  • SH-60 Helicopter operations off the coast of Hawaii with the USS Rodney M. Davis. The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk (or Sea Hawk) is a twin turboshaft engine, multi-mission United States Navy helicopter based on the United States Army UH-60 Black Hawk and a member of the Sikorsky S-70 family. The most significant modifications are the folding main rotor and a hinged tail to reduce its footprint aboard ships.
The U.S. Navy uses the H-60 airframe under the model designations SH-60B, SH-60F, HH-60H, MH-60R, and MH-60S. Able to deploy aboard any air-capable frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship, amphibious assault ship, Littoral combat ship or aircraft carrier, the Seahawk can handle anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), naval special warfare (NSW) insertion, search and rescue (SAR), combat search and rescue (CSAR), vertical replenishment (VERTREP), and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC). - Wikipedia

Some of the CLEANEST flight deck gear I have ever seen - I spent 8 years bouncing on and off FFG decks.

RMD used to embark TWO HSL-51 WARLORDS helos routinely when homeported in Yokosuka. For WESTPAC 1999, we had two from HSL-45 WOLFPACK.
All other Everett cruises, we just embarked one helo. So around 2000 is when the starboard helo hangar became the gym / garbage dump (when too close to shore).

There is no bigger adrenaline rush in this world like being on that deck when that helo comes in. I worked as a blue shirt, running chocks n chains for four years. I was marveling at how slow and sloppy these guys were but realized they were training. Maybe even their first time on deck. Our crew was DAMN fast. We had the wheels chocked and both chains set in MAYBE 15-20 seconds, and that's with only one man per side. That was such a cool job!

The helo being onboard for deployment was cool, but I'm still a little salty they took away one of our gym bays to house the thing. Dadgum flight crew and their lawn chairs :D

Either training for ship’s crew in flight deck ops or their air det not embarked. Normally the air det handles flight ops including visiting helo which this appeared to be.

Sorry no that was the slowest chalk and chain I have ever seen. I have been on multiple bucking broncos and thrown off the deck. 5 years in a helo on FFG's.

god, i hated helo ops, especially after keeping watch all night, barely any sleep and we get called up for helo ops cause some air force helo decided to fly around for too long and needed a hot juice
