Seeing this particular performance with Jim and Maury finally broke me. Jim talking about a future show and receiving a gold record from Burt brought it all back. My first experience of a loss as a kid. You always vividly remember your first loss the rest of your life.
Jim “spoke” to all of us through his music, didn’t he, eh? Still remember hearing of his sad death too when it happened. My 1st loss as a little girl (12), was my friend Jeanette (12), her mom Jean (32), her little sister (5), all drowned together at the lake. Jeanette was in my blue~bird/camp~fire girl’s group and her mom was assistant leader, my weekly “family” for years. Triple open casket funeral was tough we didn’t have school grief counselor’s then. Am still afraid of large open bodies of water but have snorkeled in Moloka’i & Maui, HI., to try and “face that fear” head on 😔. PeacePeople.
I remember it well myself. I had watched this show--I was in eighth grade, and Jim Croce was my favorite--and then a week later, in school, was told by a friend about the plane crash. I was too young to remember JFK's assassination, and I had only a vague sense in 1968 of the meaning of RFK and MLK, Jr., being killed, but by 1973 I had started forming my own opinions about music, and partially defining myself by them, so the loss of Jim Croce hit me hard.
@ronaldolaquidara64 - I also remember the news about Peter Duel. I wasn't as connected to him as I was to Croce so it didn't hit me quite the same. Coincidentally, I had a schoolmate pass away during summer vacation a few years later, which was a bit unsettling. A kid who had a heart attack.
Sly was entirely his own man im many good ways. It is just a tragedy that, like so many others, the drugs dragged him down. A loss to a lot of us and to he himself.
Incredible. You had to see Sly live to understand why people were not dancing- he mesmerized you and put you in a stone cold trance❤❤❤❤. So many superlatives for do many brilliant artists. Looking back- Almost hard to believe it was real. Thanks Burt - a visionary.
14:45 It's a little eerie how he was lit on only one side and they show his face in shadow. And then the Nov 2 show and gold record announcements....I'm sure there will be some type of tribute next week.
This was the late Jim Croce 2nd & final appearance because on September 20, Jim along with his singing partner died in a plane crash. Croce was 30 years old.
I remember Wesley our babysitter coming over to watch Midnight Special but not charging my mom anything because he couldn't watch it at home and told his parents he was babysitting us. He did that a couple of times, he was really nice and we didn't mind having him around, he didn't Make Us do anything. just watch TV, color, read, listen to music, Watch Midnight Special. LOL those are good memories.

So many amazing guests on this show that I do not want to skip mentioning how wonderful it is to see the Natural Four singing their huge hit. Such a talented group.
What a show! I was not disappointed! That Wilson Picket was amazing! Everybody did a great job! I laughed, I cried, I danced in my seat! Thanks, Midnight Special!✌💜
It's sad that some of these legends are no longer with us. But through these performances, their memory lives on. I've been watching your videos for many, many years now. I would've never imagined that one day there would be a The Midnight Special channel on the internet. And never in my life did I imagine that I would get to see full episodes of this show. I never got to experience that era, that's why this is so special to me. I love this channel, because it gives us something to feel good about, specially in these hard times. A very big THANK YOU to everyone involved for being so generous by making these shows available to us fans. And it's good to know that Mr. Sugarman is alive and well, so that he can see how much we appreciate everything he has done.
Sly and the Family Stone are far out too cool for school and so darn groovy; love this whole show. Bee Gees ‘Lonely Days, Lonely Nights’ was gorgeous~chills inducing! 😅 Thanks MS!
I like seeing everyone playing live on the show every week. Back before stage monitors and ear monitors, everyone had to make it right especially when playing live on the Midnight Special. I used to watch it back when it originally aired.
You are correct that stage monitors were few in those days, but there were stage monitors on this show. In the wide shots of the front circle area, you can see them just peaking over the lip (they weren't up on the floor). This is another testament to the producer Burt Sugarman, who went the whole 10 miles for his outstanding show.
We never had this series in England but, looking back on all these episodes, it's up their with the great TV music shows. Absolutely love watching these.
Another exciting eclectic Friday night lineup, where else can you find the Bee Gees, Wilson Pickett, Jim Croce, Sly and the Fabulous Family Stone, plus Helen Reddy (really) ha yes!
Back in the day, when music was classic music! There was a reason she was the number one selling female singer in the world at the time! Love Helen Reddy!!!
Great music, no auto tune, just pure talent. In high school I hardly ever missed watching The Midnight Special. It is sad that most of these amazing artists are no longer with us. This music is the playlist of my youth and I'm glad that I can relive a piece of those years once more as I sit here again on a Friday night in 2023 and let The Midnight Special shine its ever loving light on me😊
What a fantastic concept ...Live performances from top bands of all fields, except jazz of course,on regular TV free for all...great,great times..Helen Reddy and Sly????? Nothing better...
This is the second time that I recall Curtis Mayfield has been on the show. While I have not come across a song of his I disliked, my favorite is Freddy's Dead. I really wish he would play that at some time. From the episode track listing, it won't be this time. I am still looking forward to his show kickoff set and all the other great guests. This one is star-studded.
Burt was not the intended presenter of the million seller award...Jim was told he was receiving award before show and threatened to walk unless Burt presented the gold record!! I think Burts only appearance Midnight Special....What a Life!!
The late Helen Reddy song "Don't You Mess With A Woman" (from 1973 "Long Hard Climb") is one great song!! I think that Reba McEntire should do the remake!!! Helen did that song on her short lived variety show but not the "Midnight Special".
Thank you for mentioning Helen Reddy, she was a force, wasn’t she? Love her classy 2 piece outfit here, her anthem song for me as a 13 yrs young teen will always be the empowering ‘72 “I Am Woman”. The late Curtis Mayfield did "Right On For The Darkness" near the end of the show. Both The Bee Gees performances are repeated again "Lonely Days" (from Episode 10) & "Run To Me" (from Episode 21). The late Chuck Berry took over the late Jim Croce as host on November 2, 1973 (Episode 40).
The next show from September 21, 1973 sounds like it was a good one. The host is Wilson Pickett, and it also features appearances from Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Canned Heat, The Chi-Lites, Curtis Mayfield, Brenda Patterson, Spooky Tooth, and B.W. Stevenson.

So sad to realize that Jim Croce died just six days later in a plane crash. He had so much left to give us.
He had decided to get off the road & spend more time with his wife & small baby boy too... so sad he didn't get the chance...
Terrible loss
Thankfully he gave us what he could
As well as Maury Muehleisen, his on stage partner.
I remember being 7 y.o. going to school and it cmng over the radio..I liked J.C at that age
Good LORD we had it good!
Still do.
