is pure garbage. We wasted a billion dollars on it so now we have to make believe that it works in order to justify the expense and continue defrauding the shareholders.
@@scotthodges4382 you are right! Garbage in, garbage out!, no computer can tell you how to do you run, too many uncertain thing can happen, if you have 4 big bulk stop, an it's like the 12, 21, 35, 65 stop of the day, no way I am wait till then, I will do it first an asap to get rid of the bulk stops first, if I can't move around in the back of the truck, just because the computer tell me so! 1. Explain UPS is Using Big Data to Transform Package Deliveries the business process discussed in these videos 2. Explain how the technology discussed in the case and the business process to which it is applied? 3. Discuss the challenges that are likely to be faced by organizations while using these technologies Plz answer me 😭
"ups is not cutting it's headcount!" False. Workers have been laid off and automation is doing the work of long time workers. And their are no classes or programs to upgrade our workers into technicians. This is also a false statement. Source: 30 year UPS employee with knowledge of 4 hubs.
MrWhatsupeverybody With the Teamsters union we are contract employees, who is being laid off! There are guys at my center been there too long and won’t leave! The contract language says automation can not replace workers.
Ups doesant have to cut headcount because they all quit.their partimers who make up the majority of its workforce have not received a raise for over 30 years.I made more as a partimer in1989 than they make now.
Technology will eliminate humans handling packages. This is good. The work involved in handling packages is brutal and mind numbing and sometimes dangerous. It is one of the worst jobs there is. Why should humans do this work when we can have machines do it faster and more accurately? Technological innovations make same day delivery possible. I haven't been to a mall in years. I order everything but groceries online. Selection, price, and next day delivery. That is modern shopping and we are lucky to have it.
dang thats a nice ups hub. the Fort worth hub in fort worth is old af. its all mostly man labor work instead of those new fancy cool technologies they speak of.

I wish they would have invested money in a better contract for their employees 😂

So they use Orion to cut gas costs for UPS and to make sure that the driver delivers your package to your doorstep?
I hope you should make videos about its competitors such as FedEx and DHL.

UPS should concentrate on paying their employees what they are worth. UPS I a prime example of a GREEDY big business.

I think they have a conveyer belt that runs in a circle with no escape for your package and you’re screwed if your package gets stuck in that loop.
There goes my job
