I am a 70 year old white woman. I have naturally pin straight, baby fine hair. For years, I colored and permed my hair. I was trying to get it to do something that was not "natural" for my hair. Now, I have found a knowledgeable hairdresser who cuts it and shapes it to work what looks good for my individual hair. Finally looks goods! You are so patient and mindful of what your client's needs are. I love watching your videos!
Yeah, lots of hairdressers don’t really know how to handle naturally straight hair. They are used to hair that has some natural volume.
I’m a cosmetologist and I wish I knew how to handle all types of hair. My cosmetology school did not teach us about different hair types. I love learning about EVERYONES hair. Love this. Also very relaxing to watch too!
This is one of my biggest problems with the education we receive. Where I live they teach ONE AFTERNOON on non-European hair types and it drives me crazy. I set out years ago to educate MYSELF, I want to at least know the basics even if i I don’t work with type 4 hair often (my own hair is type 3). The biggest thing for me was asking the owner of a big salon near me about the difference between a “perm” for curls and a “perm” in terms of relaxer. He has no clue. (I know the answer, I was testing him. He failed) that’s sad to me.
I'm a white cosmetology student and my teacher along with about half of my classmates are black so i'm lucky enough that i'm able to learn about textured hair in my school :)

@@sexyramen9504 and that’s what SHOULD happen! I’m so glad it’s not the same everywhere. Realistically it shouldn’t be you that’s lucky - I think we all should be learning these things. I think it’s just historical education (obviously crazily outdated) and laziness to recognise it needs changing. We’ll get there. In the end. Humans can just be a bit slow!!

This video just came up in my feed. Not sure why it did, but I’m glad it did. This was so educational. I am white and have extremely fine hair, but I’m also a retired public school teacher who had to learn from my students about the complexity of black hair care. I remember one student who came in to first period with her hair covered. I started to send her to the office for a dress code violation. (A stupid school policy I had to follow.) She asked me if she could explain before class started. Once she showed me the burns on her scalp, I realized this wasn’t about her being vain andI sent her to a vice principal who could understand and give her a pass to “wear a hat.” That was such an important lesson for me: Listen to the students and hear their experiences, then form your understanding. PLUS YOUR CLIENT LOOKS AMAZING!

I just love watching these videos, as a white woman with very fine hair, it is such an education to see other women's hair transformations and to gain an insight into different perspectives and how to manage different hair types. It is so important to have a hairdresser with the skills and understanding needed to be happy with your hair, which goes a long way to helping you feel good about yourself
Her hair looks stunning. My 25-year-old adoptive son has been growing his hair so that he can have natural dreads. He's always just had it a short razor cut. It has been the bane of my life watching him over the months as he grows it out, but wants to keep it neat, and then just rips a wide tooth comb through it in about two minutes. I literally cringe as I hear him snapping the strands and all I see is bits of hair flying everywhere. But, having watched many videos now on how he should be moisturising and caring for his hair I think I have got through to him that all he is doing is destroying it. He is actually trying to follow some of the tips (picked up from watching hairdressing videos), that I give him now. And I no longer hear hair snapping.
hey, it's not called dreads or dreadlocs, it's just locs, the history behind dreadlocs refer to locs being "dreadful" so the word locs would be better(The reason why it's not talked about enough is because many people don't know about this part of history) but if your son is ok with it, then thats all that matters

@@issaflo1224 Just calling them a “loc” could be very confusing out of understood context. A collection of hair is called a “lock” (think Goldilocks and the Three Bears), so even if you wanted to just shorten it to “loc” if “loc” is spoken out loud it just sounds as if it’s referring to a generic clump of hair (any type of hair clumped).

From 21 to 55 I have permed, colored my pressed my hair!! It took 11/2 years for all of that to grow out!! I decided to get dreads and love it, at 61 that salt and pepper looks gorgeous on me!!
Perm means adding curls and texture. Relaxer RELAXES the natural curl or wave to become straight.
I have a good friend who did the same and she’s never going back to all that effort. She’s 70 and has gorgeous silver dreads.
Going to be 50 in a couple months and have been dying my hair since a teen and currently growing it out half way their and i absolutely love my natural color.
Quit dyeing mine 20 years ago.

This is exactly what my hairdresser did with my hair, I had relaxed it a year, she cut off all the relaxed hair and told me to grow it and take care of curls...and NEVER to relax it again...I love my frizzy curls and haven't touched a straightener in 2 years. Nothing like natural hair 😍 thank you for sharing ❤

Natural hair is, Nappy, course hair for some 🤔🙄!! It's NOT easy having thick curly course hair, reasons why some perm theirs.

I know that our hair types are not the same,however, I have super thick curly long long long hair. I have been getting my hair professionally dusted. That means my hairdresser cuts my hair dry. Takes small sections , gently twists them so the dead ends stick out and dusts the split ends off, finishes with a small 1/4" trim of the ends.
I guarantee that when you cut the relaxer out and do a dusting every 8-12 weeks your hair will grow faster and healthier. Good luck ladies. Salt and pepper is a great look on the ladies too. Seriously my silver fox long locks are a show stopper. Last measure it was 40". If you can't to the "50 strokes" - the whole gist is to stimulate the blood. Maybe flip your head down and do a serious scalp massage with your fingers.
I recommend the book “Curly Girl” for anyone with slight waves to the tightest kinks.
Relaxed my hair from the age of 12 to 38. Finally went natural and got all the relaxed ends cut a couple weeks ago and very excited for this natural journey now at the age of 40! It'll take some getting used to but looking forward to healthy natural hair without any chemicals and not having my scalp on fire from those relaxer touch-ups!
We pretty much went the same length of time having processed Hair. I processed My Hair from 11 to 39 years of age. I stopped chemical processing about 2 Months before turning 40. My Hair Texture/Type is like Tia and Tamera Mowry’s, and more often than not, many people never understood why I processed My Hair in the first place since it was soft, curly, and fine. I just always preferred My Hair straight, and chemical processing was the better way to get longer lasting results on that. But I knew I couldn’t go on doing that forever, and honestly didn’t want to. I never gave My Real Texture a chance. I finally broke free right before turning 40. I’m now 42 and My Hair is completely back to it’s original texture. I couldn’t be happier with My Hair now, and it’s the healthiest it’s been in a very long time. I don’t regret My Time spent straightening My Hair. It was fun to experiment while it lasted. But it also helps Me to appreciate My Natural Hair a lot more, too.
What does ‘relaxed’ mean?
Not quite the same, but I’ve let my hair go grey and am loving not going to the salon for three hours to be blonde! I also let my hair stay curly (VERY curly) as at 64, I can’t be doing with all the faffing about! 😁
What does "relaxed hair" mean versus natural hair?
@@Stranger11105I think they are trying to make up some slang stuff. I'm guessing what they are talking about is hair straightening but for whatever reason they don't want to say straightened hair versus nappy hair so instead they say relaxed hair versus natural hair.
11:41 here is a good example of what I mean. I've noticed that certain people like to pull sang or made up terminology out of their rear end to make it sound like they know what they're talking about and other people in the community rather than ask for an elaboration or clarification just go with it out of fear of sounding stupid and this is how the Urban Dictionary writes itself.
Dang her natural hair was GORGEOUS. The volume and curls were fire, even though it hadn’t been doing this for very long! Over time I imagine her hair will be even more beautiful and vital.

I went back natural 16 years ago and a lot of the information you provided I’ve had to learn on my own over the years, and I must say I have yet to come across another stylist who properly educated their viewers like this. Thank you! It shows how much you care about making your clients happy and maintaining both their hair health and retention/length goals. Your client’s hair came out beautiful.

When I adopted my children, I walked into a local hairdressers in my hometown in Ireland, and asked for help! I got classes on how to look after their hair, without this, I know i would have been a walking disaster. 20 years my children still go there, same family own! They call my children their Irish babies!!

My daughter, a curly redhead that was so thick and hard to manage. I asked a lady who, like me, was shopping in the mall, how she cared for her mixed race children's hair. Her sweet advice changed my relationship with my daughter . Peace in my home. I WAS DOING IT ALL WRONG.! ( My own hair is straight and thick, and I don't even need to comb it. )
I can't believe the transformation. Her hairdo at the end is gorgeous! I'm not black, so I don't know about working with that kind of hair, but I love the final result. I especially like the care the hairdresser took to preserve as much length as possible, doing only a "trim" of the last bits of "relaxed" hair.

Honest question: What is natural hair? In my mind, natural hair is shampooed and towel dried. Anything else you do to your hair makes it “unnatural”. Loved the results.
I transitioned to natural and my hair was already short. I had to do a big chop. It is my second year. It took me a year to get my hair back its original length and healthy. My hair is to my shoulders now. The struggle was real finding products that worked for me and having to walk away from people that did my hair for years because they didn't understand my hair. I am still on the search for someone who does natural hair and knows how to treat natural when putting in weaves, but until then I just it myself. Good luck you guys and remember you're all beautiful!

I'm 50yrs old, was raised on a military base in North Carolina. I remember being in locker room with my classmates and being just amazed by all the designs and styles that the black girls could wear. I always asked alot of questions because I was just in awe of how beautiful and versatile their hair could be and told them so. Once some of the girls braided my hair for me and my straight,boring thin hair looked so pretty! Wow, that was in 6grade and I still remember how sweet these girls were and how beautiful I felt. I have curly hair and I hate it! I don't get many styles, I still have tangles and knots after I've been brushing my hair for like 6 hours, It's a nightmare. You are a lucky beautiful girl and to all genders with straight hair. Really wish I had straight hair!

@@saymyname2417 Perhaps. If you have curly hair and you straighten it by any means, it's not your natural hair. It's still your hair but you've altered it from what it naturally does as it grows out of your head. A more accurate term would be 'my own' hair.

I was 36 years relaxed.....Then just shaved my hair all off (literally a BIG chop!!!). I had no patience for the transition! One part of my hair needed to be wet to curl, while the other part needed to stay dry. Nope! That was like 5 years ago. I have no regrets. Thank you for your knowledge and information! ❤️
I did the same exzact thing2 during now the pandemic. hair relax since I was 18 n now I’m 62 completely natural n curly never put a comb n it since just moisturizer n fingers I wanted2 get up n go like the boys I call it wash takes a few minutes now n moisturizer total 7 minutes n I’m out the 🚪 door I don’t regret either I have many pictures with very long hair I can look at them which I don’t but when I want2 there hear know 1 believe I would do it my nephew kept ima cut ur hair he kept beating round the bush I showed him I was getting inpatient I went n my restroom took a seat nfront of the mirror n started chopping away that woke him up he had2 c it2 believe it that he finish the job I had2 get use2 it like thinking it was still long n that cold weather wrapped round my head step right back nside that 🚪 door 4a hat 🧢 n scarf bless u
What does it mean that hair was relaxed or someone has a transition?
@@joannadrabik1601 relaxed hair means your hair is chemically straightened. Transitioning means you’re going from relaxed hair to natural hair.
@@joannadrabik1601 Like nearly permanently straightened or kind of changing your hair texture and pattern. Transitioning is when the hair is trying to go back to its normal texture which is very difficult for both relaxed and natural hair textures

I’m 14 months into my transition after being relaxed for 40 years! I’m keeping my hair pressed and trimming gradually. Once the transition is complete, I will remain a “straight natural.” 😊
Did a gradual chop over ten years ago. Wore Afro to work, small one but I surprised by the compliments received. Letting go the relaxed hair was not as hard as short hair was fun. Now I am gray, and it’s wiry unruly hair I have issues with. Regular flat iron and trims help a lot, with the steam conditioner

@@Bibitiebabitieboo Yes meaning keeping my hair pressed like I did when I was girl. My hair was washed and pressed every two weeks until I snuck off with my friend and got a perm (relaxer) in 8th grade. Hair was always thick and healthy. 😊

I’m 2 years and one month into my transition. I’ve been getting pressed once a month and trimmed every 3-4 months. I have maybe 2 inches of straight hair left in certain places. The relaxer ways okay for some years but once it started to do more harm than good, my stylist encouraged me to let it go especially because my hair could be maintained when pressed. My hair is the healthiest it’s been in a very long time.

I transitioned for 9 months. I cut off the remaining relaxed ends, looked at it & was shocked I was holding on to this dead hair & that's exactly what it was. I'm 20 months into my journey ...I started at the top of my eyebrow & at shoulder length now. I am a twist out girl, love the texture & learning my hair. Today I got caught in the rain for a couple minutes & I didn't run....it felt great & got some natural moisture on my strands. I shook it out a bit & kept it moving...& it still looked great...a result of a great moisturized twist out.
I’m a 44 year old white woman with naturally straight and boring hair. I want to tell you that as a child, most of my black friends had natural hair and then by high school almost all of them had very unnatural styles.
I’ve watched Chris Rock’s movie Good Hair which was so eye opening. I always wondered why my black friends altered their natural hair. Whenever I asked, they’d just basically tell me “to look good” which was confusing because in my opinion, natural looked better.
It was funny that at the time (90’s) the white girls were getting tight perms!
Im 15 and im currently on 10 months of transitioning, and it's not easy but in a month or more i will get my big chop. im very excited.
I have been relaxed for 40 years.I have been transitioning for 2 years. It has been a tough road. I have watched so many videos stating “no heat during the transition “. Me too. Started December 2019 couldn't afford it any more. I cut off the ends and trimmed. What a mess. Its growing like crazy. I use miss here shampoo and a biotin shampoo and oil. As it cut the ends its getting fuller and press with the yellow Ultra Sheen. I forgot my texture on 30 years!. Now its thick and full. Plus I worked graveyard so tired and exhausted. I also take biotin pill too.

I just hit five years into my natural hair journey, it took about 6 months to transition and I big chopped. My 4c hair took alot but I learned to love my hair and myself ❤️ dont give up yall my hair has never looked better

You are so informative and talented. Many professionals tell people what they want to hear or do quick fixes to the detriment of the hair. You keep the clients' goals in mind while providing them the best way to get there. It really is an art.

I transitioned after 6 months. Couldn't take the breakage and the different textures anymore. I don't straighten my hair and have no plans to do so. I watched natural hair videos for two years before taking the plunge. I liked the look but did not want to spend the time young women today spend doing their hair. I finally decided that I didn't have to do all that just to be natural. Two and a half years after the big chop, I could stand a cut (a professional cut, not one of my "at home" jobs) but other than that, it looks okay and I'm happy I made the change after decades of relaxers, Jheri curls, hot combs, etc.
What do you do with your hair. Just leave it out? My last stint at natural lasted 7years but I always felt and looked unkempt, rough.
@@sandybrown3879 I know what you mean about the look, but when I decided to do this I resolved just to deal with it however it looked. I wear it loose after washing for 2-3 days, then tie it on top of my head for the bushy effect or a top-knot usually without bangs, until I wash it again. I wash it weekly, although I washed it 2x week when I was still working. I retired in 2020 which is another reason why I don't sweat how it looks too much. I was more concerned when I had to go to the office every day (I did work from home a few months before retiring).
It looked good as a TWA after the big chop and even for the next 8 months or so. Not too short or long and really cute, but I had to style it every day. And I mean "style' not just brush or comb. I let it grow out so I wouldn't have to do that (yes, I am a lazy natural). Now I can put it up when I don't want to be bothered, or when it is dirty since I don't keep adding product to dirty hair.
BTW, I have the time to fool with my hair--I am retired. But I can't stand doing it--so I don't.
@@maloyo7901 Thanks for the reply. Resolving to deal with it and accepting my 4C hair. There lies the answer. I'm also retired, and can't stand all the twisting , and breaking so it does not all go into a topknot. And so many products that are expensive but dont suit me. Im 6 weeks relaxed. So much easier to handle. But I'll just let it grow and go for a twa.

Oh wow. Her hair looked SO much better even before you got to cutting the style in. So so shiny! Looked so much healthier already. And dry shampoo is a godsend for getting rid of oils.. lots of disabled people like me use it a lot.

I transitioned for 13 months. Big chopped this past July. Was relaxed for about 37 years... trying to get to know my new mane..... so far it's been a great experience.... Cant wait to see what the future holds

Omg this reminds me of my second go round with transitioning & sooo many big mess ups on my end. I cannot agree more with going ahead & doing big chop if you are wanting to continue to be natural! & first & foremost pick a side & stick to it!! I cut tons of my hair off one time after being frustrated because I couldn’t detangle it after trying to wash it!! It gets matted sooo bad & since I’ve quit hanging on to those damaged ends my hair is finally getting back to how it used to be!

This was really interesting to watch, this lady's hair turned out gorgeous. When I was in college, a roommate I had would invite 2 or 3 of her friends over for a hair styling party right before the weekend and our room would smell like burnt hair by midnight. Since my hair is rather straight, I had never used a flat iron and always wondered how much damage they were doing to their hair. They always looked good in the end though!
If you could smell their hair burning, the answer is ALOT.

I have a curly natural hair and I'm almost 30 yrs of relaxing. I'd just watch a video of a blogger using cgm (curly girl method) after I watch it I starting to embrace my natural curly. And now I'm now 1 week using cgm and I can see the difference. Using cgm for natural curly is amazing it helps my confidence too and I love my curly natural hair now unlike before.
