    Cool! the Helicopter guys are often overshadowed by the jet guys and they are often underrated! They are a very important backbone to the military!

      The spec ops and attack guys have that fighter pilot mentality. Definitely high speed low drag types. But there's an interesting thing happening across all platforms. Everyone is getting sensors and everyone is getting weapons. Even the KC-135. The days of pilot (stick and rudder) skills being the differentiator are probably gone. The planes are easy to fly now. It's all about who's got the brain for employment. That opens up the aperture quite a bit, and that's what we're seeing across all platforms now.

      @@major__kongand that will make us a more effective fighting force. Easy to fly + easy to employ = more lethal. As long as we’re not totally dependent on technology tho, still need people that can overcome and adapt when the tech breaks.

    As a 40 year Sikorsky Crew Chief, Ward you’re mixing up the Sierras & the Romeos in the photos. The Sierra has a UH-60 based Tail Landing Gear, Single wheel under the tail pylon. The Romeo has a Bravo based Tail Landing Gear, Dual wheels under the Aft Transition. Cockpit avionics are the same as far as MFDs and radios go, the Romeo has a large load out of various sensors, from Sonobouys to Dipping Sonar to Radar to FLIRS. I originally started work at Sikosky on the YSH-60B prototype 161169, first flight December 1979. Love your channel!p

    Ward, the H-60 Seahawk is very cool! I had the opportunity to fly the Seahawk Simulator back in 1990 at Mayport Naval station. I was an aviation college major, and my professor was retired Navy Captain Terrell (call sign Possum). He got our class onto the base to tour. The squadron there was submarine hunters called the Sea Wolves. The cool part was I had flown a PA-28 Piper Warrior at night from Craig Airfield to Fernandina Airport during my private pilot training a couple of years earlier, so I knew what Mayport looked like at night. The simulator had me flying the Seahawk in from 5 miles out over the Atlantic. The simulated view looked EXACTLY like the real thing! The Seahawk was cruising at 160 knots. The PA-28 couldn't hit 160 knots even in a nosedive! Lol! I only recognized 4 gauges in the right seat flying the helicopter simulator! I was sweating the whole time because it looked so real! Long story short I rotated at 55 knots thinking PA-28 not that helicopters don't need to do that and effectively drove the tail rotor into the runway. Ooops! I enjoyed this video! Brought back great memories!

    That was really nice. Two (well three) cool guys. You do need good teams and I liked how the pilots mentioned that they have cadre of folk who do this all together.

    Ward had it right when he said Helicopter folks are primed for many different missions not just one or two. That's the fun part. . But the cool part - and the part not discussed - is that Helicopter pilots/crews are largely independent, relying on their self generated tactics, unique air skills, and deception to accomplish their missions. They don't travel in packs. MH-60R crews in particular fly long distances, away from he air wing, by themselves and provide targeting, ASW, and strike targeting and support. It's a whole new ballgame. You want to be part of a valuable, reimagined, advanced part of Naval Aviation? The Helicopter community is where it's at.

    This one made me feel a bit old; I managed depot level maintenance of the Lant Fleet Bravos at my last billet. The Hotels and Romeos were a new thing then, as the Foxtrots were beginning to be displaced. We also supported Block-1 mods to Foxtrots and Bravos to test new components for this current generation of Seahawks. Thanks for the update Ward and gents, be well and stay safe!

    This is a great video for me, as I was one of the first to be working on all the pneumatic, and hydraulic systems on the U.S. Army. I finished my active army career in 1984, working on the UH-60A Blackhawk. Loved the bird, and quite an improvement from the UH1 Huey, which served so long and gallantly in Vietnam. The Blackhawk has been a great bird, and has stood the test of time in war, and proud to have been involved with them.😊

    Mooch - Great to see you do a short piece on the S/R. I was privileged to manage the flight facility and folks who integrated the last 6 B models (which were for the Spanish Navy) and all the Romeo development birds (I retired just before full production). By integrating - we took a bare airframe from Sikorsky and put all the smart systems in it plus we tested and delivered all the glass cockpits for both the S and R. We had a great engineering team that did the system integration working with the Navy - then those of us in operations had to put it all together and make it work. The Navy flight detachment we had were as a group the finest pilots I ever worked with. I was their only complaint - I'm Army and after my active duty was on the reserve component side of the house until they threw me out after 33 years. The dining in we had got interesting - GO ARMY! Had a lot of fun with the customer. Best job and people I had the pleasure to work with in my civilian career. As others have said the mix of capabilities in S and R need more time to explain so as to understand. I should also note our facility designed and built all the computers you ever flew with in the F-14 - and many, many other aircraft as well. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks Ward for showcasing the Helo community. We are a Jack of All Trades…Swiss Army Knife of the Navy. All missions are important but the most challenging in my experience is Night CSAR on NVGs or night SEAL infil or extraction…THATS where the rubber meets the road and we get almost….almost as cool as you jet guys. It’s a GREAT Adventure either way. Great Video Nicely Done ✅

    My Dad was a past CO of VXE-6 and LOVED the Helo Team that flew along with the ski equipped C-130's. The helo Team was a big part of Antarctic operations.🐧

    Great stuff Sir. One suggestion though is to explain all the acronyms that Military folks use. Most of us understand them, but many of your subscribers and viewers are/ were not military. Another one (personal for me) would be to have some more enlisted guys and gal's on. Like the Airframes Mech you had a couple episodes ago. These 2 Commanders could have easily mentioned Crew Chief's, Rescue Swimmers, Door Gunners, and Ariel Observers, Search and Rescue, Corpsmen that are Air Crew. In other branches there are Airborne Medics, Air Force PJ's, and although they are Commissioned Officers, Flight Nurses, and Flight Surgeons. Pilots get all the glory and many times rightfully so. Its also what makes people excited about aviation. But there many Enlisted Flying jobs in fixed wing as well. Especially C-130, P-3 and P-8's. Who knows how many Enlisted flying jobs they have in the Air Force with all their different specialized aircraft? Don't forget about the maintainers too. Great channel, keep up the great work.

    I was Army (groundpounder comms guy) and got to ride pretty frequently on UH60Ls & Ms. Absolute muscle machines because they were pretty light and had power for slingloads, etc. I am sure the Navy aircraft are quite a bit heavier due to their equipment loadouts, but Igor Sikorsky's team did such a beautiful job on that family of aircraft. I never got to ride on a Navy -60, but I did get to fly on contract operated, retired SH-3s in Afghanistan. Fabulous aircraft there, if a little underpowered for hot & high in Afghanistan. Navy helos are awesome, they have broad missions and get to fly to and from all sorts of ships. As an outsider, I think it's probably the closest relationship with the "black shoe" that a "brown shoe" Navy aircrew can get, since they operate pretty closely with all the ships of the surface fleet. In my mind, that's a pretty cool benefit to going helo for Navy air. The ride on those helos (with heavy "wing loading") is also the most comfortable in rough weather; I got bounced around a lot in Afghanistan on fixed wing, but helos were always really smooth.

    Video Idea: What would it have been like if the Navy had chosen the F-111B instead of the F-14? How much would be lost? Anything gained?

    Since even I see that the Helo Naval Aviators have personal call signs it causes me to wonder when call signs became a thing?
    In the two Fleet squadrons I served with in the mid 1970s to early 80s, RVAH-12 and VA-15, I can only think of a handful of officers that were known by call signs (nicknames). Of the four COs I served under in RVAH-12 (three Aviators and one NFO), of which all 3 had been Fighter Pilots with combat tours in Vietnam and the NFO had flown combat tours as a RAN in the Vigilante, only one, the late Cdr David "Barrel" McRae, USN Retired had the commonly known "nickname" of "Barrel". The only Naval Aviator I served with in VA-15 that has/had a Call Sign that I've ever heard is Vice Adm Ted "Twig" Branch, USN Retired, and I don't recall anyone referring to him as that when he was with VA-15 while I was there.
    So did the original Top Gun Movie start the move to personal call signs, or did it reflect a trend that was already happening at the time in Naval Aviation?

      In the mid 90s, I was flying in an HSL squadron and we didn't really use call signs. Many of us had them, but we still generally just called people by their first names. When I was flying C-9s in the early 2000s, it was a mixed bag. Some people (mostly former TACAIR) went by their callsigns and others just went by their actual names.

    The R & S H60's replaced more than just legacy H-60 platforms (CV-SAR and LAMPS); they replaced the HH-46D as well (the expeditionary mission now, was what squadrons like HC-6 did back prior to the introduction of the R & S plus other ideas the 46 could never safely do)...

    Any one that has sat in a old Cobra and felt the power will tell you that jets do not over shadow Helicopters. The jobs are just different. Still remember getting to sit in one as a boy at Ft. Rucker Alabama I was hooked. I got out and found the first officer with Wings on his chest and asked what I needed to do to fly one of Cobras , he looked at me and said that as it stands I cannot fly because of my eyes were not 20/20. Talk about high to low.

    It must be hard to be the CO of an expeditionary squadron with your birds spread across half a dozen ships.

      In the old HSL squadrons (SH-2F and SH-60B), the CO was pretty much always at "home guard", with the crews and aircraft that were training and getting ready to deploy or between deployment cycles. The CO & XO didn't deploy at all. Detachments (typically two helos, 6 pilots, 3 aircrewmen, and a dozen maintainers) were attached to deploying frigates, destroyers, & cruisers. The Dets were lead by an O-4 Officer-in-Charge (the senior pilot) and operationally commanded by ship's CO. The squadron didn't really exercise any control of them while they were deployed. Not very exciting for the CO, who might be stuck at home with virtually all their aircraft deployed.

    I came out of the LAMPS I with the SH-2F (HSL-33, 35, & 37). Then there was the LAMPS III with the SH-60B all operating off small boys (FF's and DD's). Now that there's the MH-60R's on the small boys, is it still called LAMPS?

    I worked on those helos many moons ago at HS-1 and HS-12, I got to be assigned to a PHASE team and really learned a lot about all the different equipment on it, went TAD to AUTEC more than a few times, that was the most boring place on the planet even if it was in the Bahamas. There was nothing to do there really.

    Ward you need a specific helo episode. All helos are not the same and you didnt have Romeo community representation. Your experience when you were axrive duty is only with the HS community on CVN. You put an army helo guy for an entire episode--need a navy heko episode!

    I wondered why you call the UH-60 an: "H-60." Still sounds like a UTILITY aircraft to me. It does whatever you need it to do. Believe it or not, the UH-60 is obsolete and the Army is spending a lot of money to develop a replacement.

      I think "H-60" often gets used as a catch all. MH-60R, SH-60B, HH-60H, UH-60L, MH-60G are all an "H-60", even though they can have substantially different primary missions, systems, sensors, weapons, and even some differences in their airframes. For me, "Utility" brings to mind hauling people and cargo, either internally or externally, or some other combat support role, but not a direct combat role like firing a missile or dropping a torpedo. Again, just my interpretation! I think the MH (Multi-mission Helicopter) designation is a good description for the Navy's current MH-60R and MH-60S.

      I'm a former 60 driver from the army, I had a chance to fly c12s and turned them down. I like flying low in the trees with the troops.

      In over 20 years, I never ran into a "washed out" jet pilot who became a helo pilot. I met one who was a Surface Warfare Officer on a FFG. Not everyone wants to fly jets. At the end of my first tour flying the SH-60B, the detailer (controls job assignments) offered me orders to fly the EA-6B Prowler. I said no thanks. (No offence meant to Prowler aviators!)
