  • Like many state run #psychiatrichospitals, Marlboro State Hospital was a troubled institution. This video is somewhat of a #recovery story, and is a tribute to the more than nine hundred souls who suffered there and now rest in its #cemetery.

A quick internet search into its history is a depressing lesson in #patientcare, #patientabuse, hospital mismanagement, and, ultimately a failed effort to make a suitable living space and treatment center for those with #mentalillness.
Though surely there were many good people who worked hard to make the lives of the residents better, the number of stories about the lack of care and abuses suffered there are overwhelming.
Many of these kinds of #hospitals were very painful places. Unfortunately, when they closed, nothing better took their place. And despite best intentions, many of the #mentallyill persons ended up in the streets, rather than woven into the community, as many health practitioners had hoped would happen.

When my mother was in training as a nurse she did an internship there; I vividly remember her coming home crying many days..... The people that were there touched her deeply.

Does anyone have information on the Abandoned settlement that was torn down in 2010 that was situated south of the insane asylum?

We used to go for walks and the grave markers would say Elvis pressely, or Alber Einstein, they would use their schizophrenia names.

The first #1 grave was opened in April 1931, same year as hospital was established. The last #924 was in April 1960. I live nearby and just walk by there this evening with my son.

@@OC87RD Honestly, the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital holds and odd place in my heart. I know too many people who have all types of stories front the days it was open. Every now and then I look to see if anyone ever acknowledges the cemetery since its the only piece left and I stumbled on your video, which is beautifully done.
