This one's a bit frantic, and you can hear a note of stress in my voice while I try to talk quickly and get everything in one reasonably short take. I turn, and catalogue the various peoples who have ruled Malta. It is not completely complete, but for six minutes, I don't think it's a terrible summary.
More videos from Malta to follow.

A Maltese looks at a spinning British tourist
"I see now why we became a republic"
Republicans please leave
I, as a Brit, still feel affiliated to Malta due to our history together, I'm glad Malta has become such a successful little microstate, I hope the Maltese people still feel sort of the same towards the Brits!
That’s fine but if you go to Pieta cemetery, you will see the grave if Randolph Lawrence Dutton who was killed in July nineteen forty two defending Malta.
He and a colleague went out onto the airfield they were defending to make safe a time delay bomb. The bomb exploded and killed Rl Dutton immediately, his comrade died three days later of his wounds.
R L Dutton was twenty years of age.
You should be grateful lads like my uncle were prepared to defend your island.
@@eskimoglenn "You should be grateful lads like my uncle were prepared to defend your island."
Wot.
Dude, you're joking right? You dragged us into WW2 in the first place! We had a total of _3_ planes when the good ol' British Empire went to war against the Axis powers. We wouldn't have been planning on doing any military shit against them, we would've tried to be Switzerland and stayed out of it.
Instead, we were _the most bombed country in world war two_ despite being an archipelago with an area of _50 squared kilometers_ and were almost _starved into submission!_ We fucking celebrate the day that a half sunken ship managed to enter our ports as a national holiday because of it! And, despite the fact that we were instrumental in disrupting the Axis operations in Africa, we rarely see any recognition for it. Do you have any idea how much more difficult the war would've been for your country, had Malta not been there? It was quite literally referred to as the "Nurse of the Mediterranean".
Not to mention, we'd been heavily protesting your occupation for a while. All the way back in the '20s, we were trying to separate ourselves from the Empire because your laws made it so that we couldn't afford fucking bread! It was basically a fucking pre-French-Revolution situation, to the point we made a holiday out of the day we tried to revolt.
Nothing against your uncle, in fact, from what you're telling me, I too believe he was a war hero and deserves to be recognized, and I've nothing against the British (my grandpa was British, in fact, so if the situation weren't what it was I wouldn't even be here today). But if you expect us to be grateful for _basic decency,_ in that you don't leave a territory undefended, after royally fucking us over for decades, you've got another thing coming. We demanded independence for a reason.

So true! Spot on.
I like that you choose your vacation cities based on their color.
Davinel Linvega well his name is lindybiege and the color is beige
i just love the image of lindy just spinning around and talking to a camera in public for 5 minutes straight
***** It was an added incentive to get it in one take.
Lindybeige One might call it a spinning platform?
***** i wasnt referring to the way he shot the video... i was referring to how odd this must have looked to bystanders...
***** "Oh great, another tourist... This one clearly needs medication..."
My grandfather was born in Malta in 1906 and immigrated to the United States (alone!) at the age of 16. By the time of his death at age 86, he had completely forgotten how to speak Maltese, yet his accent was still so strong that you could barely understand his English! We called him "The Man Without a Language." He was a terrifically funny and caring man, but once he got excited about something, or got laughing, you just had to laugh along and try to piece together just what the heck he was on about :)
Is anybody else impressed at how lindy can just stand and spin around in the middle of a tourist spot while talking to a camera on his own? I don't think I could do it with all those people around.
I live in one of the balconies behind him haha
+Daniel Brown thats crazy
But which is crazier? Him living on the balcony behind him, or the fact that he lives on a balcony?
how much is a house cost there??
More than two mules and a pack of cats.
High, he could only afford the balcony ;-)
More seriously, Mr. Brown, you live in a very nive place- though I prefer the cold north.
I see the Napoleon hate is still strong with the british.
Mattheaus The Apostate Not just the British. He was the Hitler of his day.
Lindybeige Really?
projectilequestion Yes, really. The number of parallels is remarkable.
Lindybeige I think this is a very exaggerated statement. As a conqueror, yes, but Hitler caused many things to happen that make being compared to him a form of insult, a pretty nasty one.
Lindybeige Parallels don't make an equal... And In sincerely find it hard to find parallels to Hitler's more... well evil and globally relevant traits like, you know, eradicating people...
It was quite well done actually, although I got a bit dizzy.
My head really hurts.
@@blasterofmuppets4754 The main problem I think is that the spinning makes the overlayed writing is hard to read
When I was a kid I did a terrible thing in Malta. I stole a tile from the Roman baths. When I got home my Dad found out and I was in deep shit. My Dad sent it back to some official he got in touch with and he said it was ok, but they were glad they could replace it. I'm very sorry Malta, I suffered for my actions. 😮
i did the same thing >.
SHAME ON YOUUUU
nice thanks for the idea :)
@@PaulVRo don't do it
@@AlexMoreno-zj7po Kids do these things. In Pompeii on a school trip I managed to get a small part (5cmx5cm) of a large floor mozaic, carefully laid out the small parts in a tight snug box so everything would stay intact and in order. My friends thought this was a terrible thing to do so secretly they took it out of my bag that night and put it back.... by emptying the box upside down over the old mozaic, scattering all the parts...
The UK can never be invaded by land, because we could just leave our plugs outside pointing upwards. Absolutely lethal if stepped on.
That's why the last invasion of mainland Britain was during the Napoleonic wars no electricity so no secret weapon
What if the invaders use cats?
Hey Lindybeige I live in France and in my high school for my English test, I had to write down an oral comprehension out of this video. Obviously I succeeded. Anyway I hope you’re glad to know that you unintentionally served the French education.
Fortresses on all sides. Tight entrance to the bay. Steep and tall mountains all around for cannonading the living hell out of any attacker. That has got to be the most impressive military port I have ever seen.
Mario Rossi Yeah, especially when planes, bombs and guns weren't around.
O.o
The question is off course, *how well could the place produce food etc. on it's own?*
Mighty walls and big hordes do no good when there's no food. :D
RuSosan fishing?
Styrkr
Oh boy, am I glad that I'm not feeling REALLY stupid at all now... Not at all, nooooo...
Egh.
>.
RuSosan Alright so I'm Maltese so I can promise you one thing,
We cannot produce anything in large quantities on our own.
Back when we had a low population we could sustain ourselves from locally grown foods and goods, but after the Knights of St. John with the population boom and all, we ended up having to import a lot of things. In Malta we have very few natural resources besides the sun. :P
RuSosan You, my friend, need to play more Civilization.
"Napoleon.
Emperor.
And git."
LOL
Wait, where did that come from? Did Lindy say it? Cuz I can't find it. Or is it a Monty Python thing?

I just have to point out that intra-European hate is more of a novelty now, like old friends at a bar shit talking each other because they used to be in rival gangs as kids. It's cute really.
MIchael O It is in Western Europe, and Western Europe is all that counts.
wakaka2waka why is that the case?
+skykid That's funny. See, in America, we shit talk, too, but ours never really advances to the point of genocide. Or are the Balkans not European?
+Matthew Marceau We had the Civil War, so we aren't completely free of killing each other in droves.
deezynar Sure, but we had a reason beyond "the language you speak is slightly different than the language I speak."
If Americans thought that was a legitimate excuse to wage war, there would be no Canada.
The British have the best electrical plugs in the word.
This is an indisputable fact.
The legacy of the Empire remains in the widespread use of the English Language, Common Law etc. etc.
But it will always be our greatest failure that we never managed to impose our plug standards on the globe.
Also Left-handed driving.
Floobs The only big flaw in your plugs is the integrated fuse. If a device needs a fuse, it ought to have a fuse in the device!
Floobs I manipulate the steering wheel left handed only most of the time, does this count for something?
Floobs Plugs came into fashion after empire-building went out of fashion.
It is a shame though.
Conundrum why's that a flaw? i mean, where's it going to be getting power from other than its plug?
spamhonx56 You can't replace the fuse in the plug except by replacing the entire plug (and eventually the entire cable), while if there's a fuse in the device, you just exchange the fuse in the device.
How dare he insult the SCHUTZKONTAKTSTECKER! :P

@The Lost Eagle, Oh... didn´t expect I have to explain... My statement was meant to provoke! Provoke without insulting Lloyd, cause I like his videos! But I find this kind of constantly overpraising of everything British sometimes a little bit tiring. Yes! Inhabitants of the British-Isles have done some amazing things over the centuries and there is nothing to be ashamed of, but so did other human beings in other parts of the world (outside Great-Britain) too!
@The Lost Eagle, Now I´ve got it, too!!! :-) :-) :-)
WOOOO welcome to Malta! Thanks for the history lesson lad. YOU HAVE A MALTESE VIEWER :D
This video caught me hella by surprise, to say the least. No one ever talks about Malta. I'dve loved to have had a beer with you or something. So much D&D talk to be had!
Although I disagree with what you said re: the Maltese language; while its roots are indeed influenced by the Arabic language, it's more of a cluster f*** of many European languages (Anglo-Saxon is the term I believe) along side the Arabic language. This is directly resultant of the many rulers we've had throughout history. The language sorta developed over time.
Also; Valletta is named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette who led the knights to victory against the Turks during the Great Siege of 1565.
Point is, not all the names are of Arabic descent.
As for WW2, I remember my grand-dad lamenting about how often there'd be bombing raids - we really did have it rough during WW2, AND YET NO ONE EVER MENTIONS US.
With all that said, my Maltese history is tragically rusty, so that's as far as I can go... so happy that you came to Malta though! Made my day :)
Anglo-Saxon is English specifically.
No one ever talks about Malta?? We love you guys here in the UK. Easily the most interesting history and culture in Europe. We also love how you mutually hate Germans.
PS Anyone with their head screwed on over here knows how important Malta was during the war. Your entire nation earned a bloomin Vic Cross. Brave as hell.
Damn, I'm craving pastizzi now.
arabic base, european influence later on around 1600s look at il kantilena very pure maltese
I visited Malta 5 years ago to attend one of the English summer schools. During one of the evening walks around the city centre I noticed a girl from our group was looking in my direction. When we reached the very spot Lindy is standing, I approached the rail to enjoy the view beside her. I can remember feeling pure bliss. The view of thousands lights and sea scented breeze just strong enough to make you shiver a bit in shorts. We exchanged our names and told each other where we are from. We would hold hands the rest of the way to the bus, sat together on the drive back and kissed before going to our rooms. I left a few days after that and regretted not seeing her again. Barbara, I hope you are doing great back in Czech Republic. Thanks to you I have this lovely teenage-romance story to tell.

Greyghostvol1 Ha beat me too it.

It makes no sense to have a different plug, I just wonder why your adapter for a British plug , has a British plug on it ?
William Stanway It also has two USB ports - handy for recharging the camera.
William Stanway it's a universal adapter, you flip the switches for the different standard prongs to extend, the other side has the slots for all those same standards (ie. it can plug an american device into a british outlet, and a british device into an american outlet), thus it can be sold world wide
Noah Fix One can only hope it actually transforms the voltage and frequency. I've got one of those things as well, but it's entirely passive, so if somebody from North America were to ever come here and use it, he'd be able to enjoy the lovely smell of 230V roasting his electronics...
***** It wouldn't need to be that heavy, surely... If we can have very small converters that turn 230V AC into 5V DC, surely it should also be possible to turn 230V AC into 110V AC, or vice versa, in an equally small unit, provided it can keep itself from overheating. I'd be more worried about the frequency conversion, because that seems a lot trickier.
Robert Faber those small converters operate at a high frequency and are designed for DC. Sine wave converters are hard to build. It's a lot simpler to just use a big transformer.
A small point: the Phoenicians didn't ally themselves with the Carthaginians. The Phoenicians WERE Carthaginians, or rather the Carthaginians are what we call the later more military-minded Phoenicians who were based in the city of Carthage the had founded in modern-day Tunisia. The Romans still called them Punics, and in fact the wars they had with Carthage are called the Punic wars.
I hope you got around to see some of the few Punic remains on the island; a temple to Astartes/Juno (a later name for the goddess, for sure) and several tombs around the island. The archaeological museum would also have had a few Punic ornaments.
Qart Hadasht took over Malta in the VI century BC after it became independent from Tyre.
I hope Lloyd visits Singapore one day. Like Malta, Singapore is an island nation with a colonial past. Once a British trading post and fortress. We have tropical climate and sunny weather almost year round. Most importantly we use the correct three-pin plugs and our cars are driven on the right side!
Lego has nothing on British plugs when it comes to accidental barefoot incidents.

The British plug really is an objectively superior design in every meaningful sense.

That was AMAZING. I feel like you just injected a whole syringe full of history about a place I barely knew existed directly into my brain. Great stuff!!!
I have got to say this may be one of your best videos!
As of about nine seconds in, I can in fact confirm that that is a complete 360 degree (2pi radians if you prefer) spin.
Gabriel Munn but did he quick or no scope?
Gabriel Munn I prefer one tau radian
L3monsta oh Warhammer.....how your war never ends....
The Aus/NZ plug has the advantage that when you drop it it doesn't naturally fall with the pins facing up. It's also earthed and much smaller. The earth pin is also slightly longer so it's the first to get connected. Far superior to all plugs.
James Burtton The British earth is the longest prong, and it presses a lever which then opens doors enabling the other two prongs to enter. Babies with knitting needles cannot jam the needle into the live or neutral.
Lindybeige Schuko plugs are perfectly good, or at least would be if the world would get off its behind and have the entire system be TNCS, not just the bit inside your house.
Lindybeige it would be far more effective to simply convert our babies to run on alternating current
***** although my little bro did try with wire once. luckily it was an outdoor plug at a school that only switches on with a key.
Samsung Exynos 7420 Com on! Every body knows that the german plug is the best of all. Is strong, hard to break, is grounded, but it can also be small and ungrounded for simple devices. It's also holds well to the plug, but is not holding on from the connectors, but from the plastic structure.
And the most important thing of all... you can plug it in both ways!
From a local Maltese History buff, a heartfelt thanks to you for getting our extensive history RIGHT! I have seen so many videos on youtube that get it wrong! Subscribed :)
Aww man.. being Maltese and a fan of your videos made me really happy to see this. I hope you enjoyed your stay in our lovely little island. :)
Do one about the history of the eletrical plugs!
Come to Brazil, we use *ALL* of them
Lloyd seems to have a bit of a biased opinion about Napoleon.
Walter Johnson He's british...they are biased about a lot of things.
Walter Johnson A bias brought about by having read a fair bit about him. He was a thoroughly nasty piece of work - utterly self-obsessed, willing to sacrifice vast number so people for his schemes, utterly unapologetic, and willing to lie and lie and lie to everyone around him. He caused the deaths of vast numbers of people. If he had had Hitler's access to technology, he would have killed many more.
Lindybeige Ahh the things people do in bids for world domination.
Walter Johnson and plugs!
Walter Johnson Errr, no. The man wanted to take over the world. _And make it more French._ Could there be anything more evil than that?
this was awesome, more of these please!
By far the most I've learned in six minutes in regards to history. For that, you have my thanks
What a fantastic start to a video! I vomited only once! That's less than usually with these videos, really.
The Europeans did not "pour money into it" The country had a period of free market capitalism.
Pouring money happens in a free market.
Loved this kind of video! Really interesting :)
I really enjoyed this video, more history videos pls :D
Still, Australian plugs have three pins, with the top two being angled so they have even less chance to fall out.
Yup. they are pretty good, I think. Well, i'm from NZ not OZ but the plugs are the same: three prongs, top two angled.
Fropps And it looks like a face, theres another plus. Two entire plusses.

Why do you consider brittish plugs as better? We have regular two pin european, and it never fell off

Phelim Mcevoy What have the British ever done for us? Well there's the plugs! Yeah but apart from the plugs, what have the British every done for us? Absolutely fuck all!
Phelim Mcevoy Except when you stumble home, late at night and step on one.. "EU" plugs do not land prongs up on the floor.
Best history summary video so far!
You are making me dizzy and giving me motion sickness. And I don't get motion sickness. Although, I give it to you: great history lesson, mate. Cheers!
America has indeed switched to a three-pinned plug in almost all modern applications. We only use the 2-pinned ones on extremely weak devices where getting shocked by them would only be a mild irritant.
See? www.earth911.com/content/uploads/2011/09/Plug.jpg
Conundrum Rest of the world uses three pins as well. Normally they are integrated on the side of the plug (except for the applications you mentioned). I'll file his remark under: Is brit and doesn't care about the rest of the world.
Conundrum "... would only be a mild irritant."
The top end of that (where appliances would have a three pronged, grounded plug) would still leave your finger a bit numb were you to get shocked.
Greyghostvol1 I'm not an electrician so I only had a vague idea that weaker devices still had the two-prong design. Good to know I should continue not sticking forks into my toaster. xD
Conundrum Unless you're talking about electric razor plugs in the toilet, it doesn't matter how "weak" your device is as you will get yourself to 220/230/110 V if a malfunction occurs. Now, devices that have a fully insulated casing don't need the third plug because you can't get into contact with a conductive surface.
Conundrum Yeah, you may have proper plugs these days (albeit not as good as CEE7/7, the best plug in the world), but you're still insisting on running 110V at 60Hz, thus breaking compatibility with most of the rest of the world...
They are better plugs! The + and - don't even open without the long earth. Big thick heavy contacts. Our plugs are the business!
their so much better >.< wish we had them over here.
Thanks for that. Together with the other Malta video, it felt like a nice little holiday trip while watching. Not on board with you on the plug issue, though. German Schuko plugs are even better.

Saying that Maltese was influenced by Arabic is the same as saying that Italian was influenced by Latin, or English was influenced by Old English etc. Well, duh.
It's much more logical to say that Maltese IS an Arabic variety which was heavily influenced by Italian and some other European languages.
Actually, the roots are Arabic, but teachers of the Maltese agree that after Malta lost its connection with the Arabic world, the Maltese 'Arabic' dialect evolved quite diffrerently (more so because the locals, mostly catholic, wanted to distance themselves from the Arabic word, going so far as to claim Phonecian as the roots of Maltese) Nowadays it is much more heavily influenced by English. As a Maltese speaker myself who studied the language in depth I can attest to that. Interestingly enough, one may note that different sectors of life employ a 'different' kind of Maltese which is either heavily reliant on English, or Italian. Just reading a judgment in Maltese you will notice the courts use a very 'Italianised' Maltese. The Arabic element is mostly static nowadays, but nonetheless remains the basis of the language.
I really love your videos, LindeyBeige. You are awesome.
It's always amusing to see the history of my home floating on the interwebs.
Also, very good pronounciation of Marsaxlokk!
+Heldane Urbanus Yeah I was surprised by how accurate it was myself!
he's right about the plugs
Man................ here in Malta we have to study that history but in more detail.
Great video Lindybeige, hope you enjoy your stay. Don't forget to check out the palace armoury and munch down on a ton of pastizi and imqaret. Cheers from Malta.
Big fan of this format. Would love to see a quick rundown of other volatile areas/nations and who ruled when.
While spinning!
we have three pronged plugs here in Canada, to long rectangle shaped ones and a ground that sits bellow (unless the person who installed the receptacle hated humanity and installed it upside-down, i have strong feeling about this) but the ground is not mandatory for many appliances that don't require as much power so many of the plugs do only have two prongs. However, i will concede that UK style receptacles and plugs are superior with safety features.
Kyle A I feel your pain. Lived two years in a place where the outlets were installed *horizontally* of all things...
***** my condolences
Kyle A Good ol' canada.
Kyle A Plugs installed upside down are to prevent people from electrocuting themselves if their thumb slips onto the top two pins while inserting a plug. Some places want it done that way up here. Also we have bedroom circuits being GFCI'd at the breaker itself nowadays so there's really no need for a fused switch.
+Kyle A The same plugs as in the U.S. I've lived in both places, so I know.
I found your talking about Matla's history very distracting from the spinning.
I look forward to more spinning videos.
I like my plugs thank you very much, never have any problems with them :-P Love the video! Quite the interesting area! Too bad about no archeology though - maybe another video?
I have never been more pround to like a video in my life XD
No, they are not.
1# The "euro-plug" can be inserted both ways.
2# It's outer shell is smaller, thus more compact.
3# The prongs in the "euro-plug" are round. i think i don't need to tell mr Lindybeige what is the more efficient shape and can withstand more forces: square or round.
I give two point to UK plugs, internal fuse and on/off switch in the wall socket. But i have to take two thousand points for the reason for internal fuse: there were no fuseboxes in the UK houses because everything was guarded by this new plug, sitting between the equimpent that most likely can fail and the mains.. Except that when the wires in your walls start smouldering, there is no way that the circuit can just cut those lines that are overheating. You got a house, with metal wires inside walls getting slowly hotter and hotter until they burst to flames. Now adays, afaik, UK houses have proper fuseboxes and thus, proper safety (anyone can correct me but the reason for no fuseboxes was the war effort, which is a legitimate reason). And i can probably add at least 1 million plugs to the equation where the fuse has been replaces by a nail.
Score:
UK -1 001 999
EU +3.
I would consider that as defeat for the British... Oh, just after the match was over, the referee stepped on the damn fucking british plug (his words, not mine) that inexplicaply will ALWAYS land prongs up and decided that Uk can not particiapte in the international Best Plug of the Year competition, held each year in Vanuatu.
got dizzy.........and no, they are not better plugs but I still love your work :)
+Patrick Moore I may stand corrected about this one shortly
+Patrick Moore Yes - They are better plugs in all crucial respects, namely: safety - they are fused, safety - they are earthed and safety - they don't generally come loose and allow you/children/pets to be electrocuted.
+bluebottle001 To be clear, electrification should not be possible.
The live/neutral pins are insulated quite someway from the base. By the time a pin comes in contact with the socket's contact, the uninsulated part of the pin should be completely enclosed in the plug.
This is in comparison to many designs where you could drop a coin behind a loose plug and short the two pins.
Also you can plug in even quite heavy wall warts and the plug will hold like a champ because it's so strong.
same here. The prongs are insulated and disappear from view before they make contact. Earthed here to. I can stick a screwdriver into my sockets and the house fuses blow before I get a jolt.
Leafy Is Queer does that mean you have never traveled?
Sorry, I might sound like a broken record.. but thanks for sharing this. I really liked it cause you go to places I sometimes read about and it is cool to see how it looks, and what it meant. Thanks for sharing.

But what about the... Maltese Falcon?
diamened YES!! how the bloody hell can you talk about Malta with out mentioning the Maltese Falcon ?!?!?!?!?!?!
diamened I saw that stupid bird. Overrated.
diamened What the heck is the Maltese Falcon? Is it the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs?
STOP SPINNING!!
I feel sick
hey lindy, always love your videos and really enjoy watching your channel grow. One thing I personally would like to see is architecture on castles and medieval structures in general, and even older. I personally would love to learn your perspective on how these structures were built etc as it would greatly help me in what I do. Most likely you'll never see this comment, but if you do, architecture and styles of architecture. Thank-you for your consideration.
Consistently humorous and informative.👍

I knew the Knights of St. John part from Age of Empires. I'm ashamed.
Killjoy How? I read over the history section over and over and I didn't see anything. I'm not doubting you but where can I find this?
ClockworkPlagueDoctor It's AoE3 he's talking about, most likely. I don't think you'll find anything on the Knights of St. John in AoE1 or AoE2.
Robert Faber Ah ok, I haven't played the third one in a long time. I'll look for that now. Thank you.
ClockworkPlagueDoctor The campaign of AoE3 starts with you defending Malta from the Ottoman Turks.
Oh, I never played the campaign. I just kinda did custom battles lol
Helpful background on my holiday destination that funnily did not leave my head spinning!
You use the wrong plugs and drive on the wrong side of the road but I still love you dudes.
Wait did you say Finnish glory to Finland
No, he said "Phoenici-"
British plug is crap, It's awkwardly big.
And nobody use them, only the British. It's like everything else.
Bigger=Better
The irony is that when he boasts about how safe they are through being earthed, he shows a plug which is in which the metal earth pin is replaced by a plastic one...
The Earth pin when plastic still acts as a safety future as when if that top one is not pressed in the socket does not issue any electricity meaning if you stick a piece of metal in one of the bottom 2 or the tope one no electricity is discharged. British engineering is superior
Harry Sinclair how many British have been to the moon?
At like the four minute mark I started wondering why I was getting a headache, then realized that you were spinning. Great video though!
Another video about Malta from Lindybeige? Let me get the checklist
-Spinning around [✔]
-A remark about the 3 pin sockets [✔]
Seems about right
Aerunn Allado you forgot the Beige.
Love you Beige but seriously, anything electrical and British is almost by definition not better :P
I was just poking some fun, but the EU plug is quite straight forward and easy.
Although it is sometimes hard to unplug.
Don't tell anyone about this, but I hate the EU too (and I'm Dutch).
I personally love Napoleon. He's just dandy and the Brits have never had a leader of his caliber.
+MrJethroha What he did in Malta was the act of a lier, coward and thief so... no he was a piece of shit
I could listen to lindybeige talk about history until he himself becomes a historical figure. Keep it up!
Best channel ever. Change my mind
You got it wrong about the plugs. Swedish plugs are, naturally, superior.
Boy still thinks Normans weren't French lol. Cracks me up every time how the Brits just won't accept the fact that William the *conqueror* was a Frenchman. Also, all that Napoleon hate hehehe. Just admit it Lindy, you're jelly.
Ray Evans
Well, at that time they haven't been in north-west France so long that they can be considered "Frenchmen", I guess.
By the time they invaded England in 1066, they'd been in France for over 150 years, for Malta around 200 years. And they bred a lot with the French during that time., they adopted the French culture too, as can be seen by the francization of their names in historical documents.
Ray Evans
Fair enough.
But sometimes even with many centuries people still don't see themselves as natives, like the Crusaders in the Holy Land for example.
+Ray Evans Normans were ethnically nordic. The word "Norman" comes from "Northmen"..
blazednlovinit lol.. Not in the times of WIlliam the bastard. The northmen established themselves in Rouen at the end of the 9th century, William was born in the second quarter of the 11th century. His mother was French, his father was like 3/4 French. And the same was true of pretty much every descendants of the Viking settlers living in Normandy at that time. They had been completely absorbed into the French culture and ethnicity. This myth of William being a "Northman" was made up by Brits who don't want to admit that they were conquered by a French lord and that their court spoke French. Because of the animosity between the two cultures, and especially because of the incessant French bashing that has been going on since the 20th century.
Brilliant video 👍👍
I never knew Malta had such a colorful history, though it seems rather beige today.
Excellent video, and ideas for more videos like this? (as in, histories of areas that may not get as much coverage as most, whether or not you can actually make a journey there)
