The observation about everyone thinking they are middle class is so true. I had a colleague who used to keep using this phrase "Middle Class Problems" in every possible conversation and her family had 3 apartments in Bengaluru. THAT IS NOT "MIDDLE CLASS" for god's sake!

Upper middle is a term coined by technically rich (i.e defined as rich w.r.t average earnings of a country/city). The average income of Bengaluru is around 7L p.a. Highest in the country. If you are earning 5-7 times the city's average, I'm sorry to say you aren't middle class. You are technically a millionaire. There is a huge deviation in terms of necessity and comfort for a person actually in the middle class (earning around 7-12L p.a) and for a person earning say 30L p.a. Edit: According to you, if one has 3 apartments he/she is upper middle class (technically middle class according to you) and by that logic person with 2 houses is middle class and a person with one house is poor. Seriously? Being able to afford even a single house in a city like Bengaluru which costs around 45-50l minimum is poor? C'mon now! What about people like me then? Who stay in rented house? @@harshitabhuyan8892 This "upper middle class" term is so annoying. Most of them are upper class people. In South Asian countries, upper class doesn't mean living in mansions or having lots of supercars, the bar is a lot lower since the average income and quality of life is lower. I literally have a friend who calls himself "upper middle class" while he lives in a good apartment in a wealthy neighborhood and has like 3-4 cars, including a Mercedes.
But IIM's/IIT's dont do partiality. Get a good score in CAT, 10th, 12th and u r in. Also loans r available at reasonable interest rates for such qualified students and the payback period is also around 15 yrs which is far more than actually required cz top tier IIM's are that good in placements with average 17 LPA package.

Not quite true, Firstly if you really want to persue research then IISC bangalore or IIST would have been better. Also, if you have a good project you will surely get funding, par or subpar projects are neglected.
@@aaravgulati2 Those abroad colleges have funding in which probably all of our 23 IITs operate so this comparison is quite baseless. Also, IITs are far better if you ultimately want a good package because of the campus selection quite unique to India.
I left India, though not for the US or Canada. I would have had to take an extremely big loan and pay it off in another 7 years. I went to Europe and did my masters for cheaper than I would have done in India. Honestly, I did not leave India because I wanted to. I tried so hard to score well in MBA for 3 years and I did. But my applications kept getting rejected every damn year because in my 12th I scored exact 80% and not >80. So, in the general category I kept getting rejected. The normal MBA universities were also charging atleast 10 lakh+. I didn't want to spend that amount of money in some mediocre place. You go to better places to build connections and network. I had randomly applied to a couple European universities who had just an online form at the time. They interviewed me and offered me an admission. The total cost of 3 years education was less than my bachelor's!!
Exactly...my situation is similar to yours. I studied at NIT and now thinking of going to Europe for higher studies. It took a year to decide if going to Europe would be worth it or not...and I think it is worth to spend a year to research if going abroad is necessary and I agree it depends upon the person and their situation. You cannot blanket everyone saying "Going abroad is worth it" or "going abroad is not worth it". Every situation is different.
@@ekta9789 8 lakh is not fees. My fees was Rs. 25000 per semester. I managed costs by working on the side. I mentioned in my post. I had a loan of 8 lakh and didn't need a penny more from India. I could earn the money with a job. And in Europe you're expected to work while studying as it is very beneficial to gain experience while studying before applying for a job.
I'm American and while championing sports is fair, I also want to point out that it can be a way to hide bribery. Rich parents sometimes pay coaches to get their child in as an athlete in a less-popular sport. There was a scandal a couple of years ago about it, but in my limited experience it seems to happen WAY more than people think.
Thanks for clearing about the middle class. I think in the last decade movies have portrayed upper class as middle class so much that people in the real middle class people and below lost their identity. A middle class person cannot afford higher studies unless he gets a good rank, family doesn't own a house there is only 1 scooter/Activa or none. You buy second hand books and if someone you're family have health problems you're screwed because of medical bills. Basically you walk your life on a tight rope you can't risk to make riskier decisions because every decision you make impacts your family.
If family doesn't own a house, a vehicle and yearly income is less than 6lacs, that family isn't middle class. Middle Income and Middle Class are different. Even upper middle class can't afford Harvard. Dreams of foreign universities are mostly false. They set you up for years of student loans and life struggles. It's better to get an Indian degree and start your own business and make your way up. It's easier said than done but it's a lot easier than falling into debts brought about by western dreams.

I think there are more things to consider. I'm a Nepalese and the process here and in India are almost the same. The thing is, not everybody goes to Ivy League. Most of the families who earn 30k rupees like you mentioned do not opt for $50k colleges. One of my friend got hefty amount of scholarship and has to pay $2000 out of $25,000 as his tuition fee. My university in Canada costs around $11k per year as well. Getting back to your point, yes it is definitely not worth it to choose Ivy League and disregard someone's financial situation. But I do think that foreign education is definitely worth it if planned correctly.
Let's not forget that most ivy leagues have need blind admissions and would cover the tuition if your household income is below certain level. Ivy league colleges might actually be most affordable colleges in the US if you take into account the financial aid
Ivy League Colleges admission hasn't been about education for a long time. Harvard is about connections. Heck, you don't even need to graduate from Harvard to make it big. It's that you are surrounded by rich people who will fund your ideas in the hopes that you make them rich. That's the whole point of these Ivy League colleges - to make the connections with the movers and shakers of the world.
that is not true, sure connections can help you get in but what they really look for is if you have done something different or you have something unique for example if you helped start an non-profit of some sort or you are your states best pianist to name a few. All this on top of academic excellence. The reason they are on the top is cause of this, which also leads to cutting edge research.

Why you see more rich kids in Harvard is cause they have more resources growing up. Academic success in Highschool is not related to success in the real world. You get connection in the sense that the people in your graduating class at Harvard are likely to end up huge personalities in their respective fields.
I belong to the state of Punjab. Back in 2018 I had 70 classmate in class 12th and now 69 of them are in Canada. Each one of them spent around 25-30 Lakh. I don't have rich parents or rich blood relative in abroad, so I am here 😁 #engineer

I never liked the idea of going to USA/Canada for higher education because of the reasons you've mentioned in this video. But mostly because I feel it is my responsibility and duty as a citizen of this country to actually make it a better place to live, than go outside the country, and then on my "comeback" I curse my own country saying, "when will this place change?!!". That is why European universities (Germany,Poland, France, Norway etc) are attracting more Indian students due to free education or very minimal fees. The degree they provide is also really worthy and recognised worldwide.

In india, nowadays software engineers are easily getting 20-30 LPA packages and because the cost is living is so cheap in india ( trust me when i say this ) , people are living very comfortable life and totally makes sense to not go for abroad. i might decide to come back in 2-3 yrs of gaining corporate experience.

My mom wanted me to go abroad to study, and i directly said no. She said, we'll take a loan and you can pay it back with your income, i said there's too much risk and it's just not happening. Basically Going to USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia for studies, is for people who have a *Minimum of 5 Crores lying in their bank* besides owning property and car.
As advice from a former college student who is in Canada, here's what I've learned: Firstly: this video is spot on. Ivy League and prestigious Uni's are there only for the networks and prestige. It looks hot on your resume and you get to meet people with connections. However, with such a connected world, Uni's no longer can say they have a lockdown on those benefits. Also, don't forget the fact that having "Harvard" or some other prestigious uni on your resume is only gonna last so long. After about 4-5 years, no one's gonna care what school you went to. At that point, it's all about what positions you've been in/what you've done. Secondly: don't go straight to uni/college after completing high school. Go get a job and get some real-world experience. Get your hands dirty and learn what it's like to be an adult. Also, go make an earning. There's nothing like earning your own money, learning to manage it, buying your own stuff (and not asking your parents for money all the time). Furthermore, while you earn (and hopefully save), learn what types of careers you like. Then, if your future career requires higher education, learn the most efficient route to get educated and pursue it. Don't forget that there are employers out there that are willing to pay for education (in exchange for completing a set amount of years with their company). Plus, tons of government programs provide grants/scholarships for higher ed (especially if you're looking at studying a STEM stream). Thirdly: unless you're going into a career as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc, so much of whatever knowledge you want to gain can be learned online and you don't need to have a degree. Don't be afraid of certifications and diplomas that can teach you everything you need to know in much less than 4 years (and for much much less $$$$$). Also, in the real world (especially if you're going into a field like tech) it's not what you know, it's what you can show. It won't matter that you have a Masters from Harvard, if you can't build a simple program, you're not gonna get hired. And real-world experience comes from...the real world. Not sitting in a classroom behind textbooks. This is why I'm such a strong advocate for hands-on learning, labs, and internships. So, if you do decide to pursue higher education, make sure your program has some sort of internship or project that you can present to a future employer. Finally: I feel like the "degree mindset" is from the older generations. It wasn't a bad idea, but now that we have the interwebs, info is open and available. There's a new definition of higher education and eventually, reality is going to have to reflect that.
I was born in a poverty where i had to go to public toilets everyday and didn't have concrete walls and i can vouch for the fact that education was the only reason why I'm out of poverty Today. And i would request all people below poverty line to give your 100% to complete graduation.
The thing is, harvard is also a pretty generous school. It is a need blind school which means that if you get in, and if your family's annual income is less than 40k, you get free admission, hostel, visa ect. less than 90K, you get free tuition. Most of the students who are not in the dean's list or recruted atheletes, have scholarships, and harvard first admits the student and then decides apon the fee structure. Please give full facts.

MBBS or MD AKA basic medical degree is nowadays uniformed all over the world....so getting it from any University is fine as long as your University is recognised. By the way are you currently a medical student?
@@DonMajio you still have to crack FMGE + NEET PG both together to pursue md in India after pursuing a medical degree in some other country and you have to crack USMLE steps to do md in US. It's get pretty hard to settle in India after doing a medical degree. I am not doing MBBS currently.

also, I believe that many colleges' application fees are a good source of revenue for them. For eg: roughly 55000-60000 students apply to Harvard every year, with each application fee cost being 85$, which is equal to 4675000 - 5100000 dollars per year

I too have realised this in my journey of pursuing an MBA. US does give returns but when compared to the investment it's not the best option! There are many options in Europe, Australia, Canada, New zealand and of course India! The return is much better when compared to the investment! Also, if you go off of the rankings remember this, rankings are mostly given by US companies with biases and the components which increase ranking are quite arbitrary and often unfairly inclined to help US universities score better! Jaago, Dekho, Padho fir decide karo!
Europe and Canada are good options but you must be joking about Australia and New Zealand. Australia has only two good schools Melbourne biz school and Australia GSM in Sydney. If you go to NZ you would need to work in a sheep farm post mba.
There is no comparison to USA. Salaries and opportunities are not good in Canada unless you are a truck driver. Alternate option is Europe but you have to learn a new language and face hidden racism. Australia is a middle class option. New Zealand is said to have very few options but Indians there seem happy.
@@tindrums having lived in both US and Canada. I was drawing the same salary in both countries as I went through my US company. But the life in Canada is much more relaxed with health and education mostly taken care by the government and Canada is much more friendly place.

That's what it is good about some prestigious Indian colleges like IITs iim and now DU through cuet that no matter how rich your parents are you can't get admission unless you score good, as you said many rich students goes to foreign for engineering mba and medical because they failed to pass the College admission and they are successful in foreign countries because they expose to things early age, but for people like me or most Indian a good education is the only thing that can help escape poverty.
Its a common story in developing countries, university and colleges are seen as escape from poverty, the day India becomes developed is when The local college will provide same employment opportunities as most prestigious one, only the difference will be that prestigious one's will be more research-oriented than local one.

Selecting through the same old process is not quite true either......most prestigious institutions take direct interviews for higher education. The last point "not being passionate " is a very relative term....it totally depends on person not the colleges they went to.

I have actually been a Devil's Advocate ( pun included ) and argued that colleges in India are also underrated and most of the times Unknown even and the truth is it would be easier to get into the Ivy Leagues than Top Indian Institutes if we only took in the factor of Acceptance Rates which in cases of the IITs and NITs is much lower than these Ivy Leagues.
Yeah but being from one of the top colleges in india I can say even our top schools are no where near most of the good schools in us. Most of the curriculum is outdated, there is not much chance of experiments and of course no intermarrying pf different domain subjects like machine learning in chemical engineering or whatever. And networking effects barring from top5-6 iits, bits isn’t not that good. A college doesn’t become good just by having very low acceptance rate, there are more to it. And don’t even talk about cutting edge researches. That area is mostly failure in India.

Don't forget the reservation politics, where a good student, even if he gets 95+ percentile won't get admitted, but a slacker with 45+ percentile will just because he happened to be of the correct caste

With that being said, to do that, they need tons of money at the first place that's why the are bound to accept the students more whose parents have made a donation. And it is pretty obvious because with their money, the institution is making life-changing inventions. 3rd point: Even though most the indian continental people won't pay the fees, I believe if are paying the fees are 100% worth it if you consider the networking you will be getting alone. Just to let you know, these ivy league alumni is so strong that you are pretty much guaranteed to get a job. You will find people from your University already working at the every top Tech companies (not only tech in every top companies there are tons of ivy League alumni) and more than happy to help you to get there. Like think realistically, that's not a networking that you can make over the web or like simply texting, lol.

Really this Video made my day! I have no regrets about my decision not to go to the USA after getting admitted to my Master's in 2020. Thanks to Covid-19 which made me defer my admission and think about my decision of taking up a 40 Lakh loan. Finally, drop out of my plan of going abroad! Lonely Life, Debt Trapped, and Visa issues were some of my concerns.

The Ivy League sector is dominated by wealth and white supremacy as a whole. Harvard is facing a current lawsuit : Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College which is accusing of Harvard for race discrimination in its admissions process. Particularly among Asians (Indians included). I’m glad you talked about the “middle class” in India because the large disparity of what is, “middle class also occurs in America.” People making $35,000 - $150,000 consider themselves middle class. It is a useless definition. I’m also extremely glad you pointed out Hasán Minhaj’s incorrect correlation causation with salary vs going to college. Yale student here. There is so much misinformation in this video. Here’s a list of what I caught on the first watch through. I’m sure I missed some stuff. 1. 43% of Harvard students are not Dean’s List students. 43% of WHITE Harvard students (Harvard is about 40% white) are legacy, athletic recruits, children of faculty/staff, OR Dean’s List. 2. Yale, Princeton, and Harvard offer financial aid to international students and do not offer loans. If you cannot afford the normal price, you will receive aid. For example, at Yale, if your family makes under $75,000 USD you go for free. Over 60% of students at Yale are not paying the full price. 3. It is not accurate to say that tuition prices are going up because the universities are greedily raising the salary of their administrators. If you look at the graph at 5:45, it’s just showing that universities are expanding their resources for students. This expansion of resources, plus inflation, is the real reason tuition prices are increasing. 4. The Ivy League does not do loans. They do grants. Your financial aid will not come to bite you later. Other American universities do do loans though. 5. Harvard is not a business. Their donations, endowment, and tuition revenue are used for all the costs that involve running a university. Tuition is actually much less than what it costs to educate one student for the school year, so donations and endowment growth is necessary to continue functioning. 6. 9:20 - Harvard’s operating costs were higher during the COVID-19 year. Many many students were NOT at home like the video suggests, but many were. Virtually all facilities except athletic facilities were being used. Some students were sent home because there was not enough housing to socially distance everyone. So Harvard not only had to fund the regular operations of the school year but also had to fund COVID-19 safety on campus and facilitate learning online for students at home. This is true for other Ivy League universities as well. 7. 10:10 - again. IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS DO NOT OFFER LOANS. ONLY GRANTS WITH 0% INTEREST. It’s true that they do not facilitate loans. But that is because they do not OFFER loans AT ALL.
You missed the point entirely. Our argument is that Harvard and other Ivys now have the bank balance to do loans but choose not to. Grants are not universal. Harvard is absolutely a business (nothing wrong with that) Tuition prices are not increasing only because of inflation. Admin costs are ballooning. If you watch the graph closely we COMPARE tuition cost rises to inflation. There’s no correlation. There’s an entire Twitter thread about this.
I will disagree to an extent here (and ofc applaud you for getting some parts right) *First , yes rich folks do send their kids to ivy or top 15 unis in usa , majority of time these are actually degrees in humanities - psychology, philosophy,gender studies ,African studies etc Where the competition isnt exactly cutthroat The parents can brag they sent their kids to usa(actually bought their way in) and the rich unis are happy cos 💰 *However the stem degrees do differ and this is the area where middle class folks actually compete to get into . There's proper research work which goes in these unis + the alumni network + the opportunities which are specifically catered for students from these unis(frontend management consulting, investment banking etc) So stem degrees are worth it , also the reason why indian Americans who opted for these degrees are doing well *now the Indian education system has always been a decade or two behind the western ones. The former relies on textbook rote learning the latter on practical learning. It's an open secret * Regarding the startups , well it's still early . Most of these startups are actually caricatures of the usa ones. What they did 19 years ago we're doing now , also the reason why quite a few of the Indian founders (paytm,simpl,zerodha-one of the founder etc) have either worked or studied In usa * lastly ,yes a good no of the money does go out from here cos of them loans but remember the same money does come back after few years cos remittance and Indians investing back in their home country (as an insurance cos the US visa situation is screwed up lol).it's like a guy taking a 30l loan for mba from iim abc and earning that sum 3 years later

Well researched video, but I think the presenter forgot to mention that most ivies, especially Harvard, have the most generous financial aid program in the country. If you get selected and cannot pay for college, the college will simply not ask you for money. Instead, they provide you with a semesterly stipend. I am a student in one of the Ivy League and I confirm this.
I am American and I am so glad I stumbled across your video. It's funny you mention that everyone in India thinks of themselves as middle class, because my parents grew up in the Philippines and think the same way. I have a family of 6, my parents came here when I was just 2 years old and worked their way from retail employee and bus driver to technical trainer and teacher. But my dad was rarely home, my mom had to go to school while also working to get her masters, and to this day they are tens of thousands of dollars in debt from student and credit card loans. Yet they think of themselves as middle class because we don't live in a trailer park or an apartment, and because they have also seen real poverty from living in the Philippines and know that we have more than that. Despite all this, I have 3 other siblings and they did not save even a dime for any of us to be able to go to college. They just expected us to take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans like they did and end up in the same debt spiral they are in, sure they make a lot of money but most of it goes to paying off their debts.....Thank you for such a great video! It is so infuriating being surrounded by wealthier people who think college is a simple decision. I believe nothing is worth taking on over $60,000 in debt.
debt is good if used properly but debt for college not worth it man, until and unless it's top tier college....and colleges in countries like india, philippines, third world countries(do disrespect but accept the reality) is never worth it, instead take a loan apply for foreign universities US, Canada, Germany, Italy, etc

It's great to get a degree from an amazing college. But, over this past year with numerous conversations with banks, counsellors, professors and students from abroad, professors in India and ex-alumni of some prestigious colleges , I have realised that it's just not worth spending 1-3Cr taking a loan where you'll have to pay almost 3x that amount with the interest rates banks issue. If you don't have a scholarship and you are expected to pay 1Cr+, it is safe to say in most cases that Ivy league or Russell Unis aren't worth that much for bachelors. Ofcourse, this does not apply to all cases and subjects, rather it's a general blanket analysis.

I agree with one thing. A college degree does give a person 90% chance of getting a job than a person with no degree. So many people with degrees are unemployed but it's also in extremely rare cases that a dropout is getting job let alone reaching milestones. Not every dropout is Musk, zuckerberg or Steve jobs
I think most of the people are going to universities as means to leave India. My friends have been pretty clear about this. You can definitely get the same education at a much lower cost in India And although country's economy is booming, human rights are going down hill.

Very good video guys. The level of research, video editing, everything is just great. Being from an engineering background many people that i know of have gone abroad for masters. Its slowly becoming like a mentality here that if you have completed your btech you need to go abroad for masters. Some people have even taken loans on their houses to study abroad. Some of them say there is nothing in India abroad you earn much more,etc.

this video proves one thing when people back home always love to say India is corrupt and nepotism this and that, but they forget how the US and other first-world countries are just the same, but the wealth of that country helps cover up the true issues.
see, the thing about getting opportunities in india is that not every field has opportunities here. medicine, engineering, startups, etc. do have great reach and growth possibilities. however, when we talk about numerous other fields that do not come under the background of science (or business, these days), india severely lacks opportunities. countries like usa and canada do have higher level of opportunities in diverse fields. i'm a student aspiring to become a psychologist, and even though it is a blooming field these days, the opportunities in india are severely less compared to opportunities abroad.

I don't think one should come to US schools unless they have a scholarship or confidence that they will secure one after the first semester. And that is why, grad school is the only time you should come. No point coming for undergrad. There are way more options for supporting your education financially with funding in grad school. And under grad education is very good in 🇮🇳 itself!

Upper middle is a term coined by technically rich (i.e defined as rich w.r.t average earnings of a country/city). The average income of Bengaluru is around 7L p.a. Highest in the country. If you are earning 5-7 times the city's average, I'm sorry to say you aren't middle class. You are technically a millionaire.
There is a huge deviation in terms of necessity and comfort for a person actually in the middle class (earning around 7-12L p.a) and for a person earning say 30L p.a.

In South Asian countries, upper class doesn't mean living in mansions or having lots of supercars, the bar is a lot lower since the average income and quality of life is lower. I literally have a friend who calls himself "upper middle class" while he lives in a good apartment in a wealthy neighborhood and has like 3-4 cars, including a Mercedes.
Most of IIMs have fees more than annual salary of middle class families , but having that brand in resume does help you crack an entry barrier.
Also, IIM admit automatically enables one to get SBI education loan. Even for other top tier colleges.
But IIM's/IIT's dont do partiality. Get a good score in CAT, 10th, 12th and u r in. Also loans r available at reasonable interest rates for such qualified students and the payback period is also around 15 yrs which is far more than actually required cz top tier IIM's are that good in placements with average 17 LPA package.

I left India, though not for the US or Canada. I would have had to take an extremely big loan and pay it off in another 7 years. I went to Europe and did my masters for cheaper than I would have done in India. Honestly, I did not leave India because I wanted to. I tried so hard to score well in MBA for 3 years and I did. But my applications kept getting rejected every damn year because in my 12th I scored exact 80% and not >80. So, in the general category I kept getting rejected. The normal MBA universities were also charging atleast 10 lakh+. I didn't want to spend that amount of money in some mediocre place. You go to better places to build connections and network. I had randomly applied to a couple European universities who had just an online form at the time. They interviewed me and offered me an admission. The total cost of 3 years education was less than my bachelor's!!
Exactly...my situation is similar to yours. I studied at NIT and now thinking of going to Europe for higher studies. It took a year to decide if going to Europe would be worth it or not...and I think it is worth to spend a year to research if going abroad is necessary and I agree it depends upon the person and their situation. You cannot blanket everyone saying "Going abroad is worth it" or "going abroad is not worth it". Every situation is different.

@@ekta9789 8 lakh is not fees. My fees was Rs. 25000 per semester. I managed costs by working on the side. I mentioned in my post. I had a loan of 8 lakh and didn't need a penny more from India. I could earn the money with a job. And in Europe you're expected to work while studying as it is very beneficial to gain experience while studying before applying for a job.

I'm American and while championing sports is fair, I also want to point out that it can be a way to hide bribery. Rich parents sometimes pay coaches to get their child in as an athlete in a less-popular sport. There was a scandal a couple of years ago about it, but in my limited experience it seems to happen WAY more than people think.

I think in the last decade movies have portrayed upper class as middle class so much that people in the real middle class people and below lost their identity. A middle class person cannot afford higher studies unless he gets a good rank, family doesn't own a house there is only 1 scooter/Activa or none. You buy second hand books and if someone you're family have health problems you're screwed because of medical bills. If family doesn't own a house, a vehicle and yearly income is less than 6lacs, that family isn't middle class. Middle Income and Middle Class are different. Even upper middle class can't afford Harvard. Dreams of foreign universities are mostly false. They set you up for years of student loans and life struggles. It's better to get an Indian degree and start your own business and make your way up. It's easier said than done but it's a lot easier than falling into debts brought about by western dreams.

I think there are more things to consider. I'm a Nepalese and the process here and in India are almost the same. The thing is, not everybody goes to Ivy League. Most of the families who earn 30k rupees like you mentioned do not opt for $50k colleges. One of my friend got hefty amount of scholarship and has to pay $2000 out of $25,000 as his tuition fee. My university in Canada costs around $11k per year as well. Getting back to your point, yes it is definitely not worth it to choose Ivy League and disregard someone's financial situation. But I do think that foreign education is definitely worth it if planned correctly.
Let's not forget that most ivy leagues have need blind admissions and would cover the tuition if your household income is below certain level. Ivy league colleges might actually be most affordable colleges in the US if you take into account the financial aid

Ivy League Colleges admission hasn't been about education for a long time.
Harvard is about connections.
Heck, you don't even need to graduate from Harvard to make it big. It's that you are surrounded by rich people who will fund your ideas in the hopes that you make them rich.
That's the whole point of these Ivy League colleges - to make the connections with the movers and shakers of the world.
that is not true, sure connections can help you get in but what they really look for is if you have done something different or you have something unique for example if you helped start an non-profit of some sort or you are your states best pianist to name a few. All this on top of academic excellence. The reason they are on the top is cause of this, which also leads to cutting edge research.

Why you see more rich kids in Harvard is cause they have more resources growing up. Academic success in Highschool is not related to success in the real world. You get connection in the sense that the people in your graduating class at Harvard are likely to end up huge personalities in their respective fields.

I never liked the idea of going to USA/Canada for higher education because of the reasons you've mentioned in this video. Thanks for giving clarity to those who are planning to go abroad without thinking it through
My mom wanted me to go abroad to study, and i directly said no. She said, we'll take a loan and you can pay it back with your income, i said there's too much risk and it's just not happening.
Basically Going to USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia for studies, is for people who have a *Minimum of 5 Crores lying in their bank* besides owning property and car.
As advice from a former college student who is in Canada, here's what I've learned:
Firstly: this video is spot on. Ivy League and prestigious Uni's are there only for the networks and prestige. It looks hot on your resume and you get to meet people with connections. However, with such a connected world, Uni's no longer can say they have a lockdown on those benefits. Also, don't forget the fact that having "Harvard" or some other prestigious uni on your resume is only gonna last so long. After about 4-5 years, no one's gonna care what school you went to. At that point, it's all about what positions you've been in/what you've done.
Secondly: don't go straight to uni/college after completing high school. Go get a job and get some real-world experience. Get your hands dirty and learn what it's like to be an adult. Also, go make an earning. There's nothing like earning your own money, learning to manage it, buying your own stuff (and not asking your parents for money all the time). Furthermore, while you earn (and hopefully save), learn what types of careers you like. Then, if your future career requires higher education, learn the most efficient route to get educated and pursue it. Don't forget that there are employers out there that are willing to pay for education (in exchange for completing a set amount of years with their company). Plus, tons of government programs provide grants/scholarships for higher ed (especially if you're looking at studying a STEM stream).
Thirdly: unless you're going into a career as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc, so much of whatever knowledge you want to gain can be learned online and you don't need to have a degree. Don't be afraid of certifications and diplomas that can teach you everything you need to know in much less than 4 years (and for much much less $$$$$). Also, in the real world (especially if you're going into a field like tech) it's not what you know, it's what you can show. It won't matter that you have a Masters from Harvard, if you can't build a simple program, you're not gonna get hired. And real-world experience comes from...the real world. Not sitting in a classroom behind textbooks. This is why I'm such a strong advocate for hands-on learning, labs, and internships. So, if you do decide to pursue higher education, make sure your program has some sort of internship or project that you can present to a future employer.
Finally: I feel like the "degree mindset" is from the older generations. It wasn't a bad idea, but now that we have the interwebs, info is open and available. There's a new definition of higher education and eventually, reality is going to have to reflect that.

The thing is, harvard is also a pretty generous school. It is a need blind school which means that if you get in, and if your family's annual income is less than 40k, you get free admission, hostel, visa ect. less than 90K, you get free tuition. Most of the students who are not in the dean's list or recruted atheletes, have scholarships, and harvard first admits the student and then decides apon the fee structure. Please give full facts.

It's the same in India with private universities. There is a sharp decline in quality education. And the education system has been transformed from a societal growth society to a money minting business, Where the more money you pay the better placement you get. Take me back to ancient Indus valley civilization Gurukuls were the best education system humans have ever discover where practical knowledge is passed on to the students along with advanced theory and how to apply it in practical daily life.

An important factor that has not been considered is that top-tier Indian colleges have very few seats and the reservation policy.
I wanted to pursue a medical degree here in India but always thought of going to abroad felt kind of guilty for not choosing to go abroad to study. This video really gave me a sense of relief 😌 Thank you so much. You did an amazing job in this video.
MBBS or MD AKA basic medical degree is nowadays uniformed all over the world....so getting it from any University is fine as long as your University is recognised.

@@DonMajio you still have to crack FMGE + NEET PG both together to pursue md in India after pursuing a medical degree in some other country and you have to crack USMLE steps to do md in US. It's get pretty hard to settle in India after doing a medical degree.

also, I believe that many colleges' application fees are a good source of revenue for them. For eg: roughly 55000-60000 students apply to Harvard every year, with each application fee cost being 85$, which is equal to 4675000 - 5100000 dollars per year

I too have realised this in my journey of pursuing an MBA. US does give returns but when compared to the investment it's not the best option! There are many options in Europe, Australia, Canada, New zealand and of course India! The return is much better when compared to the investment! Also, if you go off of the rankings remember this, rankings are mostly given by US companies with biases and the components which increase ranking are quite arbitrary and often unfairly inclined to help US universities score better! Jaago, Dekho, Padho fir decide karo!
Europe and Canada are good options but you must be joking about Australia and New Zealand. Australia has only two good schools Melbourne biz school and Australia GSM in Sydney. If you go to NZ you would need to work in a sheep farm post mba.
There is no comparison to USA. Salaries and opportunities are not good in Canada unless you are a truck driver. Alternate option is Europe but you have to learn a new language and face hidden racism. Australia is a middle class option. New Zealand is said to have very few options but Indians there seem happy.
@@tindrums having lived in both US and Canada. I was drawing the same salary in both countries as I went through my US company. But the life in Canada is much more relaxed with health and education mostly taken care by the government and Canada is much more friendly place.

That's what it is good about some prestigious Indian colleges like IITs iim and now DU through cuet that no matter how rich your parents are you can't get admission unless you score good, as you said many rich students goes to foreign for engineering mba and medical because they failed to pass the College admission and they are successful in foreign countries because they expose to things early age, but for people like me or most Indian a good education is the only thing that can help escape poverty.
Its a common story in developing countries, university and colleges are seen as escape from poverty, the day India becomes developed is when The local college will provide same employment opportunities as most prestigious one, only the difference will be that prestigious one's will be more research-oriented than local one.

I have actually been a Devil's Advocate ( pun included ) and argued that colleges in India are also underrated and most of the times Unknown even and the truth is it would be easier to get into the Ivy Leagues than Top Indian Institutes if we only took in the factor of Acceptance Rates which in cases of the IITs and NITs is much lower than these Ivy Leagues.
Yeah but being from one of the top colleges in india I can say even our top schools are no where near most of the good schools in us.
Most of the curriculum is outdated, there is not much chance of experiments and of course no intermarrying pf different domain subjects like machine learning in chemical engineering or whatever.
And networking effects barring from top5-6 iits, bits isn’t not that good.
A college doesn’t become good just by having very low acceptance rate, there are more to it.
And don’t even talk about cutting edge researches. That area is mostly failure in India.
What differentiates between USA and India is Infrastructure for R&D. There is a huge lack of support for R&D in India.

2nd point : Compare IITs, NITs and Harvard including all the ivy League universities. Why Harvard ranked so high? Because they spend tons of money into the research field and it is what expected from a ideal University. Thus, most of the invention even the COVID-19 vaccine came from Harvard. With that being said, to do that, they need tons of money at the first place that's why the are bound to accept the students more whose parents have made a donation. And it is pretty obvious because with their money, the institution is making life-changing inventions.
3rd point: Even though most the indian continental people won't pay the fees, I believe if are paying the fees are 100% worth it if you consider the networking you will be getting alone. Just to let you know, these ivy league alumni is so strong that you are pretty much guaranteed to get a job. You will find people from your University already working at the every top Tech companies (not only tech in every top companies there are tons of ivy League alumni) and more than happy to help you to get there. Like think realistically, that's not a networking that you can make over the web or like simply texting, lol.

Really this Video made my day! I have no regrets about my decision not to go to the USA after getting admitted to my Master's in 2020. Thanks to Covid-19 which made me defer my admission and think about my decision of taking up a 40 Lakh loan. Finally, drop out of my plan of going abroad! Lonely Life, Debt Trapped, and Visa issues were some of my concerns.

Yale student here. There is so much misinformation in this video. Here’s a list of what I caught on the first watch through. I’m sure I missed some stuff.
1. 43% of Harvard students are not Dean’s List students. 43% of WHITE Harvard students (Harvard is about 40% white) are legacy, athletic recruits, children of faculty/staff, OR Dean’s List.
2. Yale, Princeton, and Harvard offer financial aid to international students and do not offer loans. If you cannot afford the normal price, you will receive aid. For example, at Yale, if your family makes under $75,000 USD you go for free. Over 60% of students at Yale are not paying the full price.
3. It is not accurate to say that tuition prices are going up because the universities are greedily raising the salary of their administrators. If you look at the graph at 5:45, it’s just showing that universities are expanding their resources for students. This expansion of resources, plus inflation, is the real reason tuition prices are increasing.
4. The Ivy League does not do loans. They do grants. Your financial aid will not come to bite you later. Other American universities do do loans though.
5. Harvard is not a business. Their donations, endowment, and tuition revenue are used for all the costs that involve running a university. Tuition is actually much less than what it costs to educate one student for the school year, so donations and endowment growth is necessary to continue functioning.
6. 9:20 - Harvard’s operating costs were higher during the COVID-19 year. Many many students were NOT at home like the video suggests, but many were. Virtually all facilities except athletic facilities were being used. Some students were sent home because there was not enough housing to socially distance everyone. So Harvard not only had to fund the regular operations of the school year but also had to fund COVID-19 safety on campus and facilitate learning online for students at home. This is true for other Ivy League universities as well.
7. 10:10 - again. IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS DO NOT OFFER LOANS. ONLY GRANTS WITH 0% INTEREST. It’s true that they do not facilitate loans. But that is because they do not OFFER loans AT ALL.
You missed the point entirely. Our argument is that Harvard and other Ivys now have the bank balance to do loans but choose not to. Grants are not universal.
Harvard is absolutely a business (nothing wrong with that)
Tuition prices are not increasing only because of inflation. Admin costs are ballooning. If you watch the graph closely we COMPARE tuition cost rises to inflation. There’s no correlation. There’s an entire Twitter thread about this.

*First , yes rich folks do send their kids to ivy or top 15 unis in usa , majority of time these are actually degrees in humanities - psychology, philosophy,gender studies ,African studies etc Where the competition isnt exactly cutthroat
The parents can brag they sent their kids to usa(actually bought their way in) and the rich unis are happy cos 💰
*However the stem degrees do differ and this is the area where middle class folks actually compete to get into .
There's proper research work which goes in these unis + the alumni network + the opportunities which are specifically catered for students from these unis(frontend management consulting, investment banking etc)
So stem degrees are worth it , also the reason why indian Americans who opted for these degrees are doing well
*now the Indian education system has always been a decade or two behind the western ones. The former relies on textbook rote learning the latter on practical learning. It's an open secret
* Regarding the startups , well it's still early . Most of these startups are actually caricatures of the usa ones. What they did 19 years ago we're doing now , also the reason why quite a few of the Indian founders (paytm,simpl,zerodha-one of the founder etc) have either worked or studied In usa
* lastly ,yes a good no of the money does go out from here cos of them loans but remember the same money does come back after few years cos remittance and Indians investing back in their home country (as an insurance cos the US visa situation is screwed up lol).it's like a guy taking a 30l loan for mba from iim abc and earning that sum 3 years later

Well researched video, but I think the presenter forgot to mention that most ivies, especially Harvard, have the most generous financial aid program in the country. If you get selected and cannot pay for college, the college will simply not ask you for money. Instead, they provide you with a semesterly stipend. I am a student in one of the Ivy League and I confirm this.
I am American and I am so glad I stumbled across your video. It's funny you mention that everyone in India thinks of themselves as middle class, because my parents grew up in the Philippines and think the same way. I have a family of 6, my parents came here when I was just 2 years old and worked their way from retail employee and bus driver to technical trainer and teacher. But my dad was rarely home, my mom had to go to school while also working to get her masters, and to this day they are tens of thousands of dollars in debt from student and credit card loans. Yet they think of themselves as middle class because we don't live in a trailer park or an apartment, and because they have also seen real poverty from living in the Philippines and know that we have more than that. Despite all this, I have 3 other siblings and they did not save even a dime for any of us to be able to go to college. They just expected us to take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans like they did and end up in the same debt spiral they are in, sure they make a lot of money but most of it goes to paying off their debts.....Thank you for such a great video! It is so infuriating being surrounded by wealthier people who think college is a simple decision. I believe nothing is worth taking on over $60,000 in debt.

You should do a similar video on India's Medical education system. Trust me, a lot of people would watch it.
It's great to get a degree from an amazing college. But, over this past year with numerous conversations with banks, counsellors, professors and students from abroad, professors in India and ex-alumni of some prestigious colleges , I have realised that it's just not worth spending 1-3Cr taking a loan where you'll have to pay almost 3x that amount with the interest rates banks issue.
If you don't have a scholarship and you are expected to pay 1Cr+, it is safe to say in most cases that Ivy league or Russell Unis aren't worth that much for bachelors. Ofcourse, this does not apply to all cases and subjects, rather it's a general blanket analysis.

I agree with one thing. A college degree does give a person 90% chance of getting a job than a person with no degree. Irs also a double problem here in quebec because lots of indian think of canada as an english speaking country and sometime get into a french speaking province They are segregated because most of their course is in english, they aren't taught french and quebec people seeing this think they don't want to learn french (altough some just don't care about french wich is important to quebecker, its considered a national pride)

Being from an engineering background many people that i know of have gone abroad for masters. Its slowly becoming like a mentality here that if you have completed your btech you need to go abroad for masters. Some people have even taken loans on their houses to study abroad. Some of them say there is nothing in India abroad you earn much more,etc.

see, the thing about getting opportunities in india is that not every field has opportunities here. medicine, engineering, startups, etc. do have great reach and growth possibilities. however, when we talk about numerous other fields that do not come under the background of science (or business, these days), india severely lacks opportunities. countries like usa and canada do have higher level of opportunities in diverse fields. i'm a student aspiring to become a psychologist, and even though it is a blooming field these days, the opportunities in india are severely less compared to opportunities abroad.

I belive cohort based courses are far better then traditional degree because you get accelerated learning related to industry plus networking
I don't think one should come to US schools unless they have a scholarship or confidence that they will secure one after the first semester. And that is why, grad school is the only time you should come. No point coming for undergrad. There are way more options for supporting your education financially with funding in grad school. And under grad education is very good in 🇮🇳 itself!
