I agree! I was lucky enough to see Savatage with Criss back in the day and still think of it as the best concert I ever went to! I crank their music LOUD to this day, very frequently! 🙏🎸🤘
Hell yes!!🤘😀🤘🎸thank you so much for doing this man! @@dreuxschoenbeck2625 Would you believe I never heard Stranger until your comment sent me searching for some of their songs. Great band! I saw their name everywhere back then, but never heard them! By the time I started listening to local music I was into the heavier stuff like Nasty Savage and Siren and all the death metal bands, but I do love AOR/hard rock, and the Stranger song I just heard "Jackie's So Bad" is a perfect example of the genre. I'm definitely going to explore their music now. Thanks!
@@um3899 Check out the LP’s Rock Solid and No Rules. Swamp Woman, Okeechobie Whiskey, Wrong Side of the Tracks were killer songs. I met Ronnie a few times. Another one of my guitar heroes. Tampa had some great bands back then
Sabotage was such a huge band in Europe and Sao Paulo Brazil. I've always put Chris in the same style as Randy also. I remember when the siren's EP first came out I was blown away. .
Johnny Lee Middleton plays in Whiskey Stills & Mash when he isnt touring with TSO, or working with Savatage. LOVE Savatage. I opened for them in my band DAMNAGE in 92.
I Saw Savatage maybe 1990 or so at the living room in Providence RI. Gutter ballet was a great album. Such a big thick sound and the solos were phenomenal
Happy Birthday David. . You are one Hell of a guitar player. and an even better teacher. Thank you for everything you do .... signed ... a happy customer.
Even though Srange Wings felt strangely like a thousand other hard rock songs I've heard before I discovered it recently, it literally made me cry when I heard it. There was just something else going on in this band that was a little above and beyond.
This is beautiful, thank you. I grew up with Savatage and worshiping Chris Olivia in the late 80s. I was devastated when he died the riffs and solo to “Hall of the Mountain king” drop me Dead to this day.
Criss is undoubtedly a guitar hero and one of the best from his era. On a separate note (pun intended lol) I think a chordplay video for Andy Timmons would be awesome.
Thy Headbangers Ball... Gutter Ballet! I'm hooked, classical studies, Randy Rhoads then Trans Siberian Orchestra. Incredible guitar challenges... What fun! Another great Late Night Lesson.
I have a trading card of this band that I found on the sidewalk in the Echo Park/Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. I grew up in BFE Michigan and remember in late 1989 Guitar For The Practicing Musician Magazine transcribed a track by this band called Gutter Ballad.
Thanks for the lesson. What is sad and very disappointing is that there are hardly any guitar players teaching any Savatage Guitar lessons on RUclips. I would love to learn a lot of their songs with or without the lead guitars
You captured Criss' touch, thats great man.We Sava fans used to say that he is criminally underrated but thx to TSO and and ppl like you,he is still a living legend imo.Thank you!
I was there, I was a stage hand at Livestock that weekend.... "Savage" were all my good friends, I was one of their first roadies... knew them all since high school back, when they were known as "Avatar".... it was great weekend that ended horribly... I heard what happened when I was on my way home that sunday evening...R I P Chris 😥
Love Criss Oliva! I hear similarities in my own playing to the stuff he played, I think sometimes certain guitarists resonate with us more than others and we have things that influence in certain guitarists that just hit home more than others for some reason. I know this is definitely the truth for me. I love George Lynch, Dann Huff, Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine, etc. And then there's Criss-- for some reason my own style is similar to his enough that I consider him one of my absolute main influences.
Thanks man. One of my favorite bands (Excluding Fight for the Rock no one likes that album :) ). I remember trying to learn these songs when I was a kid and didn't know about tuning the guitar down. My friend Mike who was born with god-like ears figured it out.
Ok... revelation... "Strange Wings" is one of my favourite Savatage tunes. I never thought it was in "whole-step-down" standard tuning. Mind properly blown. And now that I've recovered (somewhat)... would you be willing to please-please have a go at the riff from "Another Way" from 1998's awesome "The Wake of Magellan"? I've been trying to get my head around it (supposedly it sits somewhere in B...), but I can't figure it out! A couple of live recordings by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra have not helped...
Are you sure? I thought Criss was strictly a whole-step down kind of player, and he occasionally tuned to drop-D down a whole step (which produces a low C).
Criss Oliva, that great unsung legend of 1980s guitar heroics.
Totally agree. He was phenomenal.
criss oliva is one of the most criminally underappreciated guitar players ever. Savatage should have been huge
I never under appreciated him for a second🤘🙂
Savatage shouid have been huge I agree my brother

Savatage is a highly underrated band. They influenced a lot of today's modern Progressive Metal bands like Dream Theater.
Seen Savage 3 times...and met Criss on the Edge of Thorns tour. Criss always delivered a great show.
Songs like Strange Wings and White Witch take me to a particular time in my life. They really are a sort of soundtrack for me,
Saw him live 5 times amazing player I’m always playing along with savatage

Savatage sits right in the same bucket as all Dio related groups, Armored Saint & Maiden. Great grab !

Criss Oliva is a loss comparable to Randy Rhoads imo. Unreal talent.
Absolutely!
Rhoads is overrated. Criss is underrated.
If it wasn’t for Randy and Eddie music wouldn’t be the same today because most of our guitar heroes were their guitar heroes.

David I love your videos criss is a legend 😎
When you tune down a whole step and drop the low E string a step lower it is refered to as "Drop C Tuning.
Yes. He did mention that the low E string is a C during the 1st tune, with the rest of the guitar tuned down a whole step.
Awesome. I love their Sirens album so much. Especially the song Holocaust.
Keep um coming. RAMJAM must be on the way.
Those higher barre chords remind me of Varg (of Burzum) a little. I bet he was enjoying some Criss Oliva when he was growing up.
What an overlooked band, they deserved better.

Thanks for the vids. You're bad ass
Met the brothers at the Channel in Boston could not have been nicer guys .
Chris should be held up in equal footing with randy Rhoads imo. So much talent in both, both gone too soon

Don't hate on me but, I really think Savatage would have made it a little bit further if they had a heavier drummer. RIP forever Mr O! 🤘🙏🤘
LOL Is that you, Doc?
One of the heaviest hitting drummers in rock/metal. He didn't get the nickname Dr. Killdrums from playing jazz, dude. GTFOOH.
