As an epileptic, I would very much appreciate any kindness - even if it's silly. But then again I'm usually laughing myself. It would make me feel safer. Too many people DO try to be a hero and aren't just being a normal person, etc.. I'm very glad you were there for her.
As someone who lives near Yellowstone, there are many horrors every year of people being hurt. But there's a whole book called Death in Yellowstone that is very vivid and reminds you how scary nature can be. You shouldn't be scared of the beauty and wonder of Yellowstone, but definitely be cautious. :)
20:52 I’ve actually heard that when someone smiles and gives reassurance like that it’s actually proven to help the person feel calm because they really do feel assured that it’s gonna be OK
Never let anyone take your shine link! As one who would also buy the stupid hat and wear it with joy, seeing how pleased it makes you is all the validation you need.
the wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone was a great opportunity to understand how wolves affect the ecosystem. Not just how they directly cull elk populations, but how their presence has indirect effects. one of my favorites is this: Elk wil naturally prefer to browse tender foliage at the riverside where they also drink water, because why not eat and drink in the same spot? BUT - when wolves are in the picture, staying in the same place is dangerous, so you drink your water and move on. What that leads to is a flourishing of growth alongside rivers (where previously the elk were ruining those young plants at riversides), and it improves erosion control AND beavers love it too, because waterside saplings are available (rather than being stripped by elk)
I’m not sure if the book addresses this, but the bison were not hunted (EDIT: they were not “over-hunted), they were killed as one part of the US and Canadian governments’ acts of genocide on the indigenous people of North America (EDIT: because bison was a valuable resource for the indigenous people, who indeed did hunt the bison but did not waste any part of the animal or take more than needed). Indigenous peoples did not view themselves as separate from their environment, and generally lived in a working relationship with nature. I know when Rhett kept saying “we” he meant Europeans or white people, but I just wanted to make that point because us indigenous people are still here. Great episode!
I remember being taught in school that settlers were killing bison ‘for sport’ and leaving the carcasses behind to rot in the wilderness because they didn’t know how to process the carcasses and thinking to myself how much that sounded like a lie
not condoning the government sanctioned bison slaughter, but bison were obviously hunted as well. even some natives took part in the over-hunting, once they had the means to do so (e.g. firearms and horses).
Idk, I mean the story I heard back in the day is that bison were hunted to near extinction bc of the expansion of the railroad. The bison would get on the track and disrupt if not destroy trains bc they would basically explode on the front when hit. This is actually why the old times trains had that wedge shape on the front so that hitting a bison would do more of a slicing chop rather than hitting a blunt surface. This is the story I knew it according to a documentary I watched, and it was indeed sanctioned by the government. I'm also not saying they didn't kill bison as a way to rob the native people of their food source. That's been a war tactic since long before the Europeans came to the America's, also, the Europeans aren't the only ones to have ever used it as a tactic. I'm just saying I know that the American railroad had a lit to do with it, and people even hung out the windows of trains with rifles to kill herds that got too close to the tracks. It's really sad either way.

22:36 faith in humanity restored. Thank you link. My daughter has special needs that could lead to seizures and I fear that if and when it takes place, I will not be present to her.
I was just at Yellowstone earlier this year. While I didn't see Grand Prismatic, I saw the Artist Paint Pots and they are 1000% correct. The colors are absolutely beautiful. Also, honestly, I have no idea how anyone could EVER jump in to a pool. They smell so sulfuric and toxic, and the heat coming off of them is so intense. It takes an immense level of stupidity to think "I'm going to get in there!"
I listen to most ear biscuits and every pod cast I can find Steve Rinella on. Never in my life did I imagine there'd be any cross over between you all! The whole time I was listening to you talk about bison, I was thinking, "they should really read Rinella's book..."
Funny she said she felt fine. My brother has epilepsy and he feels so tired and sore after, even when he doesn’t hit his head. All of his muscles in his body seize hard during his seizures.
Adrenaline and endorphins from the injury momentarily negated feelings of exhaustion and soreness that were on their way. I hope she got a good medical team looking after her.
I DEFINITELY thought that the dog/guy story was something they witnessed live. It was not clear at all that this was just something they were told. I was honestly really confused why they were so calm telling it.
Yellowstone is beautiful. My grandparents worked there after retirement. I finally got to go there after my grandma passed. My parents went there for their honeymoon. It is a little scary though. Stay away from the hot stuff. The bison and elk were everywhere.
So weird to hear you tell the stories of the Yellowstone acid pools. A friend of mine had gone to Yellowstone recently and came back with the same (and more) stories. It freaks me out how easily those are able to be accessed especially the teen who jumped in thinking it was just a regular water hole. 😢
I have been watching you both for so many years.. I get excited when you even mention MT.. But the fact that you were in Bozeman!!! Wish I would have ran into you guys. Thank you for everything you do and making me want to be my Mythical Best! Hope you enjoyed Montucky! 🗻
I was only in Bozeman briefly (aka got there at about 7pm and stayed until about 8am the next morning) as an airport destination to go to Vegas (I'm from Saskatchewan). The landscape there reminded me a lot of Banff, picturesque and surrounded by the mountains. Nice quiet town, and enjoyed my time there and would love to spend more time specifically there as a holiday! The "worst" part was taking off from the airport to go to Vegas - it's a hella steep climb angle they take to get over the mountains and it makes it a lot worse than any other takeoffs I've had to deal with!
“Death In Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park” by Lee H. Whittlesey is a fascinating book about all the various ways people have died in the park.
One time at band camp, my friend, and I had to drop our saxophones and run to help someone who was seizing. He turned him on his side, and I put my hands under his head to prevent more bleeding. We found out later he was epileptic. That’s the only time I have ever not frozen during an emergency while there was a crowd of on lookers.
Wow, took a good mythical break for a while, come back and Link's been getting ink done! I guess he no longer thinks tattoos are only cool on other people 😸👍
I definitely recommend Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It is a beautifully written non-fiction with a combo of nature, mind-blowing plant science, indigenous teachings/story telling, and memoir.💚
lowkey im really sad about the guy who jumped in after the dog. like he's a hero!!! not even HIS DOG, his first instinct was to go after it and save it. that's an awful way to die but at least he died a hero
Im glad people are better than me and can actually enjoy Yellowstone. I could not breathe. The smell of sulfur was so strong I had to stay in the car because i could not stop gagging. It was very pretty though 😅
i wish yall would put the Good Mythical Evening up on your channel as a VOD after the event so the rest of us can see it. But, that's just me. ok thanks.
just saw a clip on tiktok that had a ton of views and stuff about someone telling people the dangers of going off path at yellowstone. coincidence! it's a hot topic rn!
I was just in Wyoming to visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton we stayed in Jackson Wyoming and I swore I saw you Rhett by any chance did you guys come to Jackson
If you’re into beavers (perhaps they were mentioned by Jay bc they’re back in Yellowstone since the wolves were reintroduced!) read Eager: the surprising, secret life of beavers and why the matter By Ben Goldfarb! He’s a great writer and beavers are just amazing creatures!
Most bison meat that is sold in restaurants and in grocery stores comes from farm raised bison, and they are cross bred with beef cattle, so the meat isn't pure bison meat.
Grew up in Wyoming. Everyone knows the legend of the Dog in the pool. You didn't steal old boy's story on that one. That story belongs to everyone in the area.

I find grater on national park more enjoyable than Yellowstone, because you are far more restricted from exploring due to the wildlife dangers. I love the Tetons. Even got married there. Yellowstone is okay as a regular tourist place.
I know most of the stuff about Canada was a joke but I don’t think y’all understand how many Americans actually think that all of Canada speaks French, I’ve been a west coast Canadian my entire life and I can count on one hand the amount of people I know who are fluent French speakers… and that’s because they’re from the east 😂
